you should use tabs and not spaces. spaces take 4 backspace presses to undo (or 3 if you set it to that). you can also adjust the width of a hard tab afterwards. there are some cases, like when writing JSX (HTML embedded in javascript that gets compiled to JS elements in the React framework) where tabs don't line up like code:
thank you

i was using visual studio a few days ago and it was set up for hard tabs out of the box like a good ide should, but then i started to insert like an if statement or a for loop or something and it automatically indented the line i already had below it which i didn't want so i went to remove the indentation and i had to backspace four spaces goddamnit ballmer you gently caress

Smythe posted:what the gently caress?? it is also VIM's default, so I don't have to change anything. GitHub seems to like it too. If you are running out of screen due to the number of tabs it means your code needs some serious refactoring, clean it up already. I guess it highly depends on your font, MSVC likes a fat glyph. elastic tabs supremacyquote:This animated diagram shows how the elastic tabstops mechanism aligns text. A tab character is represented as a vertical line. he wrote a plugin for visual studio too, i don't know i've never tried it

get diff viewer and chode review plugins for the ide then but yeah while that gif looks awesome it is kind of asking for trouble

jony ive aces posted:get diff viewer and chode review plugins for the ide then you usually look at diffs when digging through commits history to find out where some weird code is coming from and that's easiest to do it inside of for instance the perforce browser and its time-lapse view especially if you use a bad ide like visual studio that sucks at browsing the project files as it insists in having its own file tree instead of just displaying the filesystem for code reviews i want to just click on the link in the review email and get to a web page where i can see the diffs without messing with my running instance of visual studio which already have a hard enough time not to poo poo itself all the time
