GOTTA STAY FAI posted:She's a g Who got death and rape threats when they removed NSFW content from comments. I used to go on imgur, for those 10 minutes of morning nonsense, but the reddit-like racism/sexism and the inside joke crap began to outweigh the interesting/cute stuff.

Fashionable Jorts posted:Did you see the people at that camp? They are all in their mid-twenties. They have no excuse to act the way they do. It's not like making fun of the kids on Tumblr since they are actual children, these are grown rear end adults who are this awful. That's precisely the issue. It's not a kid on Facebook or Tumblr or something saying dumb poo poo they'll grow out of in 3 years, it's basically reddit-lite, the majority being young adults (18-25 or so), people who should know better.

DudeGoofyGuy posted:I thought "bunchofwordsjammedtogether.jpg" was for memes, like "thatsthejoke.jpg". I have never heard of "kindawannadate.jpg". Is ".jpg" now just an "ironic" ending people use to distance themselves from emotions they are nervous or conflicted about, the way awkward people would text like "we should hang out sometime. JK. I mean, unless you want to..." It used to be a bit of a thing in 4chan greentexts, like ">see picture of couple holding hands >whyboner.jpg", with some others playing on the joke (">be patrician >see plebeian in the forum >disgust.vasepainting" or somesuch).

Fathis Munk posted:No, that would be way less sad. It's people cataloguing stuff bad authors made up for their lovely licensed star wars book and treating it as if it was a firm part of the star wars universe and irrefutably true. And probably getting in slapfights over it. I love some of the background bits on Wookiepedia, stuff about industries and the like, but I can't imagine ever getting into a pissfight about it. I can imagine people doing that though. That might be why I like TFwiki a lot, it takes itself much less seriously in terms of tone, while still mentioning the actual information. Your Computer posted:It's misused and a meme because people take great offense to trigger warnings and make fun of it (ironically), not the other way around. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but I don't see why you'd put the blame on "SJWs" for putting trigger warnings on things and not the assholes who don't take you seriously. This is pretty much it. The "social justice idiots" bit is basically a gross (in terms of size) exaggeration from some people who are at worst just misguided teens. Is it based on a 'real' thing? Sure, there are some folks who are a bit overzealous, or overly sensitive, etc. But they're like comparing all Americans to, I don't know, a very small, but not representative, sample of "bad" Americans. And then you have people who respond to a simple "Hey, could you tag this pic of that character in lingerie as nsfw? Thanks in advance" with "No gently caress you, get a better job". Not specifically a trigger, but it's not very dissimilar to other examples, only instead of nudity it's something else.

DudeGoofyGuy posted:I'm seeing it used more and more among young black men, usually semi-ironically but always in a dismissive way. I wonder if imgur kids think it's cool because of that, since they have a strange relationship with black dialects. Not sure how old that usage is, but 4chan-types using 'female' has been around for a few years now, generally more 'insulting' than dismissive. Then again Imgur also looks up to 4chan types so who knows.
