So I tried posted a post in the 'recommend me a car' thread in A/T, and it quickly got hijacked and I never got a response.

My little brother is an immature poo poo who sucks at driving. I've kept his Honda on the road for eight years and now the exhaust is making a funny noise and he refuses to drive it. He's driving my mom's Nissan Rogue to work.

They're giving him $4k to replace his Honda, and he wants a truck. It has to be "good in the winter" so I'm thinking 4WD + recommending snow tires, and it has to be "reliable." (Note, his Honda only left him stranded once, when the 7-year-old battery died).

He's getting a new vehicle like now, whether I think it's a smart or good idea or not.

I'm also in charge of finding it for him (and then selling his Honda).

I'm in northern Indiana, and there's a huge amount of used Rangers, F150s and Cherokees on craigslist. Anything else I should be looking for? I know a fair bit about Rangers and Cherokees, but what about like 2000-ish F-150s?

(Also, anybody want a 1998 Honda Accord for a grand? The body is in bad shape but mechanically it's in good shape, brand new battery alternator and tires... will need a timing belt done pretty soon though.)

Check out the safety ratings on iihs.org, especially for a 2000 F-150 :v:

urgh... did a full drive flange to drive flange rebuild on the front axle of a mates landcruiser today (80 series) because of knackered kingpin bearings and REALLY noisy CV joints.

First side, CV didnt want to seperate from the drive shaft and mushroomed out the splines where the circlip holds it on. Had to hack the cage apart with a grinder and an air hammer, pop the balls out then grind through the inner spider in 3 places and split it with a cold chisel to get the thing off the shaft. THEN clean up the splines for the new CV to fit on.

Second one the CV popped right off with the pipe trick, but then when we were putting it back together one of the studs for the kingpin bearings sheared off out of the knuckle. Lost an hr trying to find a replacement stud.

So. Much.Grease. Would have gone through two dozen pairs of gloves each and we filled a 20L bucket with paper towels and rags from cleaning out CV's and steering knuckles. Burnt them all in the shed fire and got a 10" flue to glow red hot from firebox to shed roof! Hell of an improvement tho, he can turn under power without "CLACK CLACK CLACK" following him and the steering doesnt "Tip" out of the centre any more because the king pin bearings no longer have grooves hammered into them.

Uhh...how's that smell?

I'm 99,999% sure it cannot be used as evidence in court, but that doesn't necessarily apply to how the insurance company would use it.

Maybe they'll use it and decide the insurance case in my favor, but then I'll get a small fine for illegally recording people without their consent. Similar things have happened before.

Supposedly in the Czech Republic it's the same way when it comes to video surveillance systems. To get one admissible in court is some crazy hassle.

I told him that I would be interested to hear if he knew where it was. He said that he knew where it was, and had verified the correct VIN. He also said that he know exactly the guy who had it and where to find it.

Then he asked if there was any sort of reward for finding it. I told him that no, I wasn't offering anything, because I had gotten my insurance payout and thus the motorcycle technically belongs to the insurance company now. So any information he could give me would be passed on to the insurance company and the police.

After that he suddenly didn't want to give me any information after all

Looks like they have the "drivatars" enabled for single player now. They are supposed to take the driving style of the person. If you have friends theirs' come first (if they've played the game I think). When Forza 5 first came out all the drivatars seemed to have ramming set to 100%. I presume they've toned that down. Well, I guess if you are just using that size tire it would be fine, but they would also go on a 17x8 and then you could go 225/45 or even 235/45 for your next set of tires if you wanted. And the difference in weight is only like 1lb/wheel. Neither are in stock where I can get them from (I have a tirerack wholesale acct but they don't drop ship), so it would possibly take a few eeks and I probably can't save you very much over tirerack. But I can let you know tomorrow unless you are sitting there staring at the checkout button.

I don't mind waiting one day. I didn't know my tires would fit on wheels that wide. Neat.
