Welcome to the TVIV Game Show Megathread your megathread for all things game shows and quiz shows. A simple thread with a simple purpose, talking about game shows, past and present, syndicated or prime-time to overseas shows and everything in between. And now some basic rules of the thread. 1. No debating/flaming I really don't care who is the better host of The Price is Right - Barker or Carey. I don't care that "Steve Harvey is no Richard Dawson", of course not, Dawson starred in "The Running Man". 2. Show changes/updates aren't everything You have no idea how bad the Game Show Community is outside of these forums, when you see a 13-page thread dedicated to carpet on "The Price is Right", that's right, carpet. 3. Videos are acceptable, as long as they aren't currently on-air shows If you want to talk about a really old 1960s episode of "What's My Line?" and want to post it, feel free. But unfortunately, I would not recommend posting some episode of Hollywood Game Night, unless it's through their website or Hulu. 4. For the love of god, these are game shows. It's a medium where we celebrate people winning toasters and crying over winning trips to Aruba, it's not everything. Don't take it so seriously. The Price is Right Host: Drew Carey Channel: CBS Dates & Times: Check Your Local Listings (Daytime) One-Sentence Synopsis: People guess the price of items they'll never want or need, in the hopes they get to play "Plinko", but ultimately end up getting stuck with "Cliff Hangers". Buzzr Play If you can't afford GSN, there is a digital antenna channel in select markets called Buzzr that showcases old Fremantle shows (Press Your Luck, Card Sharks, Match Game, etc.) and it's sister site, Buzzr Games which shows all your favorite YouTube celebrities (like Mega64) playing some Game Shows from their own library. Now it's a person you brought shows up and can answer the question for as long as possible until you final answer or walk away. Does Celebrity Name Game has specific rules about what you can and can't use for clues? I watched a youtube clip and the celebrity was Jennifer Lawrence and the woman says something like "she has the same first name as a latina singer with a big rear end," which just seems like a very roundabout way of getting someone to guess the name of literally the most popular actress working today.

Sometimes people don't know the celebrities do they work around it. People like Denzel Washington are met with "the first president of the United States" and as long as they don't say the first or last name in their clue (or what I assume going "starts with a j and rhymes with Pennifer Jawrince") then it's okay. When it's the this round and Craig gives clues, he just gives up eventually and says the name. Still no Geoff Peterson though.

Buzzr is an awesome subchannel if you get it. It's on all FOX O&O stations if you live near one. If FOX has a duopoly with MYTV in your city like in Los Angeles then you might find it on the MYTV subchannels. It's GSN they way GSN used to operate by rolling classic games like Press Your Luck, Card Sharks, Let's Make A Deal, Dawson era Family Feud, Match Game; The list goes on and on. Basically, if it's a Mark Goodson/Bill Todman game chances are it could potentially roll on Buzzr in the near future. Fremantle North America has a stake in Buzzr and owns the masters for the entire Mark Goodson/Bill Toddman library which includes the Bob Barker era of TPIR. While TPIR isn't on the schedule at the moment there really isn't anything from stopping Fremantle putting classic TPIR on the air as long as no prizes feature fur coats or Holly Holstrom as a Barker Beauty. Bob still has a line in his contract where he refuses to allow his likeness to be aired if Holly is a prize model because he's pissed she successfully sued his rear end for an undisclosed amount back around the turn of the century after a long drawn out legal battle that Camp Barker stalled for two decades. Once ol' Bob is dead the Holly Holstrom blacklisting will probably evaporate but the moratorium on fur coat prizes will likely remain given Bob's long known stance on animal rights. That said, there is really nothing preventing Buzzr from airing the syndicated TPIRs hosted by Dennis James, Doug Davidson or Tom Kennedy. It just hasn't happened yet.

Happy 75th Alex Trebek! But now onto some interesting clips. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1b09HYeGIKI Geeks Who Drink is probably more "Goon Jeopardy" than anything I've ever experienced. Questions like "Samus Aran is the main character of what Nintendo Video Game Series?" to "Channing Tatum was the voice of what superhero - Batman or Superman?" for the prizes of a lightsaber, $500 in fandango movie tickets and an xbox one. Not to mention all the that goes on during the show. It airs in 7 minutes, and I am pretty sure there is going to be Chuck getting so inebriated he forgets that the set he's on isn't actually a bar. here's a mini quiz of the sort of questions on the show

This show has the most tenuous premise I've ever seen. The host keeps telling people that they have to guess the 4/5/6/7 wrong answers, but, really, contestants only have to guess the one right answer and then cut all the other wires. He also tells them to talk through their answers when they only have like 30 seconds to cut all the wires. So loving dumb.

Boom is the exactly wrong type of schlocky quiz show. They somehow manage to take something inherently fast paced and slow it down way too much. Really, the best thing about the show is that it originally started in Isreal.

Digital subchannel Buzzr added a new block of programming called "Lost And Found" featuring footage of game shows long since aired, forgotten and/or game shows that never made it past the pilot episode. For example, the premiere of the block tonight featured an hour of the original black/white NBC era Match Game from 1962 (Episode 1) and then aired an hour of the CBS revival Match Game '73 (Episode 1). Both versions of the show didn't play it for laughs with the risque questions Match Game was most remembered for. The original CBS premiere of Match Game was leaning in that direction but not quite into the "Dumb Donald is so dumb..." questions yet. The answers the stars gave were sometimes bawdy though by 1973 standards. Tomorrow will feature Ray Combs' first episode hosting his run of Family Feud. It's kind of a neat block of programming if you are a game show junkie like myself and love the classics. The failed pilot game shows are also interesting just because of how badly the game was conceived or how it was played or any number of other reasons as to why it never saw the light of day. If you get Buzzr, the block airs weeknights at 8/7 Central.

It's premiere week of game shows, so that means a whole ton of Jeopardy and Wheel going on, well maybe just Jeopardy. But last night, American Ninja Warrior finally gave away it's top prize, as not one, but two people conquered all the courses... but only one could win the million dollar prize. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HSxPyOGCUo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aL57-jfV6QI And the new "Millionaire" has been pushed to late hours, with new host Chris Harrison, maybe it's the sign of it dying? And of course, Wheel has a minimum of $33,000 for it's 33rd season, so good news. Best Time Ever premieres tonight, but I'm not adding it to the list, only because roughly 1/5th of the show is a game show, just like Saturday Night Takeaway. But there is a format in the works, A revival of Treasure Hunt https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpH48ifhsAk Treasure Hunt is one of my all-time favorite game shows, because while it was a luck-based game show, what I enjoyed the most was the workaround of skits and sketches just to reveal a prize. So here is hoping there is a channel picking it up.

Thanks for the update, I was busy the last few months with work and productions stuff to announce the SUMMER FUN & GAMES on ABC. I was thinking about rather or not to include Celebrity Food Fight on the list of shows as it's just a knock-off Hollywood Game Night. Also, while it wasn't a game show, per se. Go90 did have last month a new reality series called "The Runner" that was part "Amazing Race" and part Hide-and-Go-Seek, hosted by MatPat of YouTube "Game Theory" fame, and Kaj Larsen of Vice... I recommend checking it out if you ever get the time. Oh gosh, I am SO ready to revisit Double Dare. Although it was Double Dare 2000 when I was watching it.

almost impossible game show was quite good -- it's a bit like wipeout without that jarring shift in tone that wipeout had, going from goofy they-fell-in-the-water humor to superserious competition in the wipeout zone. but AIGS only has a prize of $500 going to whoever can pass four events, so the minute a show starts trying to act all serious for such small potatoes it sucks all the humor out of it. in short, if you're going to do a physical-type game show, pick a tone and stick with it. go serious like american ninja warrior, or go silly like almost impossible game show, but be consistent, goddamn it.

also, it is a loving travesty that million dollar mind game got shuffled off to sunday afternoons against the nfl. a game with as clever material as it had deserved a better fate than that, with or without vernon kay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWQ5AROEQ7I&hd=1

CBS and the producer that brought us Wipeout and Fear Factor have greenlit a game based on the mobile game Candy Crush. I guess the Angry Birds game show fell through if it ever existed in the first place. https://deadline.com/2016/10/cbs-candy-crush-reality-series-mobile-game-lionsgate-matt-kunitz-1201838123/
