Yeah, it's a super weird game. It's point and click but in first person 3D.

The whole Simpsons 3d thing, drat. To think it was mindblowing at the time. It doesn't even make much sense now as the plot is clearly only there to force scenes with special effects.

That was eerily prescient though

I am trying to track down something I was remember reading through as a teenager. It was a japanese cg art book that was about some sort of train station and scientist looking men. It was kind of steampunky, but in the early to mid 90s. I don't know if it was part of a bigger animation, or if it was all just done for the artbook. Google has failed me so far.

Maybe something related to Gadget: Invention, Travel, & Adventure? It was a big enough thing at the time to get its own art book. Speaking of 90s CGI...

Cool! Yeah that game is super weird. You can actually get a "HD" version of it on iOS that looks slightly better than that.

Speaking of art books, most of you have probably heard of Zdzislaw Beksinski, a Polish painter who's become internet famous after his death for his absolutely stunning, nightmarish artwork. So a few years ago I bought his art book which is apparently pretty rare these days, but it's funny because it features some of his very last works, where he was evidently just starting to get into computers. Clearly he... was working with new and foreign tools.

So you go from this:

You could run these through Google's Dog-Shoggoth Deep Dream generator thingy and get images closer to what Beksinski intended I think.

Arguably an improvement!

The CGI in Titan A.E came in two flavours: the acceptable but dated starships, and the "what the gently caress were they thinking?" Drej monstrosities.

That alien on the far right is what most of the movie looks like, just for comparison. It's a shame, because as far as rotoscoping goes, the rest of the film has got some really pretty character animation that is let down by a bunch of bad decisions regarding art direction.

I watched Titan AE last year and I don't remember this at all. In fact I remember literally nothing about it. What a great film.

What really drives home how poor it is is that not two years later Disney would put out Treasure Planet which, while not a very good movie, manages to do just about everything Titan A.E. tried with CGI only a zillion times better in every way.

Of course the same year that Titan A.E. came out Disney ruined half of the segments of Fantasia 2000 by making them CGI so even they weren't completely immune.

I've not seen Fantasia 2000 - what was so bad about it? Looking up a few clips on Youtube that CGI looks pretty loving good for the time.
