One example of early CG that still holds up is Insektors.

The art direction is what mostly holds it together.

I'm trying to recall another early CGI thing that might have had been a music video, but one shot was of some sort of crude cylinder robot thing playing giant drums.

Not to mention the huge batch of 90's music videos from 1995 onwards that had some sort of clunked in CG background, such as Michael Jackson's Scream and assorted boy bands of the time.

Billie Piper's Honey to the B comes to mind as stuff that was really bad, even at the time. This was released in 1999.

That sounds like one of the clips in Beyond the Mind's Eye. According to the credits, it's from a short film called Wired directed by Matt Forrest.

It is! Thanks for that.

As for more bad CG from the 90's: Titanic: An Adventure out of Time, which was well regarded back then as it was the first attempt to re-create the ship that footage from the game was used in a few documentaries about the sinking.

This is so much worse than I remember, it's hilarious.

1999 was also the year Janet Jackson decided to team up for two of the most expensive and CGI riddled videos of the year.

It's not like they hadn't used CGI alongside animation before, stuff like that talking cave head in Aladdin, the stampede in Lion King or the cogs in the Mouse Detective showed they were able to blend stuff in convincingly during the early 90's.

Also at that time in the 90's they were moving to digital paint systems like CAPS.

Lest we forget Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future from 1988 - one of the earliest attempts to marry CG with live action on TV.
