You start to swing your amulet like a pendulum and begin to hum softly. The heads of the snakes sway gently in time, like wheat in the summer breeze. Still humming the charm, you step onto the living carpet which writhes beneath your sole, while baleful hisses warn you not to linger. Garter snakes coil around your thighs but they are nestling there and do not bury their venom-tipped fangs in your soft flesh.

You step trancelike across the living carpet of snakes and through the far door, where you face another spiral staircase. Once outside the door the snake coils loosen and they glide to the floor out of sight.

Turn to 180.

Page 180 posted:

Various cabbalistic signs like ancient cave paintings have been daubed on the outside of the topmost door in terracotta and charcoal. If your hopes are not disappointed the Jewel of Sunset Fire lies inside this topmost room.

At the top of the staircase is a series of frescoes showing the tower and depicting the grisly fates that befall those who rashly try to climb it. To your absolute horror and consternation the final fresco is a picture of you, squashed flat beneath a gigantic bloated black spider. Above the spider you can see the orb shining brightly in its frame.

You walk on up a narrower spiral of stairs that lines the outer wall and at last pause before the final door. Gingerly you push it open, wincing at the creak of rusty hinges. There is a brooding presence of evil here. Your heart hammers in your chest as you step forward.

Turn to 150.

: This bodes quite poorly.

Page 150 posted:

The ceiling of the room is clear crystal. The dome of crystal that tops the tower is supported by huge iron struts from a black boss directly above the jewel. You look up as you start to cross the floor to the casket, just as a flash of lightning illuminates everything in stark outline. The angled struts are in face the legs of a giant spider whose eyes seem to follow your every move as you inch slowly beneath the arches of its legs.

The keening of the gargoyles reaches a new frenzied high and the crystal that protects you from the tower-spinning spider explodes into shards and dust. The wind falls away, the keening drops to a low moan and now you hear for the first time the wheezing sysurratioins [sic] of the spider's breath. You can see its thorax opening and closing like a bellows.

Will you dash beneath it to seize the jewel and casket (turn to 164), or attack it from the doorway (turn to 186)?

: ...where are the easily charmed snakes when you need them?

The other warriors close in around you and though you defend yourself ably with the Jade Warrior's sword you are no match for three magical bodyguards of the Megiddo dynasty vaults. You are slain and there is no one left who can save the Judain. Hate will conquer all.

Death: Thrice jaded

Its sword has a halo which glows more strongly than the others. You maneuver behind the Jade Warrior and throw yourself against its sword arm, wrenching the blade from its armored grasp.

There seems to be a mind inside the sword itself, prompting you to issue orders to the Jade Warriors. ‘Obey me!’ you cry out.

To your relief and amazement they line up before you and stand to attention. The warrior from whom you robbed the sword picks up another from behind an awning. The warriors are ready to do your bidding. They whirr and click as they follow you dutifully to the edge of the precincts of the burial chambers, and there they grind to a halt. There is nothing you can do to move them further. Although you cannot command the Jade Warriors to go forth and attack Hate, you tell them that they must attack Hate if it should loop its coils into the burial chambers of the Megiddo dynasty. You leave all the doors and traps wide open in the hope that Hate will blunder in and get carved up.

Sure enough, when you return the next day the place shows signs of an epic battle. Great gouts of translucent flesh hang from lintel and corners. There is a fine green powder in the air, like pulverized glass. The Jade Warriors have been ground to dust by Hate but, judging by the quantity of purple ichor smeared over the walls, they must have given the monster acute indigestion. Remember to note the Jade Warrior’s sword on your Adventure Sheet. You can also take one of the plumed helmets if you wish.

Soon you have released a multitude from the prison fortress. A mob of escaped convicts and their cruel guards start fighting outside the fortress walls. You leave them to it. They probably deserve each other. The city has sunk into a desperate state. You could almost imagine you were in hell.

A moment of inspiration lightens your mood, however, as you decide to have the massive chains which support the portcullis of the prison taken out. A sorcerer of ancient times forged these metal links.

Perhaps you can use them to tether Hate. Note the chains among your possessions and then turn to 45.

Page 45 posted:

You also manage to free two hundred of the grateful guards who cannot believe their luck. They wipe themselves off along the walls. Most of them look as if they are in shock. 'Now die, dogs, die slowly and in pain!' they cry. 'Let us see how you like to be put to the torture. Kill them! Heat the irons and warm their vitals.' The Judain are near hysterical and they begin to slaughter the guards out of hand, while others try to drag some of them back to the torture chamber. The guards are petrified.

Will you stop the slaughter by killing one of your fellow Judain? In the heat of the moment there is no time for finesse, and your people are behaving no better than savage beasts who have lost all control; turn to 269.

Character Sheet posted:

Jay 'The Hammer' Sherman the Nazirite

Skills: CHARMS, CUNNING, SWORDPLAY and WILDERNESS LORE

Life Points: 2/12

Gleenars: a large, meaningless number

Possessions: Amulet, sword x2, wand, elfin boots (x1 use of AGILITY), incense censer, throwing daggers, healing salve (restore all Life Points), evidently a dagger (?), one slightly used crossbow bolt, sack full of slime and vomit-soaked sawdust, sucking chest wound, a broken-off spear shaft, a severe case of time-sickness, a gargoyle-shriek migraine, The Jewel of Sunset Fire, Jade Warrior's Sword, plumed helm, some chains that are ensorceled or something

Codewords: Satori, Codex, Hecatomb

Kills: Embracer, a guard, an Infernal Machine and the tiny man inside it, a pointy-toothed native, Ejada, the Moon Dog, Skarvench, our credibility as a tactician, any chance of furthering whatever the gently caress kind of relationship we had with Lucie, some unlucky guard, an enormous ceiling spider, a particularly punitive yet otherwise non-descript Judain

Failures: Root'd to death, despair!'d, swallowed and digested by a Colossus beetle, ate a pig and failed to avert an ecological cataclysm, slave'd and toil'd to death, pulmonary arrownation, stabbed in the eyes and left to "live" off the land, lightly dragon'd, tree'd from a great height x2, Countless Swords of the Westermen'd, gale'd, yardam'd, rack'd, pulp'd, flatten'd, eat'd (nobley), rubble'd, cul-de-sac'd, what-once-used-to-be-the-harbor'd, three magical bodyguards'd
