A lot of people are pointing to anxieties about race, but I am also detecting some anxieties about technology and some of their thoughts seem very similar to ideas expressed in the unabomber's manifesto. That also plays into what other people are saying about the idea that smart people think they are smart enough to know how to run society. This was something the unabomber clearly also felt if you read his writings.
