Maybe having a "national discussion" could include allowing the CDC to research gun violence, so we could have better data on the subject and accordingly have better informed discourse and public policy? Is that something you could get behind? Edible Hat fucked around with this message at 16:58 on Dec 3, 2015 |

Besides resources, no. However, private funding of research has not been filling the hole left by the 20 year ban on research at the CDC. Also, it does not seem valid to compare a (highly concealable) tool whose sole ability is to (effectively) maim or kill another living being -- I'll also grant that there are recreational uses as well -- with a pressure cooker. I'd like to hear why you think they are comparable? Is there a problem with pressure cooker violence that I'm not aware of? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLo7z50Tt2g Edible Hat fucked around with this message at 17:20 on Dec 3, 2015 |

Scratch Monkey posted:That worked out well in France. Laws are, ideally, about shifting the probability of a certain outcome toward a favorable (or favored) direction. Laws outlawing murder, while ineffective at stopping all instances of murder, have the effect of reducing the number of murders (in establishing punishments for the crime, for example). From this crude utilitarian perspective, I think we can agree that laws against murder are effective and necessary, assuming you believe it is a matter of a nation's public policy to involve itself with mitigating the killing of its citizens. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zP1AoocnoXM

VagueRant posted:I love that the article literally just describes a noteworthy ongoing cultural change with no editorialising or celebration or "positive spin", it's an actual report of news, and people are projecting their own controversies onto it. The twitter shots even screencap the part that says the war has made things worse for women overall (because obviously). If you enjoy watching A League of Their Own, then you support the firebombing of Tokyo. It just makes sense. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPJHQmJAiKA
