I could imagine winning DoomRL without out-of-character knowledge. I mean, it might not be easy, and there are many things that could trip you up, but you could also get by with a bit of luck and a lot of avoiding named staircases (a perfectly reasonable newbie impulse, I might add). Even corner shooting could be readily discovered by a logical "ohgodhelpmusttakecover" impulse. DoomRL is basically the best roguelike though.
