The old thread was archived, so here's a new one! It's pretty damned hot this week and today is still supposed to be 100+ degrees so I don't know how long it'll be up...but for now the cam is running! http://www.ustream.tv/channel/chickam2008 The angle is a bit different, it's showing the other side of the coop/run today (and some of our new trees & shrubs--!). We're trying to set it up where they've been hanging out. Also, we have some watermelon we're going to put out in a bit! Come see some hot chicks!

Faerunner posted:Ooooh, shiny new thread! VS, what's the fire situation? Unlike certain other posters, I do NOT want you to have to bring your chickens inside because I care about your sanity and the welfare of your dining room furniture >_> The Washington fire (the one 20 miles from us, now at 17,800 acres) is now something like 90% contained, so it's doing well. Of course this is thunderstorm season with tons of lightning strikes all around, so new fires occur daily. But so far, so good! I have no desire to have 63 chickens in my house, either.

Again, no Chickam today, sorry...major thunderstorming going on here today. They say this horrid weather is gonna gently caress off next week. Can't wait.

Welp, this week we've successfully rehomed 10 of the chicks, plus two adult roos--Buzzard, who hatched last year, and Bloop. Much as I liked Bloop and tried to give him every chance, he never mellowed out. He went to a new home where he'll have some little banty hens to himself and hopefully be a happier little guy.

The chicks that we rehomed were: Ham, Ninja, Buttercup, Diane, Tikka, Pluffy, Seagoat, Kevin, Sushi and Theo. All of the others are still with us for now, including Blossom, the last remaining Silkie mix hen. Things are already MUCH calmer in the flock today with two roos gone!

No change for the hens, as far as the roos go it's basically the same, just quieter and much calmer. Cam is Head Roo, then Frosty/Mushroom/Cowbell, then Weedcat. Cam pretty much ignores Weeds and spends his time chasing Frosty, Cowbell and Mushroom, who spend THEIR time chasing each other. Weeds is the winner by going quietly off to his favorite spot, a large shady area under a big tree (best spot in the yard, with a water dish and the prime deep dustbathing dirt) with his little hen harem and hanging out with them.

Inveigle posted:Who belongs to Weeds' hen harem? Who is now Head Hen? Weed's Head Hen (main squeeze, actually) is Pie, who is very timid--she is madly in love with him and never leaves his side, gets all upset if another roo chases her and will run back to Weeds. A few of the three year old hens hang out with him as well--Burger, Rambo, Wotsit, Baba, Bob and Elizabeak. Since he's so laid back all of the hens just kinda naturally want to hang with him (especially when he's dustbathing, he's a chick magnet), as do this year's chicks. Cam really only gets jealous if all of the hens in lay are hanging around Weeds. Pretty much Linc is Head Hen, but isn't the clear leader that our past Head Hens have been--she's too busy looking for food to worry about defending her position or the pecking order. Weeds tried to defend Pele's honor today when she was being chased by Frosty and accidentally stepped on her head.

Running the cam today since the weather has improved! The Wheel Of Food (apples) has been placed--it's the first time the chicks have seen it, so there should be loads of staring and alarmed cackling. http://www.ustream.tv/channel/chickam2008 VVV I noticed that, too! ^^^^ Yes, Mushroom is a bantam Cochin. All those feathers make him look larger than he is. Currently he is running around with a dead mouse he doesn't want to share, and Snakefast is chasing him all over the place. Ick. We've got a small window of good weather before our winter storm moves in! The cam is up...along with an annual 'special visitor'. Cam HATES him.

The quail are wild, they hang out with the chickens all the time. 12-String calls them 'Chickens with funny hats'. The kid is lobbying for us to hatch quail next Spring (along with an emu, God help us), I told her they'd probably go wild pretty quick once they were put outside...she says she's OK with it. We'll see. Don't know what the Hell to think of an emu...

Well...another weekend of winter, so no Chickam again. It was -1 last night. Instead, enjoy our foot and a half of snow and giant, gently caress-off icicles! They're everywhere. On the house... On the garage... I especially enjoy the four foot long one on the corner. Every time I look up there I'm reminded that we get to repaint the eaves come Springtime. The coop and run didn't escape, either. Cluckadorkle went exploring and stood and simply stared at us when we were yelling, DON'T STAND THERE, YA DUMB BIRD! Lucky for her the Death Snow Wad did not dump on her little chicken head. But snow or no snow, Jimmy always has fun!

Faerunner posted:It's almost time for a new hatch thread... By the way, we talked the other night and have decided that this year's Chickam hatch will be done the old-fashioned way...with a hen! This will make it a bit different as you won't be able the actually SEE the chicks emerge from the shells (mama stays clamped down pretty tightly) but on the plus side, you'll be able to see how a mama hen handles hatching chicks...and watching a broody hen mother chicks is sweet enough to nearly kill you. We plan on setting no more than a mixed variety of 12-14 of our eggs (no mail-order eggs this time) under one of the larger hens (if we have no large broody hens, it'll be a banty with only 5-6 eggs). It may also mean that the hatch is delayed a month or so beyond the norm--probably around April or May--as we wait for a suitable hen who will stay broody and be a good mama. Of course we will have the ReptiPro running and standing by for any contingency like mama abandoning the eggs/chicks or turning on them for some reason, but it would be very unlikely we'd need it. Everyone hope for a huge Brahma or Giant Cochin fluffybutt to go broody!

AtomikKrab posted:Will you put up the cam as soon as the hen begins her overwatch? I could spend 24 days looking at an angry chikken. It would be kinda like watching paint dry...they go into a trance and sit for hours, until it's time to suddenly stomp off the nest for a few minutes to angrily eat, get an angry drink and take a HUGE, deathstinking poop, which makes the humans angry as they run away, desperate for fresh air. We'd put up the cam when we moved her into the house on day 19 or 20 of the 21 day incubation cycle.

More winter weather for us this weekend, so no cam today...we'll have to wait & see what tomorrow is like but i'm willing to bet it'll be just like today. Stupid El Nino.

They ended up hanging out on the back porch wanting inside the house. When it was time to feed them, all we heard was plaintive whining at the back door. Zip was busy digging a hole next to the house at dinnertime, watching her go back and forth, indecisive whether to keep digging her really cool hole or go eat yummy chickin fud, was hilarious. First-world chicken problems... And no, they never *did* get inside the house.
