Everything in the underdark has to be super-dangerous because the old Basic module that introduced it (Queen of the Demonweb Pits) was a high-level adventure. Naturally, even the prey species are psionic/spell casting badasses. It's insane and I kinda dig it.

Apparently they were introduced in the Fiend Folio way back in 1981 which is certainly timely enough to get into nethack. I even had that book.

Apologies on the long time between updates, but I've just moved to Shanghai. Getting internet in my tiny yet expensive apartment will take a while longer, but in the meantime I'll play a bit more and get a good bunch of floors going, provided I don't die instantly from something dumb (this will likely be a thing).
