And what should one do to be remembered?

Phlegmish posted:

I saw Maduro speak on Telesur once, it was of course a confrontational diatribe about fighting imperialism and the enemies within, setting price controls, five-year plans, etc. Most it seemed to be classic Marxist-Leninist rhetoric lifted straight from the Cold War era without an ounce of self-awareness. I am amazed that Venezuelans ever voted for this clown in the first place.

And then he goes and speaks wonders about Russia Today in an interview with them, saying they were as powerful as a full nuclear arsenal in the fight against imperialism.

The news site whose namesake is currently annexing half of a neighbour. :allears: I absolutely love dumb people stuck in the Cold War.

Someone made three amazingly good effort posts about fascism a few months ago on the military history thread: long story short, it's really hard to define fascism in such a way as to allow the term to be used outside of the mid 1900s without making it too broad/useless. Fascism is funny because very few fascists have bothered to write about it, while a lot of anti-fascists have done so, but are biased due to their experiences so the exact boundaries of the idea get muddled (you have a Polish writer, I think marxist, define both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union as fascists, for example).

It is definitely interesting because of how misused the term is, same as people labelling as 'nazis' any kind of racist / far right anti-minority entities or individuals.

I will try to find them when I get home.

It also doesn't help that nowadays the "far left" governments align themselves with some of the most lovely human beings out there: Putin, Al-Asad, Kim Jong Un, al-Gadaffi to name a few. I still remember, uh, either Venezuela or Bolivia (I think it was Bolivia) believed the (fake) rumor of Mandela's death like years before his actual death. Their way to commemorate him? He got put in some kind of "wall of lamentations", up there with such individuals as Castro, al-Gaddafi and Chavez. :allears:

I will never get tired of listening to people who insist Chavez's cancer was the US' fault. "They might have messed with radiowaves" said the same teacher that told me Pearl Harbor was an inside job to make Japan look bad.

Remember -- this is the way communists think your grandmother ought to live. If you disagree you are a racist who should be imprisoned.

I have absolutely no love for communism (or neoliberalism, really) but I think it's pretty unfair to bunch Venezuela's current government (and mine as well, might as well) into "communism" or even socialism. It's socialism in name only when the elite lives in opulence thanks to all the stuff they take away from the common citizen while also outright mocking it by restricting its freedom and rights.

I've seen a concerning trend in people who defend past and current Chavismo, where they think it's actual, honest-to-god, can't-be-improved-in-any-manner-whatsoever socialism, and they do so without obtaining any benefit whatsoever from it. No one should set the bar that low just because they agree in paper with your political ideas.

Edit:

I keep saying that this has got to stop being about ideology, because it isn't. Chavismo is not a "left-wing government", it's a wanna-be dictatorship and exploitation. Reaching conclusions using the Venezuelan government is akin to reaching conclusions using North Korea, they are very particular cases that must be studied as anomalies.

Yeah, this. Hugoon said it better :v:

I feel you, man. Sometimes I feel really bad when I spend 20€ on a dumb videogame while knowing that my mom can't find, for instance, dog food without driving around the whole city.

Rocket League is real good, don't feel bad! :colbert:

On a more serious note, I see a lot of Venezuelan ads here in Argentina because I'm a DirecTV subscriber and it's really, really sad to see most of them. While they are basically the same as an Argentinian ad, in our case we can maybe say "hey, that's a little bit too idyllic" if you think about it. But when you contrast the current Venezuelan situation with all the happy people living in wonderfully clean streets lined with shops full of goods, it looks like something North Korea would make if the average North Korean had a TV. :(

Kim Jong-Il had to win over his father with gifts (also get rid of his step-brother) before Dad would let him play with the country. :v: At least he put some effort into it!

What I could see happening in the future is Colombia and other neighbours sending in cash and food so the regime doesn't collapse so that they won't have to deal with a humanitarian crisis. Kinda like Japan and South Korea with their crazy neighbour.

I think Maduro & co. are doing more than enough on their own to de-legitimize the elections, no need for outside help.

My university's student council's newspaper mentioned yesterday's attack as a false flag operation by the unified right. "No matter what, the revolution must keep going; otherwise Venezuela would be back to colonial times under an unpatriotic government" :allears:

IIRC they explicitly said no to national observers, which was reported on by El Nacional. Can't remember if it referred to independent ones or not.

One of the claims it makes is that there is irrefutable proof that there was CIA involvement in the 2002 coup. Checking online I can find allegations (with the most damning thing being that the CIA apparently knew about the whole coup before it happened) but the only claims that cite is a factual truth is... Telesur :v: Do you know anything about this, OP? Sorta interested to see if I'm missing something obvious. Best I could find was this, which points out some of the golpistas were well connected with people in the Bush administration.

And what should one do to be remembered?
I mean, it's been almost two decades from that and two administrations have since gone by, maybe something popped up in the meantime and I wasn't able to find it? Especially given all the leaks of recent times. There's no denying the US has always had a vested interest in Venezuela, but the "THE CIA IS EVERYWHERE AND WILL NEVER TELL YOU ANYTHING" has been used to justify all sorts of stupid claims made by chavistas during the last decade or so. Just last week I had to hear a two hour long spiel about how the US is currently deploying troops in Venezuela and we haven't heard anything because of CIA interference. But there's a difference between stuff going on now and stuff from almost two decades ago; wasn't the 'Iraq has weapons of mass destruction' argument proven untrue in the last few years?

The video I linked, for example, says Leopoldo Lopez is from a well-off family of aristocrats and pretty well connected to both the CIA and high Bush-era government officials, as well as a violent man. Which sounds like justification for the measures taken by Maduro and Chavez against him. So I'm taking it with a pinch of salt and checking what I can. :shobon: People in this thread (particularly Chuck) have proven tremendously knowledgeable on the topic before, so...

The measures taken against Lopez might also have something to do with how, inter alia, during the 2002 coup he took it upon himself to kidnap detain one of the government ministers personally, as you do.
