Fair point. I should make it clear, I'm not here to defend MS or Windows 10 (and I don't speak for MIcrosoft, nor ever will.) As to the snark, I will concede that it sure can look that way -- and that probably is because it's pretty difficult to take anyone comparing Windows 10 to the Third Reich seriously without mocking how crazy it is. If people want to delve in that, hey more power to them.

I think I've been pretty clear that I'm just a privacy conscious as the next person, and really as for default settings for 10, about the only thing I disagree with is the Ad ID setting. The rest, in my opinion, is really a non issue. Especially as most of those settings and functionality have been there for years now.

Sometimes it's not as black and white as that. In this instance you can read this for details. Basically Chrome was doing stuff to prevent people from hooking into Chrome's processes which ended up not working after some things they assume to be true changed.

Settings -> Personalization -> Colors -> Show color on Start, taskbar, and action center.

Unfocused window will be grey, focused will be accent. Some bad windows will not honor this still.

"System" process growing in ram is 99% likely to be the compressed store which is normal. If it was using a bunch but the system was sluggish you might have really been out of all mappable ram (page file, compressed store, and physical) at which point things get really message as the system juggles what to do. The latter I've had happen when something was running away in a Firefox process (something flash related in the plugin container I think) which chewed up ram. The VMM then compressed what it could but it started to choke from ram starvation over time (until I killed the plugin container and everything magic zipped to normal).

This can be a pretty common event. Basically what happens is you have a stable base (Win8.1). You branch and start Win10. You start the insider builds -- at this point it's mostly Win8 renamed Win10 and some minor bits and pieces changed. Some prototype stuff gets merged in to get the feedback/testing loop going - it's mostly stable. Real long term code/refactoring gets done with massive amounts of churn. Features merge into the top level branches. Things are less stable as these new features/refactoring come in as there are bugs. Bugs then get fixes and quality goes back up over time.

Note I'm not saying it's acceptable to have bad bugs, just that this type of cycle is very common. Believe it or not, what you're seeing right now with Windows 10 (stable, broken, really broken, broken, stable) is the exact same thing that happened with every Windows release that I can remember. It's just that most people didn't see this because there was no insider program. Even more so, many of you still won't see some of the really egregiously broken things as we stop them at our first internal fast ring (and believe me there have been some doozies on that one.)

However, it didn't do a straight clone -- it actually ended up shrinking the reserve partition which then caused Windows 10 updates to fail. I had to get another tool to resize the partitions to get it all sorted out. Everything else on the windows partition worked fine.

Nothing stands out

Expand the middle pane in the disk tab, sort by bytes there and then response time. What about the bottom pane (storage)? Does it show high activity time% / queue load for the drive you're having issues with ?

The fact that resource monitor shows little to no disk time and taskman shows 99% is odd. Did you sort decending on disk for taskmanager?

Many years ago when I was working at a dial-up ISP, we had a free install service where some poor shmuck (me) would drive out to a customers place and install the dial-up software for them.

I did an install one time where I went to some business that a lady ran. I installed the software, shower here what to click on to connect etc. Later that day we got a support call asking where her files for he business were. You see, she stored all her "completed business files" for the last two years in the recycle bin. That way she could reuse them if she needed (because recycling was good). Of course she blamed us and configuring of the dial up network.

She was very mad.

Point being yeah downloads isn't the place to store things you want to keep. Move them to a new folder and if you want assign it as a library location for videos.

yeah the tiles broken. uwp does a lot of things right and a lot of things dumb. in this case it's nothing to do with uwp though.

i looked up the bug and it has to do with .net where passing IEnumerable<System.Uri> would result in an exception which of course was unhandled. fixed merged into main today. should be in build 18326 or later (or whenever if they update the app via the store I guess?)

Did you already do the SFC cycle just to make sure nothing is hosed (sfc /scannow)?

Can you explain where it exactly it fails? Is it like from the windows update panel, you click download and it does the download and the pre install and fails with the error code there? Or does the reboot start and the install fails at the blue update screen?

If it gets to the install step, do you have the setup logs? (check c:\$windows.bt\sources\panther\setuperr.log [or whatever your os drive letter is])

Are you a windows insider? Could also help to capture advanced diagnostics (feedback hub->advanced diag->default diag/install and update/windows update/windows update (default)->start capture. Then submit a feedback report and link the details here so I can try and ping someone internally for a hint to get you unstuck.

Dunno really. Set it to the highest setting in the account profile and it took all my bandwidth (16mb) playing stuff. I don't see how I can say "play only 1080p" from the settings.
