The whole ending stinger is clearly online players dropping into your game a la Dark Souls

Also cursory knowledge about the history of the Italian Mafia in the US would've told them that in the 60s and 70s (i.e. during and right after the Civil Rights movement, when the game apparently takes place) it was a thing that in many major cities the Italians started losing control of poo poo like the drug trade to politically empowered and newly-organized African Americans, which actually sounds like a really cool history to explore in a videogame!!! Which, incidentally, looks like a cool one in this case
