I told myself I would wait until Sunday to start playing again this season. Naturally, I fired six $3 lineups into contests starting Thursday.

I faded most of the Thursday lineup like normal, although it was hard cause of the matchup.

Glad I kept a few shares of Gronk though :getin:

Same here! Out of the six, I played one Brady/Gronk combo, two other Gronks (yay), and one Pittsburgh stack just because it was opening day and gently caress it.

Learned something new today. If you're playing MLB you might want to keep an eye on the weather reports. Literally half my team has had their games postponed today.

Yeah, this is pretty critical. It also should go without saying, but check lineups to make sure you're not screwed by a manager who decides to give their big bats a night off.

Thursday was a success, I think: the three Gronk lineups are all making me happy, with both Gronk/Brady and Gronk/Brown off to excellent starts. And Roethlisberger and Wheaton were both reasonable value for their prices, so even the Steelers stack (Ben/Brown/Wheaton) turned out well.

I hope it's Tyrod Time

Who do we think will be the highest ownership player this week on DraftKings? Let's just say in the Millionaire Maker, in case it's very close and different in various contests. Tyrod is definitely a contender, but I'm thinking Davante Adams is taking the crown with something absurdly over 50%.

I prefer cash games myself but spray and pray is pretty much the only way to go to if I were trying to 'grind' GPPs. By dint of sheer numbers you've got pretty much all of the hits but I feel like you should try to find ways to fit in Steve Smith or Kamar Aiken in a few lineups since they'll be target monsters (especially Smith) in one the likely higher scoring games of the weekend.

You've convinced me to play one Baltimore receiver stack, 'cause why not? Spray and pray!

Wow, the overlay in the contests at StarsDraft (the site PokerStars took over and renamed, I believe it was previously called Victiv) is huge. $10 contest with a $100k guarantee will run with just over 5,000 players. 400 players guaranteed to cash in a $25 double-up that will have just over 600 players.

I thought I had played way more Mariota than I did. On the bright side, I played some Mariota!

Edit: I have a pretty good Millionaire Maker sweat going:

QB Marcus Mariota
RB Jamaal Charles
RB Matt Forte
WR Davante Adams
WR John Brown
WR Kendall Wright
TE Delanie Walker
FLEX Adrian Peterson
D Panthers

I only played them in one $3 lineup, it's all good!

I'm doing well on StarsDraft, if only because of all that overlay. The big sweat is in the Millionaire Maker, where I have 158.76 + Peterson tomorrow night. If he gets injured on the first play, I'll still cash. If he puts in a good 15-20, I should get inside the top 1,000 and make $300+. If he puts up a huge day, a $1,000+ cash could still be in play!

If we're doing referral links, I'll pass one along for StarsDraft: https://www.starsdraft.com/r/r1uhkmiltp

Lots of overlay in the Millionaire Maker this week! Probably the most surprising player I fairly highly targeted this week was Nick Foles. I see no reason that he won't have at least a fairly good game against the Redskins, and he should have pretty low ownership, so a big game (which is definitely a possibility...again, Redskins) could set those lineups up for a great week.

Edit: The final score in the Milly Maker on DraftKings: over $1.55 million in free money! :woop:

In short, for 99% of the people out there, you probably should be playing these for fun (and it is lots of fun), not with any expectation of turning a profit. Just play these to have fun until they get banned in a year or two.

Indeed - I'd love to hit a contest big one of these days, but whatever, it's a lot of fun to play, even on the weeks that go badly, like this one. On to Week 3!

By the way, I'd be stunned if DFS got the banhammer from the federal government, given the powerful media and sports interests aligned with the major sites. On the other hand, I'd be almost as stunned if these sites didn't see themselves regulated in the next few years.

I write about gambling-related issues for a living, so just to hit the highlights of the legal discussion:

JoshTheStampede posted:

I thought Pallone was the guy always banging the drum for legalized sports betting? I assumed he was going for a "if dfs is legal why isn't betting legal too" angle, not a "let's ban dfs" angle.

This is correct! I mean, it sure seems that way, anyway. This is even more clear when you look at what Pallone asked for: he didn't really ask his fellow Congressmen to look into the legality of DFS, but rather what the relationship was between the sports leagues and the DFS sites. In other words: why are they in bed but trying to stop us from legalizing sports betting?

Sub Par posted:

It probably took some powerful interests to get such clear language inserted in the bill in the first place, and I don't think dozens of brands worth a collective several billion dollars would hitch their wagon to something like this without knowing it's safe. With online poker, I think we all knew the clock was ticking back in 2006.

This is also correct! In 2006, there was already a lot of fear that a ban was coming; we just weren't prepared for how it would happen, which was sudden and with no debate. The industry had no protection or political support in the United States, but had made a lot of enemies.

Yuzenn posted:

The originator of the bill to change the laws involving DFS is Pallone and he is the congressman in my great state, which just so happens to be so anti gambling it's crazy.

You think New Jersey is "so anti-gambling it's crazy?" In just the last couple of years, your state government has regulated online poker and casino sites, is looking into building a North Jersey casino to compete with the ones coming in NY, and has engaged in several lawsuits against the major sports leagues and the federal government in an effort to legalize sports betting.

Also, to clarify: there is no bill, and he has made no proposal to change any laws involving DFS.

While online poker died in a big way in the us when the UIEGA passed it really didn't go away to the extent it has until Black Friday in April 2011 (right?)

Yeah, UIGEA kind of blunted the forward momentum for the industry, but it was Black Friday that killed online poker in the US (and hurt it everywhere else because of the massive loss of liquidity when all us Americans were gone).

Yuzenn posted:

Forgive my mistype but I meant Legalized sports gambling, not overall gambling. The Governor has made a pretty big line in the sand about Sports Gambling even when the efforts in the State Legislature has tried to open up the rules to allow for it at casinos to start and then to allow residents to join sports betting websites. All of the efforts to legalize sports betting got struck down by the Third Circuit Court and currently is not able to be appealed. The State just cannot get around the PASPA law and FYI those major sports leagues sued NJ (and won in 2013), not the other way around...they want the status quo the exact way it is and if they are not getting a cut no one else will be.

Oh, I completely agree that the state can't get around PASPA when it comes to legalized sports betting, no matter how hard they try (the latest attempt was clever, but not really convincing). They are trying to petition for the whole Third Circuit to hear the case, but even if the court wants to hear the case again, I doubt they'd win there any more than they did with the three-judge panel. And yes, the leagues sued NJ after they passed a sports betting law - sorry if I wasn't clear in my last post!
