This show is so stupidly over the top with it's jingoism, and it just gets more ridiculous as it goes on. Baldwin's character has spent the last 4 episodes watching things happen on TV/radio and just yelled "GO ON!" "GET IN!" or "BOOM!" and it's amazing.

Seriously.

I don't know if I would call this show legitimately -good-, but it's fun super-patriotism popcorn watching, and the sub episode was legitimately pretty tense and fun to watch.

It doesn't need to be "good" for klaxons, people yelling FLANK SPEED and torpedoes in the water to be awesome.
Also this episode they finally remembered the Arleigh Burke class are guided missile destroyers, so if they have any SFX budget to work with I think the rest of the season should be some good naval fun times. It's payload includes missile delivery of torpedoes which is awesome and should be used instead of those on-deck launchers.

It was a bit jarring that they made deliberate and specific mentions of spearfish, but then it wasn't used for some reason, or was used and put onscreen in a rather inaccurate way. The WWII era 'phew, missed by a couple of feet!' is a bit silly, because in reality they're 150km/h homing torpedoes designed to miss and explode in very close proximity and split the hull open. The chance of them missing is nigh on impossible without countermeasures, and even if it did miss, the drat things will lap around, turn and reacquire automatically. (decoys needed, not just steering a little)
There could have been a neat ~~command moment~~ when Chandler gets the countermeasures exactly right and saves the day, perfectly mirroring Slatterly's confidence in him earlier in the episode. Would have been tight poo poo man.

The whole lying to people and murdering them was no good, but really, if there's a virus with a 95% mortality rate, having a means of body disposal is actually a pretty good idea. I doubt they'd make a good fuel source though.

As depicted, the process was similar to cremation, which doesn't produce any energy at all; burning off all the water and combusting that which doesn't freely burn uses more energy than you can gain.
However they were perhaps hinting at something less PG, and were skinning people and burning the fat. Human fat is pretty similar to pig fat, and you don't need to have made a lot of bacon to know it is dangerous if left on the heat too long.
It's touted as an all-in-one evil solution though, which implies the cremation angle, so it's probably just bad science.

Did anyone else wave their flag with tears streaming down their face, at the beauty of this most patriotic of foreshadowing?

The whole final scene with the "we printed you an Oval Naval Office like in the pictures MISTER PRESIDENT" was super cringe-worthy but the rest of the episode was some surprisingly watchable thriller action.

e: I can't actually think of a scenario in fiction or reality that's ever been more "eggs in one basket" than the Nathan James is right now.

- Only schematic of the cure? Check
- Only scientist likely to be able to synthesise the cure? Check

Another ST theme; I was reminded of how impotent photon-torpedo hits look when they're meant to be these devices that vastly outclass nuclear warheads in yield, but seem to just knock over their tea and make Worf look annoyed.

That ship should be in pieces.

Other than that this episode showed promise of some actual good TV. I almost feel like I might unironically recommend it soon!

But that's only because Australians can actually aim their torpedos. That's pretty cool, though.

The James took a direct hit; the torps are homing and designed to explode near the ship, not hit it. The yield on modern torps is huge, with the idea being to simply split the hull outright (like in the video) or cause massive crew casualties in the least case.

Which isn't to be said just to moan about ~~accuracy~~ but to simply say it's kinda annoying that the big bad threat will simply scratch the paint if the plot armour calls for it.

I can think of no finer comment on the show than my thoughts during the episode. When they were stood on the beach waving the bluetooth magi-scan around they pointed it out to sea, but largely at some gulls.

I thought "oh, well, so they're going with bluetooth birds"

That I could have this thought makes this a unique TV show worthy of all our time.

Yea flood the network, im a computer guy and im p sure that will work.

What's your problem with inter-state bluetooth? It's legit.

Really liked the episode. Complete bullshit as usual but it was really well sold.

e: by "flood the network" they meant to drown out people going "err i dont see poo poo" with lots of (fake) people saying "ITS RIGHT THERE LOOK ITS DOING 40knots SOMEHOW!"
I kinda liked the concept.

Did you not hear them yelling FLANK SPEED or something?
