THREAD UPDATE TWO: News sources have claimed that Prime Minister David Cameron was involved in a secretive university society where he did interesting things with livestock parts.
Pigchat starts on Page 140

THREAD UPDATE:

Corbyn won by one of the (if not the) biggest margins in a leadership election! This is big news!
Now we can sit back and watch the gutter press have an aneurysm about moderate socialist reformers lurking under their bed.

Cry more :unsmigghh:

Tom Watson won the deputy leader election. People are less enthused about this, but he has a reputation for getting things done. Also he likes video games and ranting about anti-piracy laws and looks like this:

Tom, post your forums name.

I hope that the combination of Jeremy's hardcore civil liberties stance and Tom's actually knowing how computers work stance will give a swift kick to the balls of Cameron's plan to ban scary maths that terrorists use.

---------------------------

Halfway through the Labour Leadership Elections, which will be announced mid-September. It's too late to register to vote now, and they're busy sifting out all the dirty entryists from the serious sensible Blairites.
Fortunately, Corbyn still looks to be the odds-on favourite (at time of checking). Unfortunately bookies results are as vulnerable to mania as anything else.

This is going to be a Big Thing mid-thread. Hopefully a Good Big Thing, so: Who is running? Who should care? What should I do?

The Leadership Candidates
From left to right (:v:):

Jeremy Corbyn

Thread bae. Unlikely outside candidate turned frontrunner, who didn't even want the job. The most radical of the four and hated by most of the press and the Blood God Blair. Has a hat and beard, like half the thread posters.

Andy Burnham

Possibly a robot designed by committee. Awaiting policy programming. Recently updated to oppose as many as four Tory policies.

Yvette Cooper

More right-wing than the above two, but again undecided on many policies until the PLP decides what policies are to be decided on. Blairite authoritarian type who called Cameron 'soft on crime'.

Liz Kendall

The most right-wingest and Blairistest of the contenders. MP for Leicester West, next door to me. Likes Public Enemy. We are not to sexualize her in this thread (only Corbae and his hat to be sexualized).

(Although this does exist https://vine.co/v/ejAJTxt7Ktj)

The Deputy Leadership Candidates
Some other people :effort:. If anyone wants to do a run-down of them I'll stick it here.
(The actual candidates are Ben Bradshaw, Stella Creasy, Angela Eagle, Caroline Flint, and Tom Watson. Tom likes video games.)

Why Should I Care?
It's your chance to have something other than austerity or austerity-lite in the future, to shift the Overton window left, and to have an actual opposition instead of someone who will say "we will tory, but not as tory as the tories toried."

What should I do?
If you are a True Supporter of Labour Values and not a Telegraph reader or Trot entryist you should have already registered to vote and voted Correctly. Now we wait and laugh as the media gets increasingly agitated about the very real possibility that people like Jeremy Corbyn exist.
(Being a True Supporter of Labour Values includes bringing back Clause IV :getin:)
If you haven’t received a ballot by 1 September please get in touch via http://www.labour.org.uk/contact . Alternatively you can call 0845 092 22 99.

What Else is Going On?
Corbyn-mania has taken over much of the last two threads, but there are some other things happening, mostly involving the ongoing refugee crisis and what awful people in the media think of it.
Also Jonathon Jones has terrible views on the artsall things.
And horror creator Wes Craven has died, but real life movie monster Iain Duncan Smith continues to claim victims. Thanks to a popular petition, his kill count has been released, but in an obfuscated form, leaving campaigners wondering where to go next.

There's something weird about Andy's mouth. It's like when I started shaving, and it looked a bit puffy or something after I shaved the bumfluff off?

I dunno, it doesn't look like a normal human mouth and it makes him look a bit like an alien or waxwork.

Actually like the whole lower half of his face looks perpetually disproportioned, and differently so in every picture.

Has anyone actually seen him? Do we know he exists?

I'd appreciate some bailiff advice.

My brother is an idiot and has run up £1000 + in court fines by repeatedly not bothering to pay. He doesn't live at home any more but all the notices and visits are coming here.

This morning there was a notice through the door saying that if he doesn't pay immediately the bailiffs will turn up without notice. I know he won't pay or make any arrangements to pay. Like I said, he doesn't live here, and the only things that belong to him here are a few clothes.

If they show up while I'm home, what should I do? Can they take things that belong to me or my mum, or break into the house while I'm gone? They've been told he doesn't live here, and that I don't know where he lives or have any way to contact him because I hate him and haven't spoken to him voluntarily in years, but they don't seem to believe that.

Be polite but firm. Generally speaking bailiffs cannot force entry (although they can let themselves in via open doors or windows so get in the habit of locking everything) although they may try to get in by asking to use the toilet etc. Make sure you ask to see their ID, and the ID of anyone else who calls as some bailiffs have been known claim to be repairmen etc to get inside.

Bailiffs can only remove goods belonging to the person owing the debt but in practice they can be pretty cavalier about this. "That's not me, it's my brother" is one they've probably heard a million times so if you have proof of identity to hand that could smooth things out. They can remove vehicles parked at the property - again, they should check with the DVLA to make sure it's registered to the debtor, but in practice you might want to park round the corner for a bit if you have a car.

Good luck, being harassed over someone else's debts is not fun but they legally can't do anything to you or your mum.

How do you deal with them long term? Standard practise now is to have a go at recovering the debt then sell it on if you can't. So even if you tell one company that your brother doesn't live there, and even if they give enough of a poo poo to pay any attention, you'll soon have the same problem again when they sell on the contract.

Is there no legal recourse for being harassed over a debt that isn't yours? It feels like you should have a way of saying "gently caress off or we'll sue you."

Some say his extreme-right links are clearly known, even in the fascist capitalist imperialist Murdochist press...
Is Slake being harassed though, or is just that his brother has set Slake's house as the mailing address? Are the bailiffs contacting Slake personally, or are they just sending mail to his brother thinking that Slake's house is the brother's house?

Probably the latter, but if they're informed that the debtor is not resident at that address then sending the bailiffs round is harassment of those who are resident there.

One other thing Slake - you're under no obligation to tell them where your brother is even if you did know. It's got nothing to do with you and they can do their own legwork.

I had a vaguely similar thing happen a while back - had a uniformed bloke turn up on my door with some official/menacing-sounding documents asking for some guy who apparently lived in this house before I moved in. Showed Mr. Uniform my driver's licence to prove I wasn't the guy he was after, told him that I moved into the house a year ago and had never met the previous occupants, and never heard from him or his employers ever again. Your situation may be a bit more awkward since it's your brother rather than a complete stranger that they're after, but if you show them that you are not your brother and that your brother doesn't live at your house, they should gently caress off and leave you be.

This is indeed a good article, but as you say, I think he's suggesting far too much for one person to appear to focus on. I think the real point to draw from this is that it's CRITICAL if Corbs wins, for him to immediately surround himself with credible people who share his basic ideology, if any of them exist in the PLP. He can't fight all these fights on his own, he needs a shadow cabinet who are similarly competent and likeable and willing to actually stand for the principles he sets for the party. He needs a strong voice on economics, a strong voice on welfare, a strong voice on defence, a strong voice on foreign policy, and let's be honest, there's no way all those voices can be his and still allow him the luxuries of sleep and food.

Who wants their daily dose of Welcome to 5 Years of Tories?

quote:

As pupils go back to school this week, concerns are growing over the future of the government’s programme to provide free nutritious hot meals to four- to seven-year-olds.

As part of the chancellor’s autumn spending review, in which all areas of public expenditure are in scope for cuts, the Department for Education will be drawing up detailed plans for making savings. Although overall school funding, including pupil premium rates, will be protected on a per-pupil basis, the budget for the universal infant free school meals programme is not ringfenced.

[...]

And some small and rural schools are providing dinners at a loss. Despite a government grant last year – reduced from £3,000 in 2014-15 to £2,300 this year – and a capital fund to which schools can apply for extra support, these primaries are still having to subsidise meals policy out of their teaching and learning budgets. Jo Wotton, catering manager for four schools in the Saint’s Way Academy federation in Cornwall, says: “I would love someone to show me how to break even with 50 children eating. I don’t think it’s possible unless we provide any old meal – and not a healthy nutritious meal.” Last month, the National Association of Small Schools warned some lessons could be cut to finance the meals.
