What the gently caress does this even mean? Did he get friends to bust into his room dressed like cops or something?

So you play as a black? But why is it even called Mafia then? It's hardly the bloody Cosa Nostra....

HOLD THE gently caress UP
Black people aren't allowed in the mafia, so why the gently caress is this game called mafia? It should really be called "Louisiana street thugs"

Really disappointing, but what did I expect from developers based in California? Haha, they even pulled out the "strong independent black woman" card too, holy poo poo. I bet the black girl is also a lesbian. You've just poo poo all over a very interesting part of America (The Italian Mafia), are you happy now, SJWs?

Also cursory knowledge about the history of the Italian Mafia in the US would've told them that in the 60s and 70s (i.e. during and right after the Civil Rights movement, when the game apparently takes place) it was a thing that in many major cities the Italians started losing control of poo poo like the drug trade to politically empowered and newly-organized African Americans, which actually sounds like a really cool history to explore in a videogame!!!

Which, incidentally, looks like a cool one in this case

It looks more like WoD rejuvenated interest briefly then people went back to business as usual, which is a steady decline in subs since Cataclysm because the game is old, subscription MMOs are declining, and FF14 is actually okay now and a competitor

The last two WoW xpacs both lampshaded the notion that nothing the players do matters and they'll just keep fighting the same battles against the same foes over and over again. WoW is settling into its stagnating, core population retirement phase, a thing that happens to every single MMO, it's just done so on a longer timeline and from a larger peak success than any other game in the genre.

They'll still be releasing xpacs 10 years from now that the rest of us won't even talk about. This isn't a catastrophic meltdown, it's an inevitable conclusion.

Fun fact: Everquest released its 21st expansion pack last October.

What can there be left to add after 21 expansions?

Level cap increase to 105.
Eight new zones, including Thuliasaur Island and Combine Dredge.
Mount Key Ring - Easier access to all obtained mounts from a single interface.
New missions and quests, including six new Heroic Adventures and seven new raids.
New tradeskills, spells, AAs, and items.

they added mounts to the game in 2001; apparently it only took 13 years to develop a single easy access interface for selecting them

And ya whatever phenomenon you're talking about with charisma trumping morality, whether or not it's a bad thing, is in no way exclusive or unique to games and gamers. Think about how massively popular characters like Darth Vader, The Joker, and Hannibal Lecter are. The Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th movie franchises basically made Freddy and Jason the protagonists after 2 or 3 movies because they were more interesting and fun characters than any of their interchangeable teenage victims.

ME2 is like the best modern example of a game improving rather than diminishing a franchise by cutting off the fat (in this case a ton of boring redundant bullshit equipment, skills, and barren planets that only existed to make the game appear more like a traditional CRPG)

Legacy of the Wizard and Monster Party own, tho

I feel like the 8 Eyes game was like that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde game, where it barely even resembles a game and it's clear the people making it hadn't even figured out what were, like, satisfying controls yet (despite only having 4 buttons counting Start and Select)

That analogy is weird because Morrowind is a way better game than Daggerfall by pretty much any metric other than world size (which is meaningless in Daggerfall's case because it's randomly generated, totally flat, and mostly empty)

i mean idol stuff is legitimately kind of sketchy, although like everything to do with japan people's reaction can be way far out of proportion to it, it's just the dumb nerds slowly realizing that their favorite video games are actually anime games *gasp* and freaking the gently caress out that's so funny. it's like you told someone the bread they make sandwiches for lunch with has actually been made of ground up cockroaches for years

That analogy only really makes sense if the bread actually was made of ground-up cockroaches though, because Japanese games definitely put stuff like idols in things where it makes no sense to us and is weird

Like your point about overreactions makes sense but is in no way exclusive to the way geeks react to anime or Japanese things, nerds having hilariously overblown positive and negative reactions to nuances of media (from all countries) is such a thing that everybody from The Simpsons to the AVGN has been joking about it for decades at this point

OoE was good and mechanically interesting and I would've liked to see them iterate on it. I even think Lords of Shadow was a good attempt at what it was actually doing, just that what it was doing (cloning God of War) was a poor and baffling decision for the Castlevania franchise.

Yeah the thing about Notch money, even moreso than just having a couple million bucks or w/e, is that you can literally just make up a new purpose. You can start any kind of business you want and keep it afloat forever, go to college anywhere on the planet and get a PhD in anything you want to study, move to and buy a house in any country on Earth, buy a theater or a gallery or a museum and renovate it out of pocket and pay top dollar to fill it with awesome stuff, etc.

"You run out of reasons to keep trying" only makes sense if the only reason you ever did anything to start with was to make money, and if that's the case he had those brain problems before Minecraft existed.

I think the whole of the kind of people that spend time posting on the Internet is an echo chamber. I find it better if I want to get out of 'an echo chamber' is to go talk to some gamers in real life and get away from Reddit and Twitter. My peers around my age with families, jobs, etc. A lot of SJW types seem to be scary derelicts, addicts and failures judging by history I've seen on some of them.

That's not unique to "SJW types". A lot of people who spend a lot of time on the Internet *are* scary derelicts, addicts, and weirdos, whether they're SJW types or neo-fascist /pol types. "Failures" is also a pretty subjective judgment. Since we were talking about Notch itt, you might consider him an incredible, unprecedented success - the most successful game designer of all time, financially speaking - or a huge failure because he's a goony weirdo who gets the majority of his human comfort from pornography and acts like he may as well just lay in bed for the rest of his life despite having something like 1.5 billion USD, enough money to literally do or try or make anything he wants.

Everybody's biased, and you can't change that, so the best you can do is try to remain aware of what your biases are and how they inform your decisions and the way you treat people. The best way to do that is to talk to others, and also to know when to shut up and listen.
