Star Fox Zero is the first wholly new Star Fox game in a decade and is due :siren:22nd April 2016:siren:.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htMRhXPzYhY

So what is it?
  • Star Fox Zero is a loose retelling of Star Fox SNES (Starwing) and Star Fox 64 (Lylat Wars) co-developed by Nintendo and Platinum Games.
  • Fox the Fox, Falco the Falcon, Peppy the Hare, Slippy the Toad and ROB the Robot must save Lylat the system from Andross the giant robot mad scientist monkey and his primate army. Star Wolf, Katt, and Bill are also back.
  • Naturally, you will be flying the Arwing, but in this iteration it can transform into a chicken like Walker form for ground based combat - this ability appeared in the unreleased Star Fox 2. The Landmaster also returns and can also transform in the Gravmaster for brief moments of flight (distinct from hovering). Zero introduces the Gyrowing, a VTOL helicopter that drops a tiny NES ROB robot called Direct-i that can enter tight spaces.
  • Both on-rail levels and all-range mode stages are in. Branching paths within levels are in. Mission Complete/Accomplished alternate end states are in. Multiple missions per planet.
  • No online or competitive multiplayer. Co-op is in with one play driving and one player shooting.

I heard there are motion controls?
  • The action is displayed on the TV, and you control your ship's movements with the left stick, and boost/brakes/rolls/somersaults/U-turns are done with the right stick.
  • ZR fires, and in all-range mode ZL activates Target Lock giving you a "cinematic" view of the enemy.
  • The Gamepad screen always displays the cockpit view (but this is a Wii U so the screens can switch).
  • Moving the Gamepad lets you look around the cockpit and allows you to see and shoot beyond the boundaries of the TV screen. This supposedly allows for finer aiming, fly-bys, and frees you from having to fly into the thing you're aiming at.

amiibo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UU58FkS_Mjo
  • The Fox amiibo unlocks retro SNES style Arwings and the classic Corneria music. This also elimates the homing shot since that wasn't in that game.
  • The Falco amiibo unlocks a black and red Arwing that looks rad, can lock on to two targets, but takes 3x damage.
  • It's not yet clear if these can be unlocked via gameplay and if amiibo are instant unlocks or if they're amiibo only. Maybe wait and see.
Star Fox Guard

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKrWASv0-Mo

One of Miyamoto's pet projects from a couple E3's ago is complete and been given a Star Fox lick of paint. Slippy Toad and his rich uncle Grippy try to stop robots from destroying their poo poo in this Five Nights at Freddy's meets tower defense game. 100 missions. Place your guns, switch between 12 cameras, and shoot cute robots. Collect minerals. Levels can be edited and uploaded and shared Mario Maker style.

Guard is available digitally everywhere. In the US, Guard is included as a download code in every copy of Zero. In the UK, there is a First Print Edition exclusive to GAME that includes Guard on a disc. Zero and Guard can both be bought digitally at a discount.

Where's Krystal?

I'm legitimately overjoyed they're remaking the first game for the third time, mainly because I liked Starwing at the time and 64 is probably my personal favourite of all games. I feel like any attempt at retaining some kind of continuity out of the subsequent games is dumb, and I think this could be the second best Star Fox game by virtue of not being Adventures, Assault, or Command.

I would absolutely settle for a regular Arwing amiibo.

As for Krystal, she's always felt a bit "Sonic's Friends" to me. I wont miss her, and if they do something neat with her in the game, more's the better. I would like a level set on dinosaur planet though.

An Arwing model or toy is somethin I've wanted for a long time.

Adventures was the first Zelda game I ever played (and beat) out of sheer love of Star Fox, but I do think it should have been treated as a Revengeance-esque spin-off that wasn't mentioned again.

Am I crazy for hating Assault's vehicle designs and general aesthetic? Or am I just starting to sound like a N64 purist :v:

I think I'd really like it if this game had side stories. Like, after I beat the game, let me come back as Star Wolf and make all the messes Fox has to undo later. Actually, there's a good use for Krystal. Show me her leading a Saurian team of space fighters. Gimmie a triceratops wingman, or a velociraptor. She could be named Vel Clevagal.

It's probably not what you're describing and will be more remix-y rather than all new poo poo but apparently there are supposed to be extra missions on the same stage.

They've said that they got the 64 cast so whether that extends to Wolf and they go for the same delivery (why wouldn't they considering everything else?) then it's likely?

Although looking at IMDB the original actor hasn't worked for 6 years and was picked up by someone else in 64 3D so who knows.

WELP. Delayed to Q1 2016.

Miyamoto posted:

I made a big decision last week.

We have been developing Star Fox Zero for Wii U with the aim of releasing it this year. Although we felt that the development had been progressing well, we now believe that we will need a little more time to work on areas such as the unprecedented discovery that we want players to experience in the game by using two screens, and further polishing the level designs and perfecting the tone of the cut scenes.

While we have already reached the stage where it would be technically possible to release the title in time for the year-end holiday season, we want to polish the game a bit more so that players will be able to more smoothly grasp the new style of play that we are proposing.

To the people looking forward to the launch of the game this holiday season, I am very sorry.

Star Fox Zero is going to bring new game play and experiences that take it far beyond the framework established by Star Fox 64. All the members of the development team are doing our best so that the final product will not betray your expectations. And the game will not be delayed for a very long time – we're aiming to launch the game in Q1 2016. Please stay tuned for further announcements.

As per this dude: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dt6WXVUim8I&t=596s

-Fox amiibo unlocks Retro Arwings for the whole crew (and old Corneria music)
-Falco amiibo unlocks a Black Arwing that takes triple damage but can lock-on to two targets.
-More than one mission per planet seemingly in addition to the alternate paths.
-"Arcade Mode"
-"?????" on the main menu.
-Bill sounds like Danny Glover.

Files sizes are in. Zero is 7514.10 MB (7.5 GB), Guard is 2329.41 MB (2.3 GB). This is according to the EU verisons which occasionally have slightly larger sizes due to languages but these are the max sizes.

The secret might already be out, been hearing a lot of groundswell about a plot twist that I can't find the source for but a lot of people believe. It's a multiverse plot and we've only seen the 64 stuff, the portals are tied to it somehow and later stuff will show up.

One piece of evidence I know I've seen is Venom is a little before the halfway point on the overall score chart- and all the 64 planets/areas are before it leaving a massive gap of mystery locations.

I haven't researched yet but I'm highly dubious of this and it sounds like a misunderstanding of that map screen. It's from the video that I linked implying that there are two versions of each of the 10 planets/places and you might be backtracking. In that video, Corneria 1 was called "Enter Star Fox" and Corneria 2 was called "Hidden Plans".

Also, some Guard offscreen treehouse walkthrough gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZQakybM23o

Have the same dude playing Zero because you see some stuff too. Including apparently a level select so maybe that Arcade Mode I saw is a more traditional mode? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGD81O4aK2c

Shot for shot remake of 64's 8D

UK goons - something I didn't realise until now, the First Print Edition is a GAME exclusive. If you want Guard on a physical disc, you'll have to get it from them. And it seems that there isn't a Guard download code in standard editions in the UK.

In the US, every copy of Zero comes with a code for Guard.

Unless you're in the UK and purchasing frrom one specific store, it's best to think of Guard as download only. There may be a complementary code in the box.

Guard's "code-in-a-box" release is literally a separate retail box on the shelf, only with a code instead of a disc; it's not a pack-in with Zero. NOE does that occasionally.

The Guard/pack-in thing is weirdly overcomplicated 8D

The US Amazon store and Gamestop at least are selling Guard as a bonus code with all copies of Zero. I've yet to see anyone anywhere selling Guard alone yet, despite seeing that one part of that trailer. The EU situation, from what I've seen thus far, the only boxed Guard is in the First Print Edition and that's a disc.

I lied, have a gameplay dump:

Co-op - warning, British:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtMdR0k6sAE
Black Arwing - requires Falco amiibo:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2POYwB1oz3g
Sector Omega (coverage has been calling it Gamma but it's Omega) - fast as gently caress and a familiar boss:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Xnr587jdDw
Asteroid Field - not its own true level but apparently one of mini mid-path levels:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cimVniTYL8
Corneria 2 - whatever that means:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XkulJbiFJY
Sector Beta - taking down the final ship actually looks pretty cool:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VP4UD7dTWmg
Wolf battle - Wolfen transformation and rad music:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieZ5PQrKisc
Sector Alpha - Sector Y remake:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhXLjTh9yYg
Area 3 Phase 1 - Pigma fight in space:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YySHtuqn3Ug
Area 3 Phase 2 - Walker:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Iyt_UxjTNs

Also, of note: Your first playthrough will be linear - you will unlock transformations and abilities as you progress, and you'll be able to backtrack and play any level at any time from the map screen. You will unlock alternate paths by playing old levels with new abilities. Presumably, that Arcade Mode on the menu screen enables a more classic route based system.

Here's some gameplay I missed from earlier in the week showing off some sections that haven't been shown much:

Sector Gamma - Sort of a Sector Z remake:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVeRHRRBqF4
Sector Beta - After destroying the ship, and after Star Wolf show up, Wolf himself appears and merges concepts from Sector X:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTTm_kVqvds

I've actually been looking at a possibly completed map and trying to match what was on it compared to all the footage I've seen, and all it has done is make the map even more confusing. There seem to be a ton of paths/routes to planets and seemingly mid-path encounters between two levels where you protect Great Fox or face an additional boss. I dunno. Exciting though. Reminder that the first playthrough is linear (eg Walker mode is locked until Area 3 so the Cornerian alternate path can't be done until a later replay) and subsequent playthroughs and replays (via level select or whatever) are what will open up new routes.
