I think with Bj it's more that he looks suitably aryan enough to get him past the front lines. The point is that other people do the spying, he's more infiltration and extraction.

It works in english because our language doesn't really have a set pattern for tenses like the romance languages do. The past tense of lie is lay. Where as the present tense of laid is lay. I have no idea how german conjugation works normally, but from my brief wiki trolling it looks like the infinitives are similar but the conjugations are very different.
