I'm a mess in distress
But we're still the best dressed
*Unless you are in Arizona, Montana, Louisiana, Iowa or Washington

When the UIGEA passed in 2006, online poker and casino gaming was doomed. However, an exception for wagering "games of skill" such as fantasy sports would soon come to create a multi-billion dollar industry all with the partnerships of the same leagues who have fought tooth and nail for decades to stop sports gambling.

With many of these sites, mainly DraftKings and FanDuel being advertised like crazy now this season what better time than to throw $20 onto one of these site and have some fun with it, if you put in some time grind out a few bucks a week or my personal favorite; blindly put a lineup into one of the bigger tournaments and:

How it works
Players are given dollar amount values and you are given a salary cap from which to build a lineup with. The main game types are:
Tournaments-Large field event such as the Sunday Million which usually have a guaranteed prize pool (GPP) but top heavy payouts
Cash Games-All winners get the same payout, typically slightly less than their buy (50/50 which pays the top half), their buyin (double up which pay around 45%) and multipliers (Top 3rd win 3x the buy in, etc.)
Heads up-You play one other person in a winner take all.

Without getting too in depth the basic idea is to build lineups which have a high ceiling for GPPs and a low floor for 50/50.

Where to play

Fanduel - Referral link because I gots to get paid

https://www.fanduel.com/?invitedby=bfreeman&cnl=da

-The larger and older of the two main sites. The main difference with Draftkings is that lineups lock when a contest starts.
-Offers NFL and College Football, MLB, college and NBA Basketball and NHL

Draftkings

https://www.draftkings.com/r/BFreeman

-Frankly where I prefer to play. Players can be swapped until their game starts even if the contest has already begun. Football is scored full PPR whereas Fanduel is .5PR
-Has soccer (MLS, Barclays Premier League and UEFA Champions League), Golf, Nascar, MMA (UFC and Bellator) in addition to NFL and College Football, MLB, NCAA and NBA Basketball as well as NHL

Yahoo has recently established a dfs site of its own and their are a bunch of smaller ones I'll update this with as time allows.

Resources
News
You're still going to want to check Rotoworld or Rotowire depending on what you already do. Both have had a daily specific section for a while.

General Strategy
Rotogrinders - Largest dedicated DFS site and community
Reddit DFS - I would have to assume the second most active community
Daily Fantasy Sports Rankings Basic picks as well as a paid premium service. Never used it honestly.
Covers - Covers.com. Easiest way to do mass research for Over/Under and Lines on each game

Deeper Strategy
Bayesian Fantasy Football - I don't even know how to really describe without \either totally missing the point or sounding like a complete idiot but it's definitely worth a read.

Please use this thread for all general dfs discussion as well as lineup advice/critique

Anyone throwing Doug Martin in as a value pick/flier for RB slot on Fanduel and DraftKings? His price and matchup look perfect but... he's Doug Martin.

Is there a smaller site that might have a less informed pool of players? J/w. I'm interested in playing an, ahem, game of skill, *hand wank* where my opponents are less than skilled. What's the talent pool like on FanDuel and DraftKings?

Doug Martin is pretty much a classic example of the type of high upside player you would want in a tournament. As you mentioned the Titans probably wont be improved over last year when they were a total dumpster fire and he has looked good in preseason. That being said he has a higher probability of putting up a total dud than, say Mark Ingram or Lamar Miller, which is why he might not be ideal for cash games.

I will be making substantial updates to the op as time goes by. Especially highlighting some of the smaller sites. Just wanted to have something as football season started and there was a rush of newer players with these sites being advertised all over the place

PFF has a deal with DraftKings if you were interested in signing up for PFF Gold. You get it for free with a $10 deposit (first time users only).

I would highly recommend (if you haven't already) reading up on the different types of DFS games/leagues/whatever you can join (ex. head-to-head versus tournaments) and how the strategies change for each one. I burned through my money last year right quick because I didn't take that into consideration.

Yeah I have. I'm planning on sticking to cash games and avoiding head to head with maybe one 10 dollar tourney a week to add some spice. I'm not interested in being a serious grinder but I also don't want to put it all on black and spin once.

Ok, so I signed up for draft kings and I'm gonna do a few contests this week-end, I got free access to both of them through promo codes so it's pretty much to test the water

I'm wondering what the best strategy is for these things. Is it better to have an "even" team filled with the best consistent bang for buck, or is it better to go big+risky by having very expensive players that are a lock to get a ton of points, and pray that your ultra-cheap guys do something?

Depends on the type of contest. 50/50 or double-up games where you want to finish in the top 50%, go with consistency. Big prize pool tournament games you want to swing for the fences.

Moved off of Gronk (granted it was a free dollar from Fanduel to enter the 25K squib but still). Looks like multiple reloads for me this season :10bux:

I faded most of the Thursday lineup like normal, although it was hard cause of the matchup.

Glad I kept a few shares of Gronk though :getin:

Same here! Out of the six, I played one Brady/Gronk combo, two other Gronks (yay), and one Pittsburgh stack just because it was opening day and gently caress it.

Yeah, this is pretty critical. It also should go without saying, but check lineups to make sure you're not screwed by a manager who decides to give their big bats a night off.

Thursday was a success, I think: the three Gronk lineups are all making me happy, with both Gronk/Brady and Gronk/Brown off to excellent starts. And Roethlisberger and Wheaton were both reasonable value for their prices, so even the Steelers stack (Ben/Brown/Wheaton) turned out well.

Who do we think will be the highest ownership player this week on DraftKings? Let's just say in the Millionaire Maker, in case it's very close and different in various contests. Tyrod is definitely a contender, but I'm thinking Davante Adams is taking the crown with something absurdly over 50%.

I would have to agree that it would be Davante and then Tyrod being the most highly owned by a bit.

I actually think Beckham will be the third highest because Cowboys-Giants has shootout written all over it and the savings from Tyrod/Adams. Also people seem to be more in love with him than Julio (who im fading actually) or Dez who i think will have the best of the prestige wideouts this weekend.

This isn't DraftKings, and it was only for 1 Thursday Tournament, but Rotoworld had some ownership data.

No surprise: Davante Adams and Sam Bradford lead the pack. Tyrod is up there too.

Put in 55 lineups this week, about 90% GPPs, on DK and FD. Figured I'd post my exposure percentages by position. There's obviously a ton of value in week 1 which means there are even more combinations than usual that are promising for GPPs, hence the wide variety in my picks here.

Does anyone else take this kind of "spray and pray" approach to GPPs? Any possible hits I'm missing?

I prefer cash games myself but spray and pray is pretty much the only way to go to if I were trying to 'grind' GPPs. By dint of sheer numbers you've got pretty much all of the hits but I feel like you should try to find ways to fit in Steve Smith or Kamar Aiken in a few lineups since they'll be target monsters (especially Smith) in one the likely higher scoring games of the weekend.

You've convinced me to play one Baltimore receiver stack, 'cause why not? Spray and pray!

Wow, the overlay in the contests at StarsDraft (the site PokerStars took over and renamed, I believe it was previously called Victiv) is huge. $10 contest with a $100k guarantee will run with just over 5,000 players. 400 players guaranteed to cash in a $25 double-up that will have just over 600 players.

At least most of my big targets are doing well! Except for you, Alfred Blue. I knew better, and yet I played you several times.

I thought I had played way more Mariota than I did. On the bright side, I played some Mariota!

Edit: I have a pretty good Millionaire Maker sweat going:

QB Marcus Mariota
RB Jamaal Charles
RB Matt Forte
WR Davante Adams
WR John Brown
WR Kendall Wright
TE Delanie Walker
FLEX Adrian Peterson
D Panthers

Really wishing I had Mariota and Jones today instead of Tyrod and Adams. Also, Luck in most of my cash games  it is so dumb that this is legal and Poker isn't.

I only played them in one $3 lineup, it's all good!

I'm doing well on StarsDraft, if only because of all that overlay. The big sweat is in the Millionaire Maker, where I have 158.76 + Peterson tomorrow night. If he gets injured on the first play, I'll still cash. If he puts in a good 15-20, I should get inside the top 1,000 and make $300+. If he puts up a huge day, a $1,000+ cash could still be in play!

My Millionaire Maker roster went busto but I also entered a $9, $400k slant guaranteed with a rushed selection of a roster. I was in the money around mid-day but swapped out Bridgewater and Randle for Romo and Terrence Williams minutes before SNF started. I'm in 467th and have 155.04 with Peterson tomorrow. Looking forward to the sweat!

Similar. I'm 162/95833 in a $3 tournament with Peterson to go. My lowest score in that lineup came from Odell. Oh, what could have been.

Still, I think I could get a good cash here. Not the Millionaire Maker but if it keeps me in the green for the week I'm happy.

Really, really glad I went with my gut and didn't fade Julio Jones. May squeak into the money in a couple GPPs if Peterson has just a mediocre night.
