Cross posting from the other Alien thread I know we've knocked around ideas for an Isolation franchise. I saw this: https://www.cbr.com/untitled-terminator-survival-game-announcement-trailer-nacon/ Which they're labeling a Terminator Survivor game Not much info on it at all but a survivor/isolation approach to Terminator sounds like the right way to go and would be a refreshing change up from the shooter games we usually get

feedmyleg posted:Sounds like a great concept. I really think so too. An approach that captures the unstoppable juggernaut of T1 and the idea of not being able to fight it (not with these weapons) I think would really amp up the tension. Also, it would make crafting interesting for a change since you can only really build things that slow it down, not kill it. SOme combination of Isolation and typical survivor horror could really land in a sweet spot if it's done right. Hell, if you simply HAD to add an escort mission, tracking Sarah through the nightclub and picking out the Terminator from the crowd is right there. Then you drop Arnold with a shotgun and it buys you 5 or 10 seconds to go find a truck or something.

The PS2 The Thing game was loving great except they somehow broke the very central mechanic of how it was supposed to actually work and the main thing that was supposed to be the hook and drive the gameplay.

On top of that, he was chained to a chair and I'd just administered a blood test. I get that the game needed a certain amount of scripted elements to keep it moving but there were probably 100 different ways to still do that without making the items in your inventory and the trust meter basically mean nothing.

WE made a house rule for Fate of the Nostromo that works well. WE marked one of the two Jonesy tiles with a marker and treat it as a facehugger. ANy character who discovers it immediately goes to medbay and stays there (losing their turns) until another character can get there and use a medkit to revive them. It works well, doesn't upset game balance as far as we could tell and adds another little bit of flavor.

Prometheus and Covenant throw some really tantalizing ideas at you about what the black goo's deal might be, but never enough to prove any one particular theory. The xeno in Alien is similar. We know what it does, it kills. It's the other questions that are interesting. I think the more you try to explain the xenos, the less scary and compelling they become. The whole "what the gently caress IS THIS poo poo??" element of the first film is what made it so scary and the swarming, bug like, hive minded approach in Aliens where they're just space bugs and holy poo poo jesus christ game over, man, made that film work too. I don't need to know their origins and have them bred in a lab or whatever so much as an acid blood cockroach invasion from outer space with two sets of jaws that's utterly horrific and no one understands. But that's just me.

Neo Rasa posted:I love the board game, some people think it's too easy but someone in this thread (bigger boat?) made some decent house rules for it if you want a hard mode. The game's hard mode option is to add Ash into play. Ash basically behaves like the Alien except instead of draining your morale he makes you drop your poo poo/wastes your time lol Game is fun. And, yeah, the house rule we added to replace one Jonesey tile (or both if you want) with a "facehugger" that immediately sends the player to Med Bay and lose their turn(s) until another player can reach the area and heal them. It can take a player out of action for a decent amount of time depending on how it plays out. That's the only house rule we use. And if the game seems too easy, just reduce the turn counter by a few rounds or remove some scrap tokens. My son and I didn't find to to be too easy but it's simple to balance.

Payndz posted:I just noticed how perfectly Alien fits the Hollywood three-act template. Omitting the credits, the film is 107 minutes long (in my PAL DVD rip, anyway). Dividing that according to standard screenplay structure, after establishing the characters and setting up the story, Act 1 should end with a turning point at around 27 minutes. Act 2 has another turning point at the halfway mark (53.5 minutes), and transitions to Act 3 at circa 80 minutes with still another turning point, after which everything escalates towards the finale. Agreed. I think that's why the first film works so well in spite of being a bit of a slow burn. Conversely, I think that's why the director's cut of Aliens is rightfully criticized as being poorly paced and way too slow in the first half.

Isolation was the poo poo and I wish it had sold better because I think the formula and template could work with other properties. Terminator, Halloween, Predator, Friday the 13th, etc. Or hell just make a direct sequel and have more aliens or something.

Neo Rasa posted:Hell yes. A Terminator game built around that setup would be incredible My vision for it is probably less hiding and more running, where the items you craft and discover slow it down rather than scare it away and the idea is to make it through to the next area/level (police station, factory, etc.) and you have to use the environment in clever ways. Maybe add a few vehicle chases to break things up a little.

The space creature, known for its relentless pursuit of prey, will be the next licensed character to join the roster. With its debut in the 1979 film Alien and subsequent appearances in various movies and video games, the Xenomorph is undoubtedly one of the most terrifying monsters in cinematic history. This game any good?

Overheard my boss today talking about how great Alien: Isolation was and I it reminded me of how much I'd love to see a sequel and an entire "Isolation" franchise. You could do Terminator, Jurassic Park, Halloween, Friday the 13th Isolation style games for a good minute. Everyone I've ever talked to played A:I loved it and I'm not sure how that formula didn't really ever catch on.

Baronjutter posted:It's can often be obvious from a trailer if something is going to be horrible, but its almost impossible to ever tell from a trailer if something will be good. The trailer looks fine, lot of potential. But we really won't know a thing until the movie is actually out. All true. I'm optimistic about what I saw though since it seems to get back to what I want and like about an Alien movie. I'm all in for a back to the basics approach with this franchise. Reminds me in that way of the trailer for Prey, which I still haven't seen yet but heard was good. The best trailers set a tone and make you want to see more without giving the whole film away. Also worth noting I think that 9 out of 10 times when a trailer looks like complete poo poo, it usually is complete poo poo. But the ratio of good trailer to good movie ratio is far higher.
