Season 1 is absolutely 100% not an overall well-liked season of television w/r/t general viewers. Whether this is because it's not their kind of show or because of the mistakes the season makes is up to the individual. I will say I wanted to like s1 so so much but only stopped hating it after s2 showed me what some of the edges looked like when smoothed

When the first season was airing, I saw the phrase "misery porn" used by people writing the show off. I don't think it's a good descriptor for the show in general, because I think that overall the show is very hopeful. But I can definitely see how someone might draw that conclusion after watching those episodes and not sticking around to see all that bleakness build into something.

I liked the show based on the pilot, but I don't remember being crazy about it until the Matt episode. I think the first two episodes are much better on the rewatch, but that also means nothing in regard to the flaws they present to first time watchers.

I liked the first season a lot but the Guilty Remnant was so annoying

It's like someone came up with a weird aesthetic for a cult "hmm what if they wear white and smoke instead of talking" that doesn't really make sense for the movement tbh and the silence and writing stuff on pads all the time was frustrating to watch as a viewer.

Sure, there were some things in S1 that weren't perfect. Characters who refuse to talk to each other to create tension or further the plot is a thing TV does that I really hate, and they did some of that in S1. They also seem to be pretty aware of that, because in S2 Kevin tells all to Nora and the writers basically told us, "See? Didn't make a difference that he was honest." I appreciated that a lot. They also acknowledged the irritation of watching people writing poo poo down with sharpies and refusing to talk. The GR isn't super fun to watch, I totally understand where you're coming from. When you add the Murphy family in S2, there's less GR just because of time constraints. Although for me Tommy, not the GR, is the weakest thread in the show. He just seems like a total idiot douchebag. Meg is a lot more interesting, and I am just gonna go ahead and straight up accuse you of blindly hating Liv Tyler. :)

But that doesn't mean that S1 was bad television. Posting over and over that S2 is a complete 180 from S1 is an overreaction, in my opinion. A complete 180 would be like, Baywatch.

I honestly think the tone of the two seasons is pretty similar. If S1 is misery porn then S2 is misery porn x2. It had terrible loss AND a terrifying descent into madness. Just because the theme changed and there was more humor punctuating these beats doesn't mean S2 was lighthearted. In both seasons we go from some pretty terrible places to some pretty hopeful places. Both seasons had great production values and great music, although if anything "Where is My Mind" was possibly slightly overused in S2. Both seasons made me feel something pretty awesome.

And let's not forget the most bullshit moment in this show happened in the finale of S2. Some crazy poo poo goes down on the bridge, Nora asks a big cowboy if she can borrow his binoculars, and he just hands them over. That's loving bullshit!

I love this show. Both seasons.

Maybe it is because I binged watch season 1, but I loved it. It would of been in my top 5 of 2014 if I watched it then. That said I do agree season 2 is better. It all just comes together better, and show is a little less depressing. It sucks, because I have several friends who quit on season 1 (to quote one 'it is a miserable show with miserable characters'). I've been trying to tell them that season 2 is one of the best seasons on HBO in ages.

Funny the hate season 1 gets reminds me of the hate for season 1 of Halt & Catch Fire. The critical response went from lukewarm in season 1 to pretty highly positive in season 2. Only difference is while I loved both season, I enjoyed season 1 would more (outside of the finale) than season 2. Half & Catch Fire might be second favorite show on now behind The Leftovers.

I think that it's come up in this thread before. I think that if you're going for a rational reading of the events of the show, that probably fits better than anything else. While he might have seemed kind of annoyed before Meg went into Isaac's house, he definitely seemed more chipper while she was coming out, like he was expecting everything to be fixed now.

You could explain Virgil's "psychic" phenomena similarly. He comes up to Kevin in the visitor's center and tells him that he can help with his Situation. It seems like he knows Kevin is being "haunted," but almost everyone who's coming to Miracle is probably looking for answers, so Virgil could just be playing the odds. And when he approaches Nora in the convenience store, he tells her that he's sorry for her loss. Now, we know that at this point Nora has told the Murphys that she used to have children, but not yet that they Departed (that doesn't happen until Lens). It could be that Virgil has some mystical powers and can see that Nora's children departed because of her "aura" or something similar. But it could also be that Michael mentioned to Virgil that his new neighbor "lost" her kids during one of his night prayer visits, or that Sleepwalking Kevin mentioned it to Virgil. The clerk's response to Virgil, that she told him not to do "that poo poo" in her store, fits either. She could be telling him that his Mystical powers freak out regular people and to knock it off in her store. She could also be telling him that if he's going to be duping people with his hot and cold reading techniques, she doesn't want it associated with her business.

It sucks but here's two things to consider:

1. From the business point of view, they might be assuming that most people who have seen the show still have their HBO subscription and can already watch those episodes anytime they want. So, this would essentially just for people who still rent physical Blu-Ray disks, from smaller chains or through Netflix in the mail.

2. Since the show has already been renewed for a third and final season, I'm hoping that they're focusing their resources on a good collector's set of all three.

Thanks to this thread my wife and I binge watched Mr. Robot. Although I guessed the twist in the first episode (I turned to my wife, and said this is a Fight Club rip off), I have to say the way they handled it and reading interviews with the creator (he said he wanted the audience to know long before the reveal) I am fine with it. The show is definitely in my top 5 of 2015 shows (Leftovers, Halt & Catch Fire, Mad Men, and Fargo are the only shows I think I enjoyed more). Thank God because the last time I watched a show based on a debate in TVIV was Jessica Jones. Overall that was pretty blah (would of been great if only 8 episodes).

I binge watched seasons 1 and 2 and I knew nothing about the series before hand, not even any of the praise given for this show. It propelled to my TOP10 series of all time, so definitely the biggest positive surprise for a while when it comes to TV series.

I see a lot of very differing opinions when it comes to season 1 and pretty much categorical praise for season 2. In my case, I would actually rate season 1 higher, it just feels a bit pointless to do so as the show has an excellent continuum all the way. But just to voice that different opinion to some of you who enjoy taking a poo poo on season 1. Basically, season 1 was where I usually found myself looking at the ceiling in awe with my mouth open when the credits were rolling, sometimes crying a bit and sometimes just appreciating things. It was emotionally more powerful than season 2, and that's meaningful because I usually don't get so emotional about TV series or movies. The scene where Kevin comes back to Mapleton at the end of season 1 to find out what the GR has done was one of the most powerful scenes in TV/movie history.

That said, I did certainly enjoy season 2 as well, it was just a bit different kind of serving. My reactions were mostly along the lines of "drat this is some quality poo poo, oh man now I'm watching quality TV, it's so great to watch a quality series like this". In that sense I can understand how many folks prefer it to season 1, but it also lacked "something" in terms of mood and emotion. Not much, and not easily put in words, but something. "International assassin" was a great episode, but it did suffer slightly from the common "Twin Peaks did all this better 25 years ago" phenomenon.

Hoping for a new setting for season 3, should be awesome in any case.

I don't enjoy the shits I take or took on season 1. I find it an immensely frustrating season because it clearly could be as good as 2 to me if it wasn't for the fact it's too focused on its own misery. I can see how someone could relate to it more on an emotional level, but season 2 is far superior on an actual storytelling level.

Oh yeah I mean I don't think it's a bad season of television anymore. It's an interesting failure, and I'd much rather a show be that than a boring success. But I think accusations that people just enjoy to poo poo on it hide the fact that it has some very legitimate issues.

It's much better when you don't have to wait a week between episodes. The first couple episodes having some pacing issues which are exacerbated by the scenes of GR members communicating via longhand notes, but on rewatching I think they do a fantastic job laying the groundwork for this series.

Don't ask, I don't know how to pronounce my name either.
I too enjoyed season one more than two. I felt like each episode in season one (at least the first 6 or so) focused on telling the story of a specific character and it was compelling. I wanted to know these peoples' story and what the hell was going on in this crazy world. Season two just felt a little weird to me. It felt slower, too. Not that slower is bad. I think that's just how Jarden was supposed to be; slower paced. I know International Assassin was praised by a lot of people but it felt quite out of left field. I don't know exactly what I was expecting, but it wasn't that.

I liked both seasons, but I don't understand how you or anyone could say that season 2 was slower than 1; I found it quite the opposite. Maybe it was the intensity making it feel faster-paced (not that the show is fast-paced at all).

One thing that I'll agree with is that Kevin's return to Mapleton is the best sequence the show has done. I thought season 1 was dragging for it's second half but that whole sequence redeemed the entire show for me. When it was reairing prior to the second season premiere, I actually misremembered it as that being the whole episode and not just the last 15 minutes, since it was so powerful that it overshadowed the entire rest of the ep for me.
