Nintendo did three Treehouse presentations for Mario Maker yesterday:

Presentation #1 - Miyamoto and Tezuka, bullshitting and showing off the basic features

Presentation #2 - Treehouse dudes showcasing the online sharing functionality, Miiverse integration, Amiibo costumes

Presentation #3 - some bullshitting from the Treehouse guys who made the NWC levels, with a cameo from Miyamoto/Tezuka at the end

Two more Treehouse demos - click (2hrs24mins), click again (6hrs20mins).

Some more details on the amiibo/mystery mushroom skins: the menu has slots for 90 skins, and you don't need the amiibo to play courses that use those skins.

:psyduck: are there even close to 90 different Amiibo out?

Smash has 55 characters and they all have/will have an Amiibo. Animal Crossing is getting 8 Amiibo plus hundreds of Amiibo cards. There's a Super Mario series that has some exclusive characters or variants of characters, Splatoon has 3 Amiibo, fuckin' Chibi-Robo is getting an Amiibo... so to answer your question, they definitely won't be able to fill 90 slots straight away but if they keep cranking out Amiibo it won't take very long.

There are no overworlds or anything like that. 100-Man Mario arranges stages pulled from the internet into a pseudo-game, and I think you can arrange stages into SMB-tyle four-stage worlds.

Yes, you're not restricted to sharing with people on your friends list.

They haven't said how many games the game will come with but there are already a lot of levels in the online database and the game comes packaged with a book that contains a bunch more stages.

If you mean paid DLC that adds more features to the editor, I haven't seen them mention anything thus far. If you mean new stages made by people at Nintendo, almost definitely.

Yes, certain powerups and abilities are restricted to certain styles - you can't use the cape outside of the SMW style, for example. I think all the enemies work across all styles, though.

I don't think you can manually assign songs to stages, they're automatically selected depending on the combination of skin (SMB/SMB3/SMW/NSMB) and level type (above-ground, underground, underwater, castle, airship, ghost house). There are new tunes/arranges for the combos that didn't originally exist - SMW has a new arranged airship tune, SMB has new tunes for airship/ghost house, etc.

There'll be a Nintendo-curated category in addition to what's new, what's hot, etc and I imagine they'll do a good job of featuring interested stages that aren't just kaizo gauntlets.

Yeah, wearing a mystery mushroom skin changes the sfx.

For those who haven't seen it, Game Center CX did a live event where Arino challenged a bunch of people to play his Mario Maker stages, including Miyamoto. (He also attempts to play SMB with a Mario DDR dance mat.)

The Course World database is split into three sections - Nintendo-curated courses, high-rated courses and new courses - and you can further narrow your search based on upload date, region and difficulty (determined based on the percentage of players who were able to beat the course). You can also view a list of popular creators based on ranking, view their uploaded courses and courses they've rated and follow individual creators. (I have no idea if you can do non-public trades with friends... maybe they'll add player communities?)

If you don't want to think too hard, you can just play the 100 Mario Challenge mode which automatically pulls stages from the database and challenges you to clear them all within 100 tries.

How dare they expand on the original engines with this garbage? They even messed up the horizontal sprite limit, ugh! I'll stick to Lunar Magic thank you.

Noone cares that it's not an exact replica of the original games (I lied, lots of people care and their purchase is entirely contingent on feature xyz being 1:1 to each game, they're dumb) but I do wish they'd give you more freedom to play with the structure a little - not just through older features like locking the screen scroll or SMB castle loops or whatever but newer features like red coins and NSMB2 coin rush or even just being able to put the flagpole on the far left rather than the far right or something.

Digital download size is 1.4GB, and you can play with the gamepad, sideways Wiimote, Classic Controller or Pro Controller.

I havent seen it anywhere, is there an option to choose the music for a stage you create? I was actually hoping they'd finally do orchestrated versions of the SML2 leitmotifs and put them in there. I'm pretty sure you're stuck with the tunes specific to the tileset/motif you picked but they did go to the effort of writing new tunes for the combinations that didn't exist before - there are original tunes for SMB/SMB3 ghost houses, SMB/SMW airships, etc.

Well, the various editor options gradually unlock after days of play, so maybe you could structure it as a design challenge or something? Like, take requests from people for level themes/gimmicks/stipulations until you've unlocked everything, and then intersperse that with footage where you just play 10/100-Mario Challenge or whatever.

Smash replays are basically just running off button inputs, so if you change the way the moves work the playback is not going to be accurate. There's no way around this.

Either way, they already explained why there are no youtube upload features and it's because the producer wants people to "experience the game by playing, not by watching".

That's a loving dumb position to take when Youtube videos can serve as a great way to advertise levels that people will then go and actually play. They should at least set up some sort of way to queue levels up from a website to play later.

It's a specific type of dumb answer that they tend to give when they don't want to admit there are practical reasons for not doing something, like "it's too much work" or "it can't fit into the schedule".

They clearly understand the value of videos and streams at this point - a few games have Youtube uploads built in now, they've been putting all their games in the hands of streamers and youtube people and doing press tours that are totally isolated from the traditional games media, and they even bought a reasonably large stake in the company that owns Nico Nico Douga, Japan's youtube equivalent.
