I understand Warhammer Online was a massive failure (although you could argue that GW did itself no favors by refusing to let the game go free-to-play), but going with this lowest-bidder-and-maybe-it'll-work plan is basically throwing money away and making your IP look like poo poo.

You don't have to make your IPs into whatever genre is popular today, GW. Well, at least they're not making a 40k moba- oh wait :commissar:

In Warhammer 40k it works well enough since the Space Marines are just a small group of super soldiers used to break through the enemy front. Obviously you can't play as an Imperial Guard or such, but it's alright.

And frankly the civilizations in 40k are so huge and unwieldly that most of armies seemingly operate of their own accord. The only ones that would be harder to get away with would be the ones being mind controlled or given orders via telepathic brain bugs.

Good to know upfront that they gave up on something which might possibly be cool but probably suck in favor of doing something that will definitely suck.
In their defense, crowdfunding a MMO has never loving worked, so I'm glad to see a dev trying to scale it back and work within their means as opposed to promising the moon.

the other people on SA that have it had it purchased for them by a star citizen j4g who was really into bitcoins and also liked to complain about how unfair the age of consent is
Is this just a trend in the MMO forum?

They hope to work they way back to an open world game.
I still must say that I'm glad to see an MMO developer that's at least a bit grounded in reality and knows when to scale things back instead of promising the moon.
