when it's obvious something is wrong with them? lethargy, rejecting food, obvious swelling, carrying a limb or limping? i know my two dogs general behaviour so basically if they're not acting as they normally would, I'd monitor it for 24-48 hours and if they are the same or worse, I'd take them straight to a vet.
