Plane-posting as we sit at the gate. They say there's some problem with paperwork. We'll see if it's that, or a case of "woops forgot this plane needs a total overhaul, good luck!" like the last time Southwest "delayed" my flight.

Not all accident shows up on Carfax.

I rearended someone in my old Accord, then a year later it was totaled by vandalism. Carfax still shows it as having a clean title and no incidents beyond failing emissions once (passed on the same day 20 miles later, so I guess they'd just replaced the battery).

Computer bitching: I got sick of Windows 10, and chose the "Downgrade back to Windows 8.1" option. Well, it downgraded fine. It boots fine, but Explorer.exe (the desktop) never loads. I even tried launching it from task manager, tried opening a cmd.exe windows and launching it from there, tried safe mode.. nothing. No desktop ever comes up.

Thankfully my desktop runs the same version (8.1 Pro w/Media Center), so I made a USB recovery drive from that. Figured I'd be able to use startup repair, but it didn't do poo poo. And it looks like Windows 10 removed all of the system restore images. :argh: So it looks like I get to play some command prompt shenanigans and see how much more I can break it. At this point, worst case, I reinstall on top of the existing OS and do it as an "upgrade".

My $300 shitbox 323 is up to $480 including registration. I spent $40 and all day making a side exit exhaust for it to be emissions tested. Turns out since the car was purchased in October, I have to go through emissions again in one month...
I also found out RockAuto has a wholesaler closeout of the full cat back system for $60... So I ordered that as well because I can't find a 2in in/out muffler with with centered ports for under $50, and the car sounds like poo poo unmuffled.

My $1100 shitbox apparently has two catalytic converters, one front and one rear, with a total replacement cost of $575 including labor.

Gonna check Rockauto again because fuuuuuck thaaaaat.

Well it doesn't pass smog, CO and hydrocarbons through the roof which apparently generally means carb, O2 sensor, or cat. I replaced my O2 sensor and will do the free retest soon to see if that helped. Carb appears to be mostly computer-tuned besides an idle adjustment screw. Otherwise I'm asking around for a less scrupulous emissions testing place.

I had a reasonably productive afternoon working on the pickup.

With the help of a big-rear end wrench as a prybar and my wife tightening down the sliding bolt, I finally got the alternator tensioned enough that my belt stopped squealing. It had been really bad yesterday because the rain caused it to make noise whenever I started from a stop, not just when I turned on the truck.

Tracked down what seems to be the problem with the turn signals. When you push the handle to turn, it is meant to send ignition-switched power to the flasher, then route the flasher's signal out again toward the bulb. If you turn on the hazards, it takes fused battery power, sends it to the flasher, and sends that back out to both bulbs. The problem I'm having is that when signaling a turn, it's not connecting the ignition-switched power to the flasher module... no continuity between the pins. I see a connection between the flasher's signal return pin and the appropriate bulb pin, but not between power and the flasher. If I hit the hazard switch, I see a connection from battery power pin to flasher pin, because hazards work.

I also discovered that the hose for the warm air intake was totally hosed on both ends, but it was that expanding drier-hose style so I just cut off the ends, stretched it, and clamped it back on.

Then I grabbed the can of black semi-gloss and went over the bumpers, which appear to have been previously rattlecanned and were looking pretty faded. Looks good now; no pictures since it was getting dark.

Then my wife and I went for African food, jerked chicken and injera with lentils, chicken, and collard greens :getin:

Good start to the 3 day weekend. Tomorrow, I'll try to teach myself how to hand-cut mortise and tenon joints so I can build our dining room table.

Primarily, you can't rent either out at the old gravel quarry where no old farts bitch at you for shooting too fast.

I finally got around to watching the final episode of Top Gear last night and goddamn. That was maybe one of the best episodes I'd seen in a long time, maybe the best they ever did. For starters, leaving aside Jeremy's grumbling at the very beginning, they all seemed to be genuinely enjoying it. The two "films" were in the style I loved best: buy cheap old vehicles and go do stupid poo poo with them, breaking down from time to time. The classic sports car thing was great, although I swear for their "buy an old car" episodes they go out of their way to find something that'll break down constantly. I was honestly shocked that Hammond came in last on the race at the end, given that he had the best vehicle in the best shape and had more experience driving offroad (of course the outcome may have been pre-decided)

And, best of all, they didn't have a "star in a reasonably priced car" segment! Shame it took them until the last episode to drop that bit.

they also didn't have the bit with the newest supercar or whatever at the very beginning, with the wanky "intern just got his hands on After Affects" videography. Other people probably liked that part, though
