Welcome to the Auspol thread for September.

First things first: There will be no First Dog in this OP. You may cease holding your breath now.

Last time on Auspol

Who is who in politics these days?

The Australian Greens

Placed first since almost everyone who regularly posts in this thread is a member. The Greens are a left wing party of hippies who have unreasonable and impractical policy ideas and an infantile fascination with fairness and decency. They stubbornly refuse to give up and accept that the only way to make real change in the world is to roll over and accept neoliberal rule.

The Australian Labor Party

The ineffective and incompetent right wing opposition party led by an empty suit. Subject to numerous attempts at "change from within" that would be laughable if they weren't so sad. As an ineffective alternative to the government it has meekly agreed with almost everything the government wants to do that involves the brutal treatment and dehumanisation of refugees.

The Australian Liberal Party

The Liberal Party stands for just about every wrong headed thing you can think of. As a result they are wildly popular among both the rich shithead and poor shithead demographics. Sadly these are large demographics in Australia. They have recently been reaching out to the Fascist demographic as well. Their only saving grace is that they are so incompetent that they can't do so much as sneeze without making GBS threads themselves publicly.

IRC Information:

There is an irc channel, #auspol on synirc where Australians discuss things, presumably dark spooky things that man was not meant to know.

quote:

We have a word filter for certain gendered insults and occasionally words that are overused for trolling. A synirc services bot will detect these words being used and kick you. We do not apologize for this and will not change it, so don't bother complaining. And just to clear this up, this is my (ewe2)'s policy and not some random event. If you don't like it, go away. The bot will also kick for repeating phrases and will ban you for flooding.

We STRONGLY SUGGEST that you register your nick with Nickserv so we can add you to the voiced list. To do so, just

code:
/msg nickserv help register
where you normally type text, and the nickserv bot will explain what to do. The simple way to do it is:

code:
/msg nickserv register <password> [email]
The email part is optional.

Once you've registered, message one of the ops so we can add you to the list. Once you're on the voiced list, if we need to moderate the channel to cut down on the chaos, you will be able to take part in conversations. We can't just voice everyone all the time, so this is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. Once you're added, you must

code:
/msg nickserv identify <password>
when you join IRC to get voiced in our channel! It's a good idea to test all this out for yourself.

In some cases we may need to ban those intent on disrupting the channel. The reasons should be obvious, and follow the same basic guidelines as SA itself.

The media in Australia sucks rear end, so try these:
Crikey ! Was not on the list because I'm sure everyone know's of it but duck monster pointed out that it was stupid not to included it so now it's here are you happy look now you've upset your brother!
An Onymous Lefty: Left leaning, Victoria-centric blog by Jeremy Sear, Victorian barrister and Crikey contributor (the guy behind Pure Poison)
Caen's Corner: "Some not-so-brief thoughts by a Melbourne lawyer with an interest in criminal law and associated fields". Much more law than politics, but often plainly written and relevant.
Club Troppo: "Fearlessly dispensing political, legal and economic analysis (and some whimsy) since 2002". Left-leaning Aus politics blog. Usually exceptionally well written, and has multiple contributors.
The Conscience Vote: Left-leaning political commentary that I almost always agree with and fervently wish would get published in the place of Michelle Grattan's bile.
The Conversation: "The Conversation is an independent source of information, analysis and commentary from the university and research sector — written by acknowledged experts and delivered directly to the public. Our team of professional editors work with more than 2,800 academic authors to make this wealth of knowledge and expertise accessible to all." i.e. Actual information, before it gets hosed sideways by hack journalists.
The Failed Estate: "Rejuvenating Journalism in a Jaded Age" Australian media is loving terrible, so here is some commentary on it. Those comments are Mr Denmore, who "was a journalist for 26 years. He has worked in radio, television, newspapers and online media. He now works in the corporate sector."
Grog's Gamut: Aus politics commentary (with an economic bent) by Greg Jericho. Well written, well referenced. This guy was blogging during the 2010 federal election, pointing out how poo poo the media is, while being a public servant.
He was outed by The Australian for calling them on their poo poo.
Heathen Scripture: Exceptionally good satirical political commentary, which is unfortunately updated very rarely.
John Quiggin: "Commentary on Australian & world events from a social-democratic perspective" by a Professor of Economics.
Law Geek Down Under: Fairly straight-laced Australian legal news.
New Matilda: Very professional and well written news/politics/current affairs site. One of the better independent sources of Australian news.
News With Nipples: Somewhat casual/hobbyist Australian media/political blogging from a feminist perspective.
The Political Sword: In-depth and substantive politics and policy analysis.
Politically Homeless: Well written political commentary from Andrew Elder, former member of the Liberal Party, "starting off as a libertarian-punk, then as a moderate seeking to preserve rights and freedoms in a changing world; now he scorns the know-nothing Liberals, doesn't trust the left and disdains the other interest groups that flit around Australian politics".
Something Wonky: Dave and Jeremy's new Australian political+media+culture blog/podcast. Replaces Pure Poison formerly of Crikey
Pure Poison: Crikey's "look at the stupid poo poo the Australian media is doing" blog. Been replaced by Something Wonky above, but all of the blog is still viewable
Quis Custodiet Ipsos Custodies: A fairly legalistic Australian law blog, with some interesting analysis from time to time.
We Are All Dead: Matt Cowgill, who does economic analysis for the ACTU, posts political and economic stuff. Specialises in debunking trending Liberal talking points.
Wixxyleaks: Wixxy, claims no interest nor relation to Julian Assange. Mostly politics and other good insights. Good investigative piece regarding the Slipper and Thomson affair.
Left Flank: Commentary/analysis from a Marxist perspective.
Overland literary journal: An literary journal. Jeff Sparrow is the editor.
The Piping Shrike: Political blog. It's usually a good read.
Independent Australia: IA is a progressive journal focusing on politics, democracy, the environment, Australian history and Australian identity. IA supports quality investigative journalism as well as citizen journalism and a diversity of voices. It believes Australians are short-changed by the mass media and and so it dedicates itself to seeking out the truth and informing the public.
Reasonable Grounds: News in criminal justice, politics and human rights.

Labour has been so lovely the Liberals have been acting as govt and opposition.

Also for some stupid reason, the Greens aren't acting like they could completely replace labour; if (Jeremy) Corbyn has a reasonable chance of bringing back old labour in England, why can't the Greens do the same here?

Bjørn Lomborg, just a scientist with a different opinion?

The whole article is a good read and features many charts showing the actual data. A tl;dr summary is that he hasn't published anything of note in the scientific literature, and the one paper he has that did manage to get cited is from 1996 (And a grand total of once). He also has a habit of cherry picking his figures to make his arguments and ignoring realities on the ground.

As much as I like the greens, they can't really push into the current political situation like Corbyn. Both parties would go on the attack like it was an inner suberb election on crack, and they don't have much presence in a lot of places. If the greens gets to major party status, it'll be a slow process.

I have a supplemental question to Craig regarding my post which hasn't really garnered any response.

Do you still characterise income equality as "the politics of envy" when there are people who are in as good a situation as you are (ie. myself) who are in favor of it? Do you think that namecalling people who advocate for this stuff because they happen to be less well off than you is a lovely thing to do?

Guardian Au posted:

Peter Dutton says Fairfax 'trying to bring the government down'
Immigration minister says reporter at company are conducting ‘a bit of a jihad’ and the news organisation was being ‘helped by the ABC’

The Abbott government has blamed elements of the media for contributing to the Coalition’s electoral woes, with Peter Dutton accusing Fairfax of conducting “a bit of a jihad” and attempting to “bring the government down”.

The immigration minister argued Fairfax Media was “being helped by the ABC” in the task, while the social services minister, Scott Morrison, criticised an ABC interviewer for seeking to whip up a “frenzy” about the government and asking questions “in a very verballing way”.

Morrison complained the media was increasingly covering politics like it was reality television and the small business minister, Bruce Billson, said “the gossip peddlers” should “put it in Who Weekly”.

The Coalition - which has trailed Labor in major opinion polls published since last year - has suffered bad publicity in many media outlets about the ill-fated visa-check operation in Melbourne by the Australian Border Force.

Fairfax Media reported on Monday that it had been told by two cabinet ministers that talks had been held about Joe Hockey being replaced as treasurer if the Coalition does badly in the Canning by-election in Western Australia this month, a suggestion rejected by Tony Abbott.

Dutton said it would be helpful if some political commentators “started reporting on the incidents, as opposed to being players themselves”.

“I think there’s a huge move by Fairfax at the moment to try and bring the government down, that’s fair enough,” he told the ABC’s AM program on Tuesday.

“They aren’t supposed to be political players, they’re supposed to be objective reporters of the news and I think many of them have morphed into frustrated politicians themselves ... I think regardless of what Tony Abbott does, Fairfax will say it’s bad. I think regardless of what Joe Hockey or the Abbott government does, Fairfax will say it’s bad.”

When the interviewer noted that journalists were being helped by government members who were leaking and backgrounding, Dutton added: “They’re being helped by the ABC as well, there’s no question about that, some elements of the ABC.”

Dutton made even stronger remarks in an interview with Sky News. “There is a bit of a jihad being conducted by Fairfax at the moment,” he said.

Fairfax’s The Age newspaper received some criticism from the ABC’s Media Watch program on Monday for the way it had presented allegations about the SAS record of the Liberal candidate for Canning, Andrew Hastie. Media Watch said the front page presentation was “unfair and misleading” but it did not find fault with the journalist.

Morrison said the Canning by-election was “a test for all of us” and he would not engage in speculation about Hockey’s position.

When asked by the ABC AM host, Michael Brissenden, whether he would take the treasurer’s job, Morrison said: “It’s speculative nonsense, Michael; I’m not going to indulge this fantasy of yours.”

Brissenden asked whether the leaking was a sign of a government in crisis and that a number of colleagues were worried the Coalition was heading for defeat after one term, prompting a forceful response from Morrison.

“Michael, you pose these questions in a very verballing way and I’m not about to entertain it,” the minister said. “What I will say to you is this: it is becoming commonplace for politics to be reported on like it is reality television. We as a government take it more seriously than that ... I’m not going to feed the frenzy you’re seeking to whip up, Michael.”

When pressed on the government’s standing in the opinion polls, Morrison said: “You can make forecasts, you can make predictions, you can call the end of the Abbott government if you wish to, Michael ... I’m getting that slight sentiment from you, Michael, and it doesn’t surprise me, but what we’re focused on is the job of good government for this country.”

Billson seemed reluctant to buy into the discussion about media coverage, saying the government should “focus on the job at hand”.

“We’ve got important work to do. Let’s get on with it,” the small business minister told Sky News.

Billson took aim at cabinet leakers. “For colleagues that want to background the media they can either pardon themselves from cabinet, because there are disciplines they’re not living up to, or they need to be punted,” he said.

His warning echoed comments by the NSW Liberal senator and former minister Arthur Sinodinos, who said on Monday that the prime minister “should sack any minister or adviser who is engaged in such deliberate leaking and destabilisation”.

Dutton told Seven’s Sunrise program that people could “have a fair idea who is leaking” and it could “only be for their own ambitions”.

“If you can discover who the person is, of course they should be [sacked]. We should talk about the things the government is achieving,” Dutton said.

Abbott, when opposition leader, took a dim view of the former Labor government’s complaints about unfair coverage by News Corp - which included the Daily Telegraph’s “Kick this mob out” front page at the beginning of the 2013 election campaign.

“Fundamentally, if you want good coverage, you have got to perform well and the reason why this government gets poor coverage, at least in some areas of the media, is because it has been the worst government in our history. If you want better coverage, be a better government,” Abbott said in August 2013.

Fairfax’s Sydney Morning Herald editorialised in favour of Abbott before the 2013 election, while its Melbourne stablemate - The Age - backed the Labor party. News Corp papers overwhelmingly backed Abbott.

Several Fairfax journalists responded to Dutton’s comments on Twitter by tweeting the 2013 quote from Abbott about better media coverage coming from being a better government.

Others either mocked the comments or pointed out that the Coalition’s Senate leader, Eric Abetz, had praised Fairfax and ABC investigative reports about union corruption as an contributor to the decision to launch the royal commission.
