Is there any advantage to building a deep trench over building a wall? It seems like it would have more or less the same drawbacks (you could go over it with the right tools) but it'd be a lot cheaper and easier to "build".

Assuming you made the trench as wide as you made the wall tall basically anything that let you go over the trench would also let you scale the wall. Not like someone couldnt just head over to the wall with a ladder.
