Any idea how to get start menu search back reliably? I'm used to either clicking the start button and then typing, or pressing the windows key and then typing, but this only sometimes works now, the rest of the time it just seems to ignore the keypresses.

E: For now, fixed it by installing StartIsBack++

Are there any universal Windows apps, or instant messenger applications, that support Facebook Chat properly? I've tried a bunch but they're either missing features (emoticons or stickers etc.) or just don't work properly.

Closest I've got is Pidgin with this plugin which emulates the Android client, but not sure about emoticons or stickers as I don't really use them.

If you're like me and prefer a vertical taskbar, but want it really narrow, 7+ Taskbar Tweaker is now out of alpha and can be downloaded without being forced to donate.

Also the latest WinAero Tweaker lets you enable the Aero Lite theme which has coloured titlebars without the bugginess of the other method.

Now if I can just find a way to move the start button to the bottom of the taskbar and things will be perfect.

I have found out how to add the recycle bin to the quick access panel in explorer. This is great for people who prefer to hide desktop icons.

Download ThisPC Tweaker. Choose the option to add a shell location, and add the recycle bin there. It'll now show up in ThisPC alongside C:\ etc.
Then you can drag it onto the quick access bar (but can't right click and pin), and optionally remove it from ThisPC using ThisPC Tweaker again. It functions like a proper recycle bin, with the correct context menu, and ability to drag things into it.

7+ Taskbar Tweaker is now out of beta for Win10, for all those who like narrow vertical taskbars. He also has some utility out that changes how Win10 calculates colours, to give you brighter colours on the taskbar etc. though I have not tried it.

And for the most part I just wanted rid of the awful bright white that everything is, so aero lite theme (which is signed by MS, just disabled by default) and glass8 it is. I actually like the new start menu and am only running StartIsBack because win+start typing program name fails about 50% of the time and just ignores your keystrokes. Once that's fixed I'll go back to the new menu.

Yeah I have like 4 UI hacks running, but so far they're all stable. (7tt, tclock, startisback & glass8)

Also, thank gently caress the new command prompt finally has cut+paste that works in a sensible manner.

If it's 7zip, you need to run 7zip file manager manually as admin, then change the option as 7zip doesn't bother to elevate when you try to change this.

The post above pretty much answered the security side. There's also things like metered connections and ads choking up low powered mobile devices which is definitely a thing for some Win10 devices.

Maybe not, but it's an easy way to make using a Windows machine an utter nightmare over a long enough timeframe.

They're doing that because Windows licenses cost less on 2 GB machines. I suspect that loophole was made to drive manufacturers to make more Windows 10 tablets, but Microsoft hosed up by allowing for it.

Guess I'll go for the 4GB TB200 then, shame I can only find that with 32GB storage, but I'll just nuke the recovery partition when I get it. :)

This isn't for me, GF really really wants a touchscreen despite me telling her it's a bad idea when the budget is around £300 ish. (Insurance payout for breaking her old Acer Aspire 5732Z). Personally I think she should drop the touchscreen requirement and just get a bloody laptop. I have a bit more cash to spend on mine, since the one I claimed on was worth more to begin with, so am looking at a Clevo N150SD with an M.2 SSD and a single 8gb stick of RAM in there.

Why? MS make most of their Windows money from OEM licences and Software Assurance. If they just made it free they'd have no money coming in for Windows at all.

Basically they're relying on the fact that PCs break and need to be replaced, hence the push for per-device licenses, and trying to get rid of all those transferable retail box copies.

It does the check and asks for more disk space to be provided right at the start, then the usual choice between upgrade and clean install then walk away and come back a few hours later.

I did have a few issues after doing a clean install. Windows Update provided a broken camera driver and no-version of the drivers on Acer's website would work with it. Most people on the Transformer forums are running 32bit and they found an Acer driver that did work, but my GF's machine is a 4gb 64bit one. I ended up having to install the BayTrail platform drivers for a Lenovo Thinkpad 8 (or something like that) to get the bloody thing working.

That said when it was an upgrade install the camera and everything worked fine afterwards. I just had to be an awkward sod and flatten and reinstall didn't I? (Well who wouldn't when it's a brand new machine)

As an aside the "Grab and drag" extension for Firefox makes it pretty good for touchscreen use. Now I just need to find a way to make Steam play nice with a touchscreen, and certain games that have weird mouse handling.
