I have no god drat idea what's going on, so at least you're not alone in your confusion, Espilae. I've played a few roguelikes to the point of competency (most notably Dungeons of Dredmor and Dungeonmans, which I actually managed to beat despite the odds, but those are apparently a fair bit less complex than the average roguelike), but Nethack is still several levels beyond me. So the gameplay style of slamming buttons going "how thing work god damnit loving dog" is something I'm familiar with.
