Jesus Christ, I avoided Star Wars cos I hadn't realised the remakes were pre 2000. Jabba is even worse than I remember. He looks like something out of Doom 3.

Edit: I'm blown away by how terrible this is. There was a live actor there, so why does it still look like Han it's starring into space? Why is Han always standing so close to Jabba? Why is Han gesturing outside Jabba's field of vision. And treading on his tail? Jeeeesus.

Because it's from a cut scene when Jabba the Hutt was just a human crime lord and trafficker. Harrison Ford was talking to a much shorter actor and for some reason Lucas decided to reintroduce this in the film despite the fact that Jabba became a huge-rear end alien.

Here's the original cut draft of that scene:

I'M APPARENTLY GAY AND MY POSTING SUCKS.
Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 was released in 1997. The cutscenes had a mixture of human actors and CGI added into the mix. Some scenes did have 8t88, which I believe was partially animated. For 1997, it was kind of crappy, but I really liked the game itself.

Some mentions of Transformers: Beast Wars, the first season's 3d animation was kind of rough. Season 2 had considerable improvement. Season 3 a bit more fine tuned. I really like the show back then and bought the series just recently. I checked the internet to see what Mainframe has been up to and it's sad to see them fall so far from what they've done in the past. They got bought by another company, then they made a bunch of barbie games  Beast Wars to Barbies...

Oh yeah, I've seen the original clip. I was just astounded that the animators completely failed to use the original actor as a cue for where Han was looking, or generally interacting with Jabba.

Actually I'm more astounded that a relatively pointless scene was put back in, just for something for ILM to do.

Didn't realise they'd re-done it either. It would be fun to hold some sort of animator competition to see if anyone can actually make the scene look half decent.

I think this works because the concept was so well matched to the graphical capability of the time. If you have no control over the material's behaviour to light, and every surface looks like it's made of opaque glass, then an opaque glass character is going to look reasonably convincing.

It's also supposed to look surreal and unsettling, so being less than perfectly convincing is not really a problem.

Content: in 1996 Avalon Hill released this obscure PC game, using all of the 3D rendering abilities you would expect from a leading name in niche strategy board gaming. Sadly, I can't find any video of the opening cinematic, but the pre-rendered animations on the race selection screen at 22 seconds in are still pretty impressive for a game released several months after Quake.

My favorite part of the Mummy Returns is Imhotep running in from offscreen and dropping on one knee dramatically screaming "NOOOOOOOO!!!" in the hammiest, most over-the-top performance imaginable when the Scorpion King is stabbed. You can actually see the still of it in the preview pic of the second clip.

It's modern, but the music video for Django Django's Hail Bop uses the primitive CGI visuals as a part of its style. Really nails the half-assed psychedelia vibe that pre-2000 CGI resorted to.

"Jedi Rocks" is in my opinion the most offensive CGI atrocity in the 1997 Star Wars re-release.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jzZOgLH4KU

Everything about it is utterly jarring and at odds with the mood and visual aesthetic of the original film, especially the bizarre in-your-face close-ups of the cartoon character's mouths - it's like something out of The Mask.

I love how some early CGI uses the pretence of being shot at night because they hadn't nailed global illumination yet. This scene takes place inside a huge concrete block, impenetrable by the sun, and lit internally only by invisible handheld torches.

The more I see the film, the longer it seems to take for him running on-screen.

Blade's final fight with Frost. I thought I remembered something about the original script having Frost turn into a demon but they dismissed the design as being crappy, which is hard to imagine seeing as they went with this instead.

The reason they give for changing it is that test audiences kind of lost attention at seeing Blade fight Stephen Dorff as a cartoon blood tornado.
