You can unlock skins through 100 Mario Challenge, so you won't necessarily need amiibos and not all of them will probably be amiibos. Can you imagine if Pac-Man and Mega Man are in this game? Pac-Man and Mega Man in an actual (sort of) Mario game? Shiiiiit.

I'm pretty sure they or someone have said you can unlock the Mystery Mushroom skins through 100 Mario Challenge. EDIT: A-yup, here it is in action. Holy poo poo, the ending cutscene with Toad probably changes graphically/musically with all four game styles AND he probably says something for each costume too. Holy poo poo edit 2: Pikachu and probably all of the other Pokemon don't come with their own sound effects and music. Apparently there's sound effect triggers for boss fight music and bonus room music, and they play based on proximity (not time) after you touch them. But you can just place them some distance apart along the area and they play continuously. Pretty neat!
