Does difficulty affect anything beyond some weapon drops and enemy damage? Like, if I want to spend a playthrough farming styles and non-Hard weapons, is there a reason to do it on Normal rather than Easy? It doesn't affect smithing improvements or item stats, right?

It affects smithing to some degree too. I've extracted other metals that are not just scrap metal by playing on hard, even from weapons that I picked up from Easy or Normal.

I just can't seem to beat Dojima for some reason. Am I using the wrong style? lovely weapons? (All of my weapons are only 5 damage) Iv'e tried fighting him at the hospital and also tried beating sense into him at the graveyard for the good ending, but either way he just wrecks me.

I can get him down to around a half or one third of his vitality in the graveyard fight, but when I do around 3-4 katana and lance thieves join the fight and begin pummeling me mercilessly to keep me down while Dojima whacks me in the face with his sword. I think it's because I somehow threw the city into chaos by stealing a pair of pants.

Thanks, good to know. I was more concerned if refining/reforging had better stat returns on higher settings, for when I get around to making my 'final' sword. Sounds like I'll just stick with Easy until I create my own styles.

Maybe they stack if they're on both swords, but both swords do need to have the charm on them for it to function.

This is the case afaik. They stack so if you have like a K shape on one sword you can get 3x the effect of a charm, but if you have two swords you need the thing on both of them to get ANY effect, which I would then give you the 2x effect.

The smith can add strength (damage) to your weapon: pick Refine, your sword, and finally Make Stronger.

Man, this game seems so simple on the surface. But once you play it a bit, it seems way more complex. Thanks for the info. Maybe I should've bought that instead of spending it all on useless garbage to make myself look cool :saddowns:

I feel there is much more to having a great sword than strength, though. Then again this also seems like it borrows from the Dead Rising school of gameplay. Your first playthrough is basically tooling around and getting wrecked and you do a little better each subsequent playthrough

Leveling up your style helps you a lot too. It's not too noticeable, but you do get stronger the further you are into your style. At the very least, you are able to launch enemies into the air at a higher level with a basic move while you can't at lower levels. I recommend making your sword stronger though, or if you're feeling confident and have the dlc, doing the Shinsengumi sidequest and getting their sword, since it always defaults to 250 STR even on easy. Course, I don't recommend doing that sidequest outside of easy unless you have a really good style and sword, because they hit really hard.

What's with the eh... bretonnian dance, sir?

Sadaha style with Akagi's sword (Or a custom using Asura/whatever's blade) though, that's the good poo poo just because the type of moves it has, combined with just how long that sword is makes things real silly when it's strong and durable enough.

I'm addicted to Iai stance, even if it is anime as hell.

One more question: What's the fastest way to level styles? Just pick those 75 Yakuza/Magistrate kill quests?

Pretty much, or bring a bunch of money to the casino, buy chips and then cash in.

Hey, can anyone confirm that the Demonscale dude you fight in the Prajna tournament if you kill Melinda can drop Harmonious Swordfighting?

I've been reloading and killing him for a little while and not getting anything. I'd like to be able to get it from him rather than having to run through Amihama Eight again.

The best unarmed style I've found so far is Gachinko, because it has a functional Daniel-san crane kick. Not sure how much else can compete.

I got mine through Amihama Eight unfortunately so can't confirm. I got Kantetsu off the the Demonscale commander in the tournament though. Supposedly, you can get it off the dojo challengers when you have a 5 star dojo with at least one dude.

I just got it off the commander, thankfully. He was alternating between Kantetsu and Dual Manifest and the first time I noticed him doing moves I hadn't seen from him before he dropped it.

My main issue with the shinobi style I have is that it a) Eats through vitality like butter, even with a vitality enhancing meal and b) My strong attack does a really long windup, rather useless smoke bomb move with seemingly any input other then exactly the right one for the move I really wanted.

I've reverteed back to Iai, partially because its so dang effective and I can't afford being underpowered on Hard.

With a properly upgraded Jacqueline, the russian roulette move is the most thrilling thing in the game. I'm not even a gambling man but the risk involved in "either your enemy dies or you do" makes it impossible not to be at least a little nervous.

Not very. The Shinsengumi and Where are They Now dlcs give you a few interesting fights and unique swords with an absurd starting strength, but they're not essential. Fully upgraded, all swords have the same strength and durability caps anyway.

Most of the other DLC is just a way to buy the Hard-difficulty versions of weapons from story characters rather than having to play through and murder them for them.

So today I found out that apparently the intended way of getting the extraction or spring harvest boosting sword titles is to have your sword stolen by katana thieves (by saving and quitting after dieing). If it meets the requirements for a spring harvest title it'll just have a chance of having it when you steal it back.

You'd think someone would figure that out instead of everyone assuming that they're bugged for years.

Probably because theres no obvious reason why you would ever quit instead of retrying.

I finally beat the game my first time. I accidentally locked myself out of the Amihama 8 quest so time to restart.

Anyway one thing I have to say really annoys me about this game is the falling/knockdown mechanics. Mostly because it doesn't seem to affect the enemies at all but it's really easy for them to chain knock you down or for you to just constantly stumble over huge hitboxes on corpses. Then it takes ages to get back up all while they're free to hit you.

If you jump as soon as you hit the ground you'll instantly recover a lot of the time. It doesn't work if you trip I believe. There's also away to go from the ground to standing with a sword attack, but it escapes me at the moment.

I'd also like to mention that the umbrellas are kind of glitchy and hilariously view obscuring. I draw my sword and the one on the sword hand explodes into like triple size, obscuring everything. It makes it super hard to see what I'm hitting with. I think I just turned Easy into a new difficulty.
