Honestly if there was any realism the spear would be >>>>>>>....> all. And then Cavalry would do effective damage against infantry.
Have a long enough sharp stick and a horse and you might as well crown yourself King of one on one battle.

The funny thing is you're also falling for the sword hype :cheeky:

An axe made for combat is about the same weight as a sword, and there's certainly more to it than just "letting gravity do the work". Swords get hyped precisely because they are difficult and expensive to make, but which weapon is "better" depends entirely on circumstances.

Balance and weight distribution is important, don't forget. Axes want most of their weight right on the tip.
Swords are balanced so the center of weight is right about where the hilt is. Really the biggest advantage swords have is that you can't really 'miss', as long the blade touches body mass you have made progress, as well as the versatility in the usage of stabs and slashes.

Another good thing about an axe is that you can stick it on the end of a pole and BAM you have an immensely effective weapon.
In fact, stick anything on the end of a pole and you have an immensely effective weapon.

Rip off your fist and put it on the end of a long pole.

A lot of this stuff also depends on formations, which there just aren't any rules for in FE.

Yeah which is why I said one on one battle, seeing as every person in FE has a crippling predilection to only fight one on one at a time and take turns while doing so.
