Ever wanted to try your hand at playing Movie Studio Exec?

Come play the Hollywood Stock Exchange with SA goons. I'm opening up the league today, please post or PM me with your email if you'd like to join. I'll reset all the gains on Thursday morning to give everyone a fresh start and we can go from there. If it's popular, we'll reset every month or quarter and I'll provide some sort of prize. I'm sort of shocked that there isn't a league for SA already but search reveals nothing.

From their website:

:siren:HOLLYWOOD STOCK EXCHANGE®:siren:
Hollywood Stock Exchange® (https://www.hsx.com) is the world's leading entertainment stock market. At HSX.com, visitors buy and sell virtual shares of celebrities and movies with a currency called the Hollywood Dollar®.The Company's Virtual Specialist® technology allows an unlimited number of consumers to trade thousands of virtual entertainment securities in a fair and orderly, supply-and-demand-based market. HSX syndicates the data collected from the Exchange as market research to entertainment, consumer product and financial institutions and as original content to radio, television and print media. Founded in 1996, HSX is now a subsidiary of Cantor Fitzgerald, L.P. HSX is headquartered in Los Angeles, California.

This is your chance to own a little piece of Hollywood. The Movie Market is the part of the Hollywood Stock Exchange where you can trade movies and stars, just as you would stocks and bonds. On the Movie Market, the movies are MovieStocks®, the stars are StarBonds®, and Hollywood Dollars are your ticket to fame, fortune, and fun. You receive two million Hollywood Dollars to start out with when you join the Hollywood Stock Exchange, which you use to build up your portfolio. The Movie Market also offers market info, message boards, sweepstakes, and enough movie news to satisfy Hollywood gossipmongers everywhere.

I've been playing since 20003 and I have around 38 million in the bank but I don't day trade. Most of that is from buying movies the day they are announced at $40 and then selling the weekend before release at $200 million. they give you cool graphs and such also; here's an example of my net worth tanking 10% because Ultron opened soft:

Questions

When does a MovieStock cash out? A MovieStock delists and cashes out from the market on the first business day after its fourth weekend of wide release. If the film remains in limited release, the MovieStock cashes out similarly after 12 weekends. The MovieStock for a film that goes straight to video or television cashes out the week the film debuts in the U.S. at H$0.00.

How are stock price adjustments calculated? A MovieStock will adjust in price after its opening weekend in order to bring the expected box office gross in line with the actual box office gross. On average, a film makes 2.7 times its opening weekend box office during its first four weeks of wide release. Typically, a MovieStock is halted on its wide release date and price adjusted on the Sunday of its opening weekend.

Let's get it on! Here's the link to the league page: http://www.hsx.com/league/view.php?id=3592

I used to gently caress around with HSX a while ago. What does being in a league involve?

Jan 25, 2007

Not a lot beyond what we choose to make it, really. The site keeps league stats based on % gain and gives you a way to organize but that's about it.

Jesus, Jurassic World is up 24% in the last two weeks. I can't help but think it's less because Chris Pratt mind controlling raptors is all of a sudden something people want to see and more the relatively disappointing performances of Tomorrowland and Ultron pushing expectations up.

EDIT: I have invited everyone that has sent me an email address pretty much 30 seconds after you sent it so check spam folders plox, still only 4 people in the league which starts tomorrow morning. Thankya :tipshat:

If I'm understanding this correctly, we can start buying stocks now and any gains/losses don't count toward the league until tommorrow?

So how many stocks of a film do you usually buy? How many different films do you have in your portfolio?

I've been trying different things but so far things seem pretty arbitrary. I've looked at the long-term graphs for each movie but they just look like roller coasters and it's hard to anticipate how it will fluctuate in the near or distant future.

My best advice in the short term is just to play the weekend openers for the upcoming week: http://www.hsx.com/security/feature.php?type=opening. Pick something big like San Andreas and make a play either for or against it.

From their Strategy forum- Keep an eye on the estimates for the film's opening weekend as they are released and see if they line up with the price. Also, ask yourself - do you expect it to overperform those estimates? Underperform? Look at other disaster movies and see how they did in their opening weekends. This is really the only way to decide how to act on a security.

This is my current portfolio:

and this is my trade history for the last 30 days:

I've been playing pretty passively for the last few years but if the league becomes active I will probably take half my portfolio and day trade/play weekend openers with it.

this is about as exciting as actual stock market stuff and if you have been working on this for 12 years you could have probably made a significant amount of real money during that time.

Standings heading into week 2:

Weekend Openers are:

Entourage $45.53 (Seems high for an R -rated movie about a 5 year old show that didn't go out on a high note)
Spy $97.86 (Seems pretty grossly overvalued to me, I'm not sure how many asses Melissa McCarthy puts in seats)
Insidious Chapter 3 $58.72 (Not sure about this one since horror is almost always undervalued on the exchange. Dunno if the series has that kind of draw.)
Love & Mercy $3.17 (Never heard of it)
Wild Horses $1.16 (Never heard of it)
Testament of Youth $.54 (Never heard of it)
Hungry Hearts $.27 (Never heard of it)

Derivatives:
Entourage opening weekend $17.56
Entourage $15 Million Call/Put $4.75/$2.70

Insidious opening weekend $25.51
Insidious $20 Call/Put $4.52/$2.60

Spy opening weekend $39.38
Spy $35 Call/Put $4.40/$3.25

Frankly, everything opening this weekend seems a little bit overvalued to me as it stands right now. Make sure to get your trades in as this weekend's securities will halt tomorrow afternoon in anticipation of Thursday midnight openings.

I'm not playing this weekend's openers as I have a large part of my net worth tied up in Jurassic World and I want to see what happens with that first. I also intend to stay loooooooong on Incredibles 2 as well, so that's a big chunk of H$ I don't have for trading.

Melissa McCarthy is one of the more bankable female leads for comedies right now, honestly.

yeah it's just like, my opinion, man :)

They are marketing the poo poo out of it, anyway, so i guess i'll think of it like the Divas match in between the last few weekends' midcard and the next few weekends' main event; a nice little cooldown flick.

Looks like Insidious edged out Spy by about 100k last night. Horror is always undervalued!

That's a good point, considering how you went all in on Pixels. :coolspot:

Now you may be asking how I shot to the top so quickly, and I owe it partly to ONE WEIRD TRICK THAT VETERAN PLAYERS DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT!

I won $50,000 playing classic cash, which is essentially random, but it benefits a beginning player proportionally more than someone with an 8 figure net worth.

Other than that, I went all in (20,000 shares at $2 each) into the $100M call for Jurassic Park and I've almost doubled my investment already. I have my stocks spread out among a lot of things, but my biggest investments right now are Jurassic Park (won't stop climbing), The Good Dinosaur, and 10,000 shares in a summer movie that I think is criminally undervalued right now (hint: it's not about dinosaurs).

PS: Pitch Perfect 3 was just announced and stocks are now for sale at a fixed price of $90. http://www.hsx.com/security/view/PTCP3

I don't know, it could go the way of the Super Mario Bros movie. It just doesn't seem like the concept could be scaled up into a full length feature.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxX_bVluflo

Anyway I was wondering about those blockbuster warrants: if the film has already met it's box office goal, wouldn't investing in that warrant basically be guaranteed free money?

For example, the strike price for Fury Road is $125M http://www.hsx.com/security/view/MMAX4.BW but it's already earned $130M http://www.hsx.com/security/view/MMAX4
see alsohttp://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=furyroad.htm

Is there something I'm missing here?

The way these work is the stock price is added to the warrant's target price. So right now, you can buy the Fury Road $125M warrant for H$11.08. That means that based on current trends, the film is on track to cash out at $125M + $11.08M , or $136,080,000. In order for you to make money at this point, the film would need to finish with a box office total higher than that. The final cash-out price of the warrant will be whatever the film ends up making during a 12-week run minus $125M.

This stock is just exploding right now. http://www.hsx.com/security/view/AKIRA

I see what you mean, I already bought 20,000 shares a week ago and have made about 20% profit already, it just seems like the blockbuster warrent is unusually low-risk for a derivative since you can bail out more easily than you could with an opening weekend one.

I am sorely tempted to take my 57.7% gain on Jurassic World and run before it actually opens. The market thinks it's going to do 303 million but with Mad Max doing 300 that seems...low? Really conflicted on that one.

Nice Job, Sebadoh!
