Hello? Can you hear me? ...Perhaps if I shout? AAAAAAAAAH!

That's assuming if nothing happens along the way.

*Riela radios in*

Status report! A village up ahead is being attacked by Imperial forces!
It seems a bunch of villagers that were evacuating are engaging them!

*Meanwhile, at the village*

We don't have a choice, do we?! The Imperial aren't going to show mercy even to civilians! *Shot* Ah!
Hey, pull yourself together! Damnit, at this rate....!

*Back at the Nameless camp*

Kurt, what'll we do?
This escort's safety has top priority. We can't--
Captain, is there something the matter?
Reports are saying there's a village on our way being attacked by Imperials.
What?! Is it possible to save them?
If it's something His Eminence wishes...
We can't abandon them. That is my request.
Yes, sir!

So our mission here is to join up with Zeri and occupy two base camps.

Both tanks and turrets litter the place, but there's also our first tier 3 unit already in the Lancer Elite. Not too much of a big deal since tiers have been reduced in power, and Lancers are the least problematic.

Composed: Increase accuracy under interception fire.
Competitive: Increase accuracy when enemies outnumber allies in area.
Darcen Pride: Increase defense and anti-vehicle when near Darcsens.
Quibbler: Decrease defense.

Goddamn, Zeri would be one of our top troops as a kid with his sky-high accuracy on top of his Potentials. A nice little thing is that guest troops are equipped with the latest standard weapon tier you have.

Wait...isn't that...
We are a special ops of Gallia. We're here on orders to destroy the Imperial army. Please step aside, I don't want to cause trouble for the Town Watch.
*Think* It's him again....
We're going to save you now. Don't die on me!
Y-Yes, sir!

So it's Arlem. Again. I promise, we'll get out of this loving map rotation later in the game but loving christ. Here's Gloria combined with the ace Lancaar to effectively be a sniper.

Hold on!
Wait, that's....

Everyone, change of objective! Our new target is to eliminate the enemy commander! If he falls, the chain of command will fall to pieces. Move out!
Amazing. That decision was made without a second thought. I...I have to keep up!

So a little switch-a-roo, our objective changed from taking two camps to killing a tank.

And honestly, killing a tank is much easier.

I think it was 5 turns to S rank, but at this point, I can individually map each pixel of Arlem.

I haven't been showing it, but Clarissa has actually been killing well since her Engineer ace weapon is much better to kill with than any scout. She's basically a slightly worse Shocktrooper without grenades.

During this break, I'll show off Kurt's current batch of Orders. As I mentioned before, they de-nerfed Order costs so they don't average like 6 CP to use. Currently we have:
Request Heal (1): Small heal on unit.
Resupply (2): Fully refill one unit's ammo.
Aim Boost (1): Raise one unit's accuracy.
Attack Boost (1): Raise one unit's anti-infantry.
Antidote (1): Remove status ailment.
Medic Request (2): Evacuate one fallen ally.

Keep in mind Aim Boost cost 4!!! in VC2, and even Antidote cost 2.

Everyone! It was Lord Borgia that told us to save everyone!

*Village cheers*

Oh, Borgia! Your Eminence!
Thank you very much!
I am just glad you are all safe. May all of Gallia's people receive Valkyria's Salvation.
May Lord Borgia receive Valkyria's Salvation!

*Meanwhile at a distance*

Quite a charaismatic man....
When I saw your uniform, I had a feeling it was you!
Oh, you're the young man from before.
My name is Zeri. What's yours?
...It's Kurt.
You saved me again. I can't imagine how to repay you.
Don't be. We saved you under orders. I personally thought abandoning you was the smarter plan.
Even so, you did risk your lives regardless.

That's a good idea. His Eminence and everyone else should be able to rest easily here.
A Darcsen...could this person be...?
Yes. This is my benefactor, Gusurg.
Benefactor? I should be saying the same to you.
Eh?

Thanks to this...Gallian?
I know that look. I'm not lying, you know.
Someday, you might meet a person that changes you as well. There's just no telling whether that person will be Darcsen or not.
Gusurg....
You should head back now. The less you know of us, the better you'll be off. Good-bye, then. *leaves*

Zeri pinpoints this exact date and time he was cursed with Avan.

*Later that night*

Mmhmm....*Grinds out powder*
Hmm....This is wrong. The spice is all wrong. *Grinds again*
No. Too bitter. Less of that next time.
Um, Kurt? What are you doing?
I'm using wild herbs that grow around here as spice.

Wow! I didn't expect that from you.
Truth be told, I'm not really making food. I just add herbs and spices to food.
You said earlier that it tasted too bitter?
Right. Since cooking isn't an exact science, I'm always experimenting with it.
For example, the food that people tend to favor in the winter are completely different than the summer.
Eh?! I never thought about it like that.
Even further, tastes seems to change depending on what season it is.
Um, er....I think so? Maybe? *think* What should I say? I don't understand at all).

*Kurt continues grinding as he talks*

Many things can make the taste of spice more complex.

All that from just this powder?
If used correctly, it can even make army rations taste delicious.
It's a useful hobby, don't you think?
You sold me on the army rations, alone.
*think* But...how long is going to work on that?

*The next morning*

Wha?! It's already morning?!
*Continues grinding* Good morning, Riela.
Huh?! You're still working on that?
Hmm, I guess I lost track of time.
Wow...wait, did I spend the entire night in your room?
You were sleeping pretty soundly so I didn't wake you.
Th...this is very bad!!
I didn't do anything, if that's what you're thinking.
That's true, but everyone else isn't going to think so!

*Riela runs off*

*Later that day*

So...I heard the captain spent the night with Riela last night.
Looks like we'll need a thorough investigation to get to the bottom of this.
Hmph. Figures.
I was just making spices.
......
...No good.

*Background of meat sizzling*

That's fine with me.
Hm? Starting what?
It looks like a cooking contest.
Come again?
Apparently, they found some ingredients the Imperials left behind.
It's a present to us from the enemy. "From Maximilian, with love", eh?
This is a good chance for us to get a break from army rations.
Is Imperial food even an upgrade, though?

If this Imperial cuisine lacks the taste of the Empire, I can't serve it!
No, we should factor for season and climate. Even the taste of the water is different here.
It's getting interesting! It's a duel between Traditional Chef Giulio and the Experimenter Kurt!
Hmm. So how long have they've been at it?
I think they've been preparing for half a day, so in about...two hours?

Cardinal Borgian already has his meal made, so it's fine.
This striped pig has a delicate flavor. If you marinate it properly, it becomes dramatically more delicious.
We'll get to taste taste of the Imperials that's been protected for hundreds of years!
Whether Imperial tradition is untouchable or an obstacle to progress, I'll decide.
If it has light flavor, then a Bouquet Garni made of fresh herbs is the optimal choice! It will defeat the Imperial traditions!

I'd like to try the Imperial dish, but the captain's looks good as well.
It's fine to just eat them both, right? I'm looking forward to it!
Pig is delicious even when you just grill it....
I just want to eat at this point. I'm starving to death over here...

*Hours later*

It's too good! You guys are both awesome!
They're both so tasty. How are we going to decide a winner?
It'll be a challenge, but make sure it's the right choice!
Giulio's right. If there's no clear victor, there's no meaning to the contest.
Fine, I'll decide! Whoever gets me more food, wins!
No!
We're letting quality decide it, not quantity.
Well sorry, but I can't decide otherwise.
Me neither!
At this point, it'd come down to personal tastes.
Grilled is the best....
Well just finish up, and tell us who's the winner afterwards!

*Time passes*

Still no winner....
Huh? Looks like someone hasn't voted yet.
It's Gusurg! He's still eating!
Hmm? What's up?
Gusurg! Tell us who made the better food!
And please be honest about...it? What is that?
Gusurg, what's that deep red liquid?
That's right! We didn't add any sauce.

I love hot stuff, so I always add this to my meat. Do you guys want some?
Gusurg!!!
How dare you disgrace the art of cooking! I should bring you to court to be fined!
What'd I do? It seems like you guys are hotter than my food.

Well they're still hung up on food but at least this is more about the presentation and preparation of it than constantly wanting to consume it.
I like the competition and how it's framed (especially since Giulio's fragment has been done.)

Riela nodding off and that situation is rather trope-worthy though. Spice-chat was neat at least.

That was too easy. Is the Imperial Army is full of useless men after all?
That's what we hope, anyway.
We haven't completed our mission just yet. Don't let your guard down.
Imca, please take point along our route. Keep an eye on our flank.
Not a problem.

*Gunfire heard at a distance*

An enemy unit is approaching from the forest! We're under attack!
An ambush? Here?!
We gotta act fast!
Everyone, prepare to engage!
Kurt, look! That emblem! It's the same as that Darcsen squadron as before!
Those guys again....I knew things felt too easy.
*Think* Was our route leaked to the Imperials? In any case, under these circumstances, there's no place to run....!

*Meanwhile at Calamity Raven*

It looks like the enemy's at a severe disadvantage.
Of course they are.
That handicap was placed on them from the beginning.

*Back to the Nameless*

Form a defensive line! Protect the Cardinal to the death!

Oookay...it seems like a meeting with the Ravens increases the difficulty spike for whatever reason. It's not because we were ambushed, but their troops are just flat-out stronger by a large margin than any Imperial force.

This map is a decoy. Just place a couple Shocktroopers to protect it against Scouts while you move on with the other deployment spot.

Here, the APC is stranded with a tank and Lancer staring right at it. For the deployment spots here, have at least one Lancer and use Kurt's Direct Command to get closer to wipe out the initial wave.

It takes a long rear end time even with the ace Lancaar, as I can only get side shots off.

Clearing and capturing the nearest camp gets access to this map. The objective here is to get a Scout to hop across the camps and reach the north via the pier. The bridge on the right is death with two tanks covering the way.

Imca clears out the place so Gusurg has an empty bridge to cross to the final map.

The enemy ace is called Kuma the Zombie. As in the...undead bear? Whatever he is, he can take 2 shots to the head which is hosed up.

Look! The objective is right there! Smooth sailing, even though I don't understand how being on top of a hill is beneficial. A last stand thingie or something?

OH WAIT NO, gently caress YOU

Meet the strongest enemies in the game, possibly in the franchise outside of boss units. These assholes have high defense, a goddamn shield that negates all damage, and a chain machine gun that rips through HP like nothing.

That HP? That was from like 1 second of interception fire. The only, ONLY advantage you possibly have is that you can still aim-stop them to get close, but unlike V2's they can still put up a bullshit shield to counterkill you.

RIP Serge.

GO CLARISSA

YEAAAAAAAAAAAH

4 Turns, gently caress that.

Serge is our first Elite, which is eh but Alfons will go far with his upgraded stats. ZMKar is similar to the first ace Scout rifle, just without the defense reducer.

Oh right, that small detail.

We can't hold out any more! If you've got any ideas, now's the time!
Captain, I need to speak to you.
Cardinal Borgia!? It's too dangerous out here!
I realize that. That is why I’ll go over to the enemy side as an emissary and attempt to negotiate a truce.
Absolutely not! Our mission was to protect you from the Imperial Army!
Dying here now has no meaning.

Cardinal....I understand.
All units, hold your fire! Raise the white flag!

*At a distance*

Captain Dahau! The enemy has raised a white flag!
Hm...Hold your fire! Let's see what they do.

*Time passed*

It looks like they've accepted our surrender.
Kurt, I've received their conditions for negotiations: "Including the captain, send four to negotiate. If there are any Darcsens with you, prioritize them."
Darcsens?
I wonder that myself. Is it only because they're a Darcsens squad? Let me join the party.
All right. I'll bring Imca along as well, which fills out the conditions.

*A moment later*

I am honored to be in your presence, Your Eminence Cardinal Borgia.
There's no need to stand on ceremony. We're the ones who want to negotiate.
Now then, I would like those who accompany him to introduce themselves.
Escort Unit Commander, 7.
I wanted to hear your name. If you refuse to answer, shall we consider our negotiations terminated?
.........422nd Unit Commander, 2nd Lieutenant Kurt Irving.
422nd Master Sergeant, Gusurg.
...Imca.

If you agree to hand over Cardinal Borgia to us, I will guarantee 2nd Lieutenant Irving's squad's safe retreat.
I trust there's no problem with this arrangement?
What do you intend to do with the Cardinal?
I am a Darcsen. By nature, I do not enjoy conflict. I intend to manage the Cardinal's safe passage.
However, I also have a responsibility to hand the Cardinal over to His Highness, Maximilian.
I can promise you that the Cardinal will be well treated on his journey there, but I am not in a position to have any say on how he will be sentenced. I hope you understand that much.
The terms are acceptable.
I have no words to excuse myself, Your Eminence. I apologize for failing my mission.

To ensure that your efforts do not go to waste, I will try to enter a dialogue with His Majesty.
2nd Lieutenant Kurt. The next time we meet, I would like to face you under more fair conditions.
Even in chess, there's such a thing as initiative and flanking. There's no such a thing as "even ground".
Heh...you're not mistaken. In that case, under more "balanced" conditions, then.

To show that we exist.
Eh?
Gusurg, do you possess confidence and pride in yourself as a Darcsen?
I possess that. A sense of conceit that the Darcsens are a great people.
In order to prove that, that is why I lead a unit of Darcsens and stand on the battlefield.
You are certainly the boldest Darcsen I've met.

But that only ensures we have no future. We must have a dream!
I see....
Spread the word to our comrades in Gallia. The existence of our unit, which fights with pride and ambition in our hearts.
Persecution in the Empire is supposed to be even worse than in Gallia. Even so, why?
It's because it's so severe that we understand. The fact that a dream is what the Darcsen people need.
An interesting twist to take on your cruel reality....
You said your name is Imca, right? Is there ambition in your heart?
....I don't need such a thing. *walks away*

Gusurg, Imca...one day you'll realize.

*Calamity Raven leaves*

*Think* What's with him? Is he really a Darcsen?

*Later that night*

This is the second time I've been defeated by that man, Dahau. His leadership skills clearly surpasses mine.
What am I lacking? Comparing myself to him......what could it be? If I don't find it......!
I must...No. I WILL surpass him!

This incident was treated as top secret information by Major General Isler and the few others who were aware of it.

Losing the means for a peaceful settlement, the Gallian High Command took advantage of this and used it to break the complicated stalemate.

Welp, mission not accomplished.

Your way of thinking is fair. We have not seen anything that you could be considered undeniable proof. It's just that what's important isn't whether the Valkyria truly exist.
More than that, it is far more precious for people to believe that salvation is possible. That a faithful heart that can heal a wounded soul and show that person the right path.

Guy doesn't even believe his own religion, he thinks it's just a good way to make people happy, he doesn't care whether it's false hope or not. He's preaching stuff that he literally doesn't care whether it's true or not, and Darcsen are suffering for it, since Yggdism casts them in the Satan role. If a religion (or any set of propositions) is true, it should be believed no matter its effects on a population. If a religion is false, it should be disbelieved no matter its effects on a population. He's just a manipulator. That's... Not what he's saying. He's saying 'regardless if you believe it or not, it's important for people to believe that salvation is possible.' He didn't say anything about his own beliefs.
He's essentially attempting to persuade Kurt to buy into it's importance via a common link they share: they are leaders and they do things for others (Kurt for the Squad, Borgia for his followers) since Kurt has already made his own stance clear.

...Because I fell in love with him.
He was injured, then captured, leaving me to tend to his wounds.
Slowly, we became closer. I don't know why, but there was this...connection that couldn't be explained.

But...obviously he's not with you now.
I refused, but not because I didn't love him. It was because of ethics, nationality, whatever reason my family and friends told me.
I was so convinced that it wouldn't work out because of that.....

Clarissa...
What I did was unforgivable....I lied to the person I loved the most on this world. That's why I vowed to never doubt myself again.
That's a good thing to learn for life.
At the very least, I managed to keep true to my ideals.
On the day he left, he said he'll come back one day and gave me this.

Matching necklaces?
Yes. I hope he's wearing the same to this day under the same sky....thinking of me.
I can see why you'd be afraid to tell anyone this.
Falling for the enemy, helping him escape, and then waiting foolishly for him to return.
It's a long shot, but I believe in him if you do.
Mmhm.
There! There's that smile I was talking about!

Thank you.

Well, now. I wonder what the Yggdists think of Max's attempt to turn himself into a Valkyrur.

Hello? Can you hear me? ...Perhaps if I shout? AAAAAAAAAH!

S-Sorry, Alfons! Does it hurt that bad?
Do not worry, for your concerned expression is like painkiller for me.
Hey, how about explaining getting shot on guard duty?
It's going to happen occasionally, since our squad's always on solo duty.
And because of that, it's hard to mount any countermeasures.
Everyone is just trying to protect one another....
That's what real comrades do. There's nothing to regret.
Yeah, it's not a big deal. Don't worry about it.
Okay, I'll just have to work extra hard so you all stay healthy!
Ow ow ow too much! Too much!
Maybe don't work that hard.

We're changing plans.
Our new objective is to find their base of operations before they pinpoint our location.
Unfortunately, the enemy has already put us on the defensive. If they continue this pressure, casualties may rise.
Captain, is it possible to delay the operation for now? Many of our troops are still recovering from injury....
We can't. These orders came from the top.
But regardless, we must destroy the enemy before they reach us for our survival. We must strike with the initiative.
But-
Clarissa, this is our best chance. Don't worry, we'll all come out alive out of this.

Our situation is grim, but this plan allows us to dictate our success rate the best.
The Nameless way....
Hey, don't show that sad face.
That's right! A beautiful woman should have a beautiful smile!
I have to say, being wounded certainly has its perks now.
Everyone....

We attack at the crack of dawn.
We'll cause confusion and strike at the root of their forces. Everyone, prepare yourselves!

Clarissa will be our first class change for Master Table purposes. Double Movement is one of the easier yet most powerful Potentials, requiring tier 2 Engineer and Scout abilities learned.

The only downside is that the Engineer filled a niche of a high AP with killing power but eh. First time ever I said anything good about Engineers.

So now we have the Yuell map rotation, which means lots of rear end in a top hat bunkers with still no flamethrower.

The insane amounts of tanks, Shocktroopers, bunkers, etc. forced me to use the tank for the first time, mostly because the frontline firepower is good enough to kill Medium tanks at 2 shots.

The map is avoiding the stationary enemies enough to occupy 3 bases.

Um...okay?

3 Turns is incredibly strict and really hard to do with an APC, just because tanks cover 2 of the bases without any sneak attack potential.

But the true battle begins now for a medic.
Having only injuries and bullet wounds to worry about is the best scenario to have.
Clarissa! There's someone wounded here!
I'm on my way!
He's over at those bushes. I'll wait right here.
Hmm? Why?
Just go. You'll know when you get there.

*Clarissa walks over to the bushes*

An Imperial?
Is...Is that you, Clarissa?
That necklace...can it be?
Yes, it's me!
I thought you returned to the Empire.
I couldn't do it. Returning would mean I could possibly fight you, and I wouldn't be able to live with myself.
Please be quiet now. I'm beginning treatment.

Do not move so much. Good, the wound isn't deep.
...Thank you. Clarissa, let's run away!
The wound will reopen if you keep moving.
It was fate that let us meet again on the battlefield. The two of us should--
Please...please stop talking!
But, Clarissa! Why?
...If we run away now, we won't be happy. No matter how hard it is, it doesn't matter to me.

What would your family say? Can you really live in isolation from everyone you know?
Clarissa...
When the war is over, we'll see each other again.
And then, we can finally be together. So please...leave.

...Please have a doctor properly look after your wound when you return to your squad.
Alright.
Just...please go.
I will. But I'll also come back once this is all over.
And I'll wait as always.

*The Imperial soldier leaves*

You did good, Clarissa.
Felix...I was so close to saying yes and running away at that moment...
Choosing the harder path is the mark of a strong person. You'll be happier in the long run.
...I know.
For your future, let's hope to end this war as fast as possible.
For our future, and for all of Gallia!

Unshaken Hope: Restores HP after attacking.

Haha it's weird that they didn't give Clarissa's boyfriend a name or even really a distinct face. "Goodbye <Shocktrooper 3211>, I'll always love you!"

The enemy of my enemy is my enemy.
At least he gets a face. That's more you can say about 99.9% of the other Imperials! Including the vantage point character for Selvaria's DLC in VC1 :shepicide:

To be fair, the 3211s are a proud and respected family.

Things got awkward with the parents when Shocktrooper wanted to be a scout, though.

We'll start,
like many good things,
with a bear.

I dunno, if you want to be really charitable to the game, you could say they use a normal Imperial soldier to point out that even these faceless mooks are someone's brother, father, husband, or whatever.

I don't think that's the case here, mind.

To be fair to the parents, they grew up in the VC1 ruleset.

Eh, I think that's exactly the point. Welcome to war, good luck making it out alive.
