Anyone else having issues upgrading your "care" levels in order to accommodate installing a new Windows OS on an aging "gaming rig" you have lying around? I find mine are pretty low and I don't really feel like doing it.

I say if you rely on the machine in order to make a living, I would hold off until Windows 10 is really completely out of beta and a few patches come through. You aren't missing out on anything big, unless you consider being a Microsoft Honorary QA Team Member a big deal.

Idk it just sounds confusing. If it's free updates forever then just make the thing free and be done with it.

Or at least just loosen up activation restrictions in order to get more people on the platform forever.

Why? MS make most of their Windows money from OEM licences and Software Assurance. If they just made it free they'd have no money coming in for Windows at all.

Basically they're relying on the fact that PCs break and need to be replaced, hence the push for per-device licenses, and trying to get rid of all those transferable retail box copies.

Yeah maybe free's too far? but I don't know it just seems complicated

Thanks guys. I ended up just using an old Win7 Pro x64 ISO I had archived from MSDN during my Uni days, which accepted my key just fine. Strange, since the MS website said it was OEM (and it came with the laptop as a COA) but who cares, really.

Currently leaving it to install some 200+ updates, just so I can download Win10 for the third time and retry an upgrade yet again -- and then rewipe it to start afresh with Win10. Definitely the most frustrating thing I've ever had to do on a PC (and I'm a career embedded software developer, who has serviced family WinME machines).

Next time I'll just give up on the win license and go Debian.

There's not a Windows fix for "Start menu randomly ceasing function until reboot" because it's not a Windows thing.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/get-help-windows-start-menu

Well I mean it is a problem MS admits exists, but I was just hoping there was something simple I could run to get the start menu going without rebooting. My only Windows machine is running on an older, slower laptop HDD and while Win 10 does start up pretty quickly, it's still a pain in my rear end to reboot it.

No OEM software, it's an upgrade install but there's no way in hell I'm diving through clean installs, licensing and other bullshit. I've got things to do.

Hopefully it'll be fixed when Windows 10 is out of beta at least.

July 29th: No "It's Over" announcement from Microsoft. Upgrades work.
July 30th: No "It's Continuing" announcement from Microsoft. Upgrades still working.
Month of August: No clear communication from Microsoft. One exec says something non-committal and slightly confusing on Twitter. Upgrades still working.
Sometime in September: Microsoft makes a new page on their site outlining whether or not a device can still qualify for the free upgrade. It's confusing, but no one cares, since upgrades are still working across the board.
Sometime in November: Upgrades stop working. Mass hysteria. Microsoft directs everyone to the page on the site that outlines qualifications, which is still not one bit clearer than it was two months ago.
