First game I played in was 3.5, I played a halfling sorceror and was the only survivor of an encounter with a Chuul because I had expeditious retreat and left everyone for dead. First game I DMed was a game of Wraith, which was the worst run game I have ever encountered. So I tell people my first game was a 4e D&D game instead, since that was much better.
