Mordecai Sanchez posted:Quick question. My girlfriend needs a new laptop but we're trying to stay away from Windows 8. If we buy one with Windows 8 installed, are we still eligible for the free upgrade or is that only for users of 7/8 prior to the release date of 10? I'm guessing the former, I just wanna make sure. If you have 7 or 8 and it is before July 29 2016, you can get 10.

That's what I was talking about. If he has Pro, he can install 64 bit and use his key.

Now to just get it to actually search my installed programs so I can launch them like in 7.

Is there a way to get 7 to stop trying to download 10? I already have 10 on another drive and every time I go to do windows update, it says it is downloading Windows 10. The option Windows 10 update is unchecked and hidden, I just want my normal security updates.

Ah, I didn't know there was a second one. I uninstalled 3035583 but didn't know about the other. I'll check that out when I get home. Thanks.

You can just install 7 with the new hardware, do the upgrade to 10 and then fresh install with a 10 ISO. It might take longer but you get a clean 10 install.

Mine does the same thing. It won't find my programs. I was going to do something mentioned earlier but someone said it deletes all the folders in the start menu.

Just make an ISO and use something like this to make a bootable USB. The "make a flash drive" thing never worked for me.

Nvidia Optimus was the bane of my existence on my netbook. I don't know if it works in linux or whatever. I could never get an nvidia driver to install. I just use it as a media server now. Whoever thought up Optimus should be shot.

Maybe you have some sort of hardware problem. I've never hard of that issue before and I'm constantly on youtube with chrome.

Grub still works it just doesn't load into windows 10? Just load into linux and install grub customizer. It scans your drives and builds a new grub configuration.

Obviously it's adjusting to a non-existent new resolution, but this never happened in 8.1. ATi 290X and one of those cheap as chips korean 27" monitors connected via DVI, if that's any help. When you have no monitors connected, it switches to 1024x768 for some reason.

Windows 10 sometimes sends background info back to Microsoft for whatever reason. In order to be more efficient, it sends this info back when it normally sends search info. If you turn the search info being sent back off, it still sends the background stuff when you do searches. It's not that scary.

I used to have the same problem with chrome. The only option was to entirely turn off the protection or not run that thing until they finally added in an option to actually download the file.

Does 390MB really matter? You can use a linux live USB to attempt to move those partitions around. Safety not guaranteed, but I've done it before with no ill effects.

Build a new PC, install windows 7/8.1, upgrade that to 10 and then you can do a clean 10 install. Before July 29 2016 of course.

Why don't people just use hangouts? I go to work, log in to Gmail and there's hangouts. I get in my car and unlock my phone, there's hangouts. Then I'm at home and every device has hangouts. I only use pidgin for getting to IRC these days. I didn't even realize trillian still existed since I stopped using AIM/MSN/whatever years ago.
