Don't you just hate when you wind up in a store with people who are in a socioeconomic class that is pretty obviously about two levels lower than your own?
there's an event at the Computer History Museum this weekend, with a bunch of Amiga luminaries including RJ Mical

I'm going, if only to laugh at creating an orange and blue and white interface with fixed-width text a year and a half after the Macintosh was released, and a year and a half before the Macintosh II showed the world how well the Mac interface would work on a big screen and with color

and also to see the Frankenstein's monster contraptions people have been putting together with FPGAs and such

the amiga didn't cost ten thousand dollars tho. a colour monitor that could do 512 visible lines progressive scan would have been really expensive + totally blown them out of the range anyone would spend on something that said commodore on it

I could've sworn the was an FPGA-based Amiga emulator built into a floppy drive (with SD card too, of course) that was being made and sold recently

can't find it for the life of me

maybe it was actually an Atari ST emulator

after all, it's pretty easy to mix up the unaesthetic also-ran platforms favored by cheap Europeans

it was successful in combining multiple resolutions on screen at once

not via interpolation or anything like that, literally showing multiple resolutions by switching frequencies between scan lines

those custom chips are p terrifying

i suppose if you're an american

in england what happened was that the people who actually had computers mostly had atari sts then amigas, they utterly dominated the market. there was still even an 8bit market but that was instead of games consoles

then from our perspective the american parent companies went bankrupt one day basically out of nowhere

retailers tried to fill the void with PCs and macs but those cost like 6 times the price so for non rich people computers basically stopped existing at home for like a decade

i had the great experience of growing up with amigas in america and my dad disliked microsoft so much that we didn't get a windows computer in the house until black friday 1999, which of course ran windows me
on the plus side I grew up with an amiga 500 in my bedroom and he got a huge box of hundreds of floppies of pirated amiga stuff at a yard sale so we were never short of games

i have him mostly trained and he's comfortable with xp and 7 now, but he's still a bit obsessed with the amiga days
