Hello and welcome all! The exciting Jupiler Pro League™ starts tomorrow and I’m hyped and stoked and hooting and hollering! And so are you!
Actually, Belgian football already started on July 16th with the Supercup. Last year’s league winner (AA Gent :smuggo:) took on last year’s cup winner (Club Brugge). Gent won that game 1-0 and that’s the first prize of the season taken care of!

Anyways, let’s take a look at the teams that are competing this year. I stole most of this from the OP of last year’s thread but who cares. It’s not like the OP from last year’s thread didn’t steal it.

Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht aka Sporting aka mauves et blancs/paarswit (purple and white)

What did these scrubs accomplish?

Nationwide: This team is basically the juggernaut of Belgian football, they've been League champion for a whopping 33 times. Their longest streak is five wins from 63-64 to 67-68. They haven't been relegated since 1935. They've won the Belgian Cup 9 times, their longest streak being four wins from 71-72 to 75-76. Anderlecht have won the Supercup 11 times, always as League champion.

Anderlecht are one of the three clubs who won the Belgian League Cup. They won the last edition in 2001. They've won two editions of the Bruges Matins, beating Club Brugge twice.

International: Anderlecht are the most successful Belgian team in Europe, winning:

-The European Cup Winners' Cup twice by beating West Ham United in 1976 and Austria Wien in 1978.
-The UEFA Cup by beating Benfica in 1983.
-The UEFA Supercup twice by beating Bayern Munchen in 1976 and Liverpool in 1978.

2014-15: Lost the final of the cup to Club Brugge. Came third in the league and miss the Champions League for the first time in a while. Bought Defour (ex-Standard) and there was a whole lot of outrage when the Standard ultra’s made a giant tifo depicting Defour’s decapitated head for the game Anderlecht-Standard. That’s about all I remember from their season. Oh yeah, they also just bought Ezekiel, and ex-Standard player.

Trainer: Besnik Hasi
Main JPL rivals: Club Brugge, Standard Liège
You've probably heard of: Anthony Vanden Borre, Mitrovic, Dennis Praet
Founded: 1908
Goaltune: Blur - Song 2

Sportvereniging Zulte Waregem aka Essevee

What did these scrubs accomplish?

Nationwide: They were Second Division champion in 2005, haven't left the Pro League since and won the Belgian Cup in 2006.

International: Waregem's biggest accomplishment in Europe was losing to Newcastle in the 3rd round of the UEFA cup.

2014-15: Lost a lot of their good players: De fouw, Conte, Kums and Hazard. Didn’t make POI and came 12th. Bought Mbaye Leye back and they expect him to carry the team back to midtable? Or preferably higher I guess.

Trainer: Francky Dury
Main JPL rivals: Kortrijk
You've probably heard of: Mbaye Leye, and Benteke’s younger brother Jonathan
Founded: 2001 (Fusion of KSV Waregem and Zultse VV)
Goaltune: Otto Knows - Million Voices

Club Brugge Koninklijke Voetbalvereniging aka blauw-zwart (blue and black) aka Club aka boeren (farmers)

What did these scrubs accomplish?

Nationwide: Club Brugge have become League champion 13 times, their longest streak being three wins from 75-76 to 77-78. They've won the Belgian Cup 10 times, their longest streak being 2 wins from 1994-95 to 95-96. Club have won the Supercup 13 times, 7 times as league champion and 6 times as cup winner, longest streak being four wins from 2002 to 2005. Club Brugge won the very first Supercup against SK Beveren in 1980. They've won the Bruges Matins 19 times (which isn't really an accomplishment when you're always in the finals since 1991) with a current seven win streak. A comeback against a feisty Wolfsburg kept the streak going. Didn’t organise the Bruges Matins this year because ‘our players would be too tired otherwise’.

International: Club Brugge have had mixed success outside of Belgium.

-Lost the 1976 UEFA Cup final and 1978 European Champion Clubs' Cup final, both against Liverpool.
-Won the 1981 Kirin Cup.

2014-15: Won the cup and were doing good in POI. Until they collapsed in the last couple of weeks. Came 2nd in the league, also known as the first loser. They blamed this on a ton of reasons, none having to do with them not being good enough. They also had a good EL-run. Got kicked out in the semi-final by Dnipro Diprovtesk or whatever, can’t be bothered to look up the name again.
Anyways, they predict that they will win the title this year (just like they did the last 11 year. Predicting that is, not winning.)
They also lost Matthew Ryan, their really really good keeper. Let’s see how his replacement, Sinan Bolat, does.

Trainer: Michel Preud'homme
Main JPL Rivals: AA Gent, Anderlecht, Cercle Brugge
You've probably heard of: Timmy Simons, Victor Vazquez, Meunier, Vanaken
Founded: 1891
Goaltune: Jordan & Baker - Explode

Royal Standard Club de Liège aka Les Rouches (The Reds)

What did these scrubs accomplish?

Nationwide: They've been Belgian League champion ten times now, their longest winning streak is three wins, from 68-69 to 70-71. Their last win was the 2008-2009 season. Standard has won the Supercup four times, once as cup winner and three times as league champion. Standard has won the Belgian Cup 6 times, the last time in 2011. They haven't been relegated since 1921.

International: Liège's biggest accomplishment in Europe was losing 2-1 to Barcelona in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup finals in 1982.

2014-15: Became 4th and were disappointed with that result. Duchatelet sold the club, Venanzi is the new owner. Guy Luzon also got sacked during the season and replaced with Ivan Vukomanovic, who got sacked and replaced by José Riga. Oh, and José Riga just got replaced by Slavoljub Muslin.

Trainer: Slavoljub Muslin
Main JPL rivals: Anderlecht, Charleroi
You've probably heard of: Legear, Santini
Founded: 1898
Goaltune: The Champions - We Are The Best, now to be played sarcastically.

Koninklijke Racing Club Genk

What did these scrubs accomplish?

They won the Belgian League three times and the Belgian Cup four times. They have won the Supercup once in 2011 as league champion. They've also won the Second Division once, the Final Round twice and haven't been relegated since 1996.

2014-15: Missed out POI and came first in POII. Fired almost all of their staff and a whole bunch of players. Switched trainers 3 times, just like Standard, now they settled with Peter Maes (ex-Lokeren).

Trainer: Peter Maes
Main JPL rivals: I don’t know, let’s say Westerlo?
You've probably heard of: Kara Mbodj, Igor De Camargo
Founded: 1988 (As fusion between THOR Waterschei and KFC Winterslag)
Goaltune: D'Europe & Dreuver - Racing Song

Koninklijke Sporting Club Lokeren Oost-Vlaanderen aka Tricolores aka Lokerse boeren (farmers of Lokeren)

What did these scrubs accomplish?

They won the Belgian Cup, their very first trophy, in 2011 and repeated this feat in 2014. They were also the Second Division champion in 1996 and haven't been relegated since.

2014-2015: Nothing special really. POII, eighth place. Lost their trainer Peter Maes and their little gold clump Hans Vanaken (although he didn’t play on the same level as previous season). Also lost a bunch of other players, bought a bunch of new ones. Could go either way with all those new guys.

Trainer: Bob Peeters
Main JPL rivals: AA Gent, Waasland-Beveren
You've probably heard of: Patosi, Maric
Founded: 1923
Goaltune: TC Matic - Oh La La La

Yellow Red Koninklijke Voetbalclub Mechelen aka The Yellow Reds aka Malinois aka Malinwa aka De Kakkers (The Shitters)

What did these scrubs accomplish?

Nationwide: Four time First Division winner, five time Second Division winner, two time Final Round winner, one time Third Division winner (after bankruptcy), one time Belgian Cup winner. They haven't been relegated since 2007.

International:
1988 European Cup Winners' Cup winner, beating Ajax with 1-0.
1988 European Supercup winner, beating PSV Eindhoven
1989 Joan Gamper Trophy winner, beating Sochaux

2014-15: Decent midtable finish. Don’t know what else to say really.

Trainer: Aleksandar Janković
Main JPL rivals: Lierse
You've probably heard of: Coosemans, Mats Rits, Veselinovic
Founded: 1904
Goaltune: None

Koninklijke Voetbalclub Kortrijk aka De Kerels (The Dudes)

What did these scrubs accomplish?

Won the Final Round three times and the Second Division twice, haven't been relegated since 2007.

2014-15: Lost their coach and almost the entire staff. Managed to get in POI and became fifth. Over all, decent season. A bit of commotion at the end of the season when Vanderhaeghe first said that he’d stay with the club, only to sign a contract at Oostende a week later. Oh, they also got bought by Vincent Tan.

Trainer: Johan Walem
Main JPL rivals: Zulte Waregem
You've probably heard of: Teddy Chevalier, De Smet, Keet
Founded: 1901
Goaltune: Tenpole Tudor - Wunderbar (who the gently caress knows)

Royale Sporting du Pays de Charleroi aka the Zebras

What did these scrubs accomplish?

They've been second division champions twice, the last time was in 2012

2014-15: Had a really nice season. They were probably one of my favourite clubs to watch. Don’t need to change this from last year. Became sixth.

Trainer: Felice Mazzu
Main JPL rivals: Standard Liège
You've probably heard of: Giuseppe Rossini, Olivier Renard
Founded: 1904
Goaltune: Cidinho & Doca - Rap Das Armas

Koninklijke Atletiek Associatie Gent aka The Buffalos

REIGNING CHAMPIONS

What did these scrubs accomplish?

Nationwide: AA Gent have been relegated a few times and are a four time Second Division champion, as well as Second Division Final Round Champion in 1989. After 1989, Gent haven't been relegated. Gent have won the Belgian cup three times and won the Supercup as cup winner in 1984.

International: AA Gent's biggest accomplishment in Europe is being a runner-up twice in the Intertoto Cup.

1)2006: Lost from Grasshopper-Club Zurich in the Central-East region
2)2007: Lost from Aalborg BK in the Northern Region

2014-15: They actually won the league for the first time in the club’s history! That’s right, they became first! Vanhaezebrouck managed to let all the players play very well together and make a real team out of them. There’s not really a player who stands out really.
Again, they became first. Awesome. Really really cool. They’ll play in the goup stage of the Champions League. Gent. In the Champions League. :getin:

Trainer: Hein Vanhaezebrouck
Main JPL rivals: NO ONE CAN TOUCH GENT
You've probably heard of: Raman, Depoitre, Milicevic, Kums, Sels, Gershon, Dejaegere, Matton, Moses Simon, Thomas Foket, Asare, Yaya Soumahoro, Kenny Saief, Lasse Nielsen etc etc
Founded: 1900
Goaltune: Kernkraft 400 - Zombie Nation

Koninklijke Voetbalclub Red Star Waasland-Sportkring Beveren aka de Wase Wolven (the Wolves of the Waasland)

What did these scrubs accomplish?

SK Beveren had a few titles and a supercup or two I'm pretty sure. Sadly this club has Waasland's honours and not Beveren's so apart from winning the Second Division final round in 2013 they've done gently caress all!!

2014-15: Were poo poo but then luckily for them some shittier sides showed up. This is also from last year’s OP, but still applied.

Trainer: Ronny Van Geneugden
Main JPL rivals: Lokeren
You've probably heard of: Jurgen Cavens, Colin Coosemans
Founded: 2010 (Fusion of Red Star Waasland and SK Beveren)
Goaltune: Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive

Koninklijke Voetbalclub Oostende aka de Kustboys (the Boys from the Coast)

KV Oostende are the closest team to you if you're from across the pond or across the bigger pond. If you want to look the least plastic this club is for you. They had a real good season in the second division, but are best known in this thread for maybe, maybe not, actually not, no, not being bought by Waregem chairman Decuyper.

2014-15: Decent midtable finish. Their billionaire owner Marc Coucke wants more, they brought in a new staff and new trainer. Vanderhaeghe from Kortrijk. Made some good other signings as well, so we’ll see how it goes. I think they might surprise everyone.

Trainer: Yves Vanderhaeghe
Main JPL rivals: I don’t know. Brugge?
You've probably heard of: Akpala, Cyriac, Berrier, Capon
Founded: 1981 (fusion of VG and AS Oostende)
Goaltune: TC Matic - Oh La La La

Royal Mouscron-Péruwelz aka whatever

What did these scrubs accomplish?

Not much! At one point during the 90s, they found themselves in the fourth provincial division. However, in the last few seasons Mouscron has shot up the ranks, going from fourth to third division in 2011, from third to second in 2012 and now finally to first division in 2014 after winning the second division final round.
2014-15: Holy gently caress they suck. Managed to not get relegated, but turns out their financial situation is awful. Cerlce and Lierse (who did get relegated) even started a lawsuit against them because they think Mouscroun-Pérulwez isn’t capable to play in the JPL. Mouscroun in turn filed a lawsuit against Lierse and Cercle and demanded money. I actually have no idea how this ended, but I’m pretty sure they’ll start in the JPL this season.

Trainer: Janevski
Founded: 1921 as Racing Club Péruwelz, fusion with Mouscron in 2010

KVC Westerlo aka Westel

What did these scrubs accomplish?

Played in the Pro League between 1997 and 2012, after which they spent two years in the second division. Never really achieved anything, aside from getting kicked out of Europe early twice, and will hopefully continue to do so.
2014-15: Started really good, lost their top scorer due to injuries and then fell back. Fired their coach after a dreadful period, Harm Van Veldhoven took over. Managed to keep them safe from relegation. Finished 12th.
Trainer: Harm Van Veldhoven
Founded: 1933

THE FRESH BLOOD:

Koninklijke Sint-Truidense Voetbalvereniging aka STVV
Champions of the second divison in Belgium. Back in the JPL since their relegation in 2012. Don’t really know anything about them really.

Trainer: Yannick Ferrera
Founded: 1924

Oud-Heverlee-Leuven aka OHL

Won the end-round against the winner of PO III. Yeah. It’s complicatd. Don’t know much about them either. We’ll see I guess?

Trainer: Jacky Matthijsen
Foundend: 2002 (after a fusion)

loving playoffs, how do they work?

They overhauled the system (again) and if I’m correct it works like this now. There are 16 clubs in first class, and 8 in second class.
- 1 to 6 play against each other in one group with their points halved, top spot becomes champion, fourth (or fifth) spot plays against the winner of:

- 7 to 14 play against each other in two groups starting from zero, top spots play against each other, winner goes against aforementioned fourth (or fifth)

- 15 and 16 go against each other to decide for immediate relegation, 16 starting from zero, 15 getting three points and the home advantage in three of the five matches. Winner goes to the Final Round, loser relegates.

I just copied this from Wikipedia: Structural changes:
Some changes were introduced in comparison to the previous season, with the most important one being the relegation rules. Instead of organising a relegation playoff between the teams finishing in the two last positions, this season will rather see the last team relegated immediately, while the 15th placed team will not play in any playoff and will remain in the Belgian Pro League.
Several other smaller changes were introduced, namely:
• The team finishing on top of the table following the regular season, will be assured at least place in the 2016–17 UEFA Europa League in case they drop out of the top two positions and thereby miss out on the 2016–17 UEFA Champions League. They will be awarded a spot in the 2016–17 UEFA Europa League Third qualifying round, or even the Group stage in case the 2015–16 Belgian Cup winners finish in the top two.
• In case two or more teams finish with equal points after the Championship Playoff, the first tiebreaker will now be the finishing position during the regular season.
• The disciplinary record (number of yellow cards) will now be erased for all players after conclusion of the regular season. Any suspensions already obtained will be kept. In addition, during the playoffs, players will now pick up a one match ban already after three yellow cards, rather than five as during the regular season.
The first two of these rules were put in force as a compensation for the rule that the points obtained during the regular season are halved prior to the start of the championship playoff, to the complaint of several teams that had been in the lead after the regular season the past few seasons. The third rule was put in force to avoid the effect of players intentionally taking yellow cards near the end of the regular season, to make sure they were suspended before the playoffs (mostly against lesser teams) and could start the deciding playoffs with a clean sheet.

Jupiler is a Belgian beer. It's brewed in the town Jupille, hence the name Jupiler. I'm pretty sure it's the most popular beer in Belgium. I certainly drink it all the time.

Aha. Interesting question :science:
For the answer, we have to go back to the start of the 20th century. In those days, Buffalo Bill toured the world with his western shows. One of those shows took place in Ghent. During those shows there was apparently a segment where they would let a herd of buffalo run around in the arena. This was very impressive and the spectators shouted 'buffalo buffalo' to encourage Buffalo Bill and his team. And because it's pretty exciting to shout things, they later started shouting 'buffalo buffalo' during the football games. That's where the team got it's nickname.
The logo is from the same show. They chose a Native American because that represents strength and wisdom etc.
Another fun fact about the logo, originally it was facing left. They switched it last year or the year before. Gave it a slightly more modern look and flipped it. Now it's facing right, looking at the future.

Actual JPL talk now, I was impressed by STVV. They showed some nice things. If they keep that up, they'll be a very good addition to class.

Anderlecht signed Stefano Okaka, who is coming off of his best season in Italy. I don't know how much of it was due to management or organization, but he seemed pretty good for half a season anyway. I think Italian teams weren't willing to take the risk because his price was relatively high.

I don't know much if anything about this league but I predict he will score at least a few goals. Best of luck to him.

Yeah, I read about this. I noticed he has had like 5 clubs in Seria A despite only being 25 years old or something. Does he have a bad character or is he just not good enough?
Also weird to see a 25 year old player move from Serie A to the JPL. Is our league getting better or is yours getting worse?

He's got a fine enough attitude, he's not like Balotelli or anything. What happened is that every team that outright owned him wasn't content to let him sit on their bench so he got loaned out all over the place, but was just never good enough to start for his parent team (Roma, so it's easy to see why).

I'm betting that Anderlecht gave Samp the best offer and he wants to play consistently. He wasn't starting by the end of the season and he's the kind of player that would strengthen Samp's near rivals.

As for the leagues, probably more to do with the player than that I think.

Hard as nails, he is.

Shame we lost the match, but I wasn't really expecting much of a result against Standard and we did pretty well all in all. Thiam looks promising, but I think I'd rather see him alternate with Leye, with Buyl taking his place on the wing. Buyl was pretty impressive there against Lokeren and our system really needs good, fast wingers to work. I can't imagine Leye, Thiam and Benteke being content to compete for a single spot, though. (and also Gimbert I guess) Wouldn't have subbed on Jørgensen for Thiam, personally.

I'm really surprised anyone outside of Belgium has things to do in Kortrijk or Zwevegem, but the answer to your question is fairly easy: Kortrijk has it's own team. It's somewhat the Belgium southampton: every year they sell a lot of players and/or their coach prompting pundits to predict they'll do badly, but somehow they keep overperforming and getting into the top 6 very often. They recently got bought by Vincent Tan though, so they're probably no longer among the very poorest of the JPL clubs.

Relax, I just copy pasted last years OP. And that was copied from the year before. So . Who reads it anyway?

If you want do write something else, just post it here and I'll edit it in.

I sort of agree about Panathinaikos and Man U. Wanted to post about it here but then I forgot. Congrats on winning, it was a good game. Man U will be tough, but I'm a bit jealous, because it's an awesome draw.

This is a terrible thread and a terrible OP.

Club's JPL rivals include Cercle and Gent? The first don't even play in the JPL and the second are a bunch of wannabe's we don't give a poo poo about. Come back when you grow up and stop mentioning us in every single goddamn interview anybody does.

Club Brugge is weak, puny, bad. I saw STVV clown on you guys all day it brought me intense joy.

I do beer stuff. Thanks for the info.

Wow, crazy ending in the Brugge-Kortrijk game. That Dierckx guy is quickly becoming a fan favourite I think.
