I have a feeling the developers of this game are a couple slavs locked up in a basement somewhere but they keep on pumping out updates and their progress is good so I feel this deserves a little attention. Especially since it's basically a reunion of CD Projekt Red talent for an MMO.

Please note: They updated the ruleset and I didn't know, now it's partial loot. I would change the title if I could.

quote:

Gloria Victis is a low fantasy Medieval MMORPG with an emphasis on realism. What does this mean? Open PvP with territory control, non-target combat, sandbox crafting, player-driven economy and no fireballs. All served up with a deep, mature story.

Our Supporters already have Early Access to the current version of Gloria Victis. The current price is calculated to cover the costs of the constant development of Gloria Victis, upkeep the servers and supporting the game after release. However the final release will come with a free, content-limited trial with the possibility to eventually unlock the content through gameplay, owners of the early access will be granted full access to the entire content delivered in the final version, as well as numerous precious rewards for purchasing the game during development.

quote:

Great PvP | Fight to the death, loot defeated enemies with an innovative looting system, participate in knight tournaments, epic realm vs realm wars where armies collide and castle/city sieges.

Realistic Combat | Engage in action-based, non-target combat where your skills and tactics matter, using weapons and armour modelled upon authentic medieval equipment.

Deep Background | Choose between the four nations of Midlanders, Azebs, Ismirs and Sangarians, each based upon a real medieval power and equipped with a rich culture, belief system and history as well as aesthetically different equipment.

Complex Progression System | Build your character from scratch or choose one of premade builds. Earn stats and skills and level up to become who you want to be – there are no boundaries at all!

Sandbox Crafting System | Create your own items with Gloria Victis' ten different crafts, in which your success depends on your skill rather than luck. Specialise in one profession, becoming one of the crafting masters shaping your nation’s economy or be a self-reliant jack of all trades.

Non-instanced Housing System | Build your own house, set up your village and fortify it together with your guild members. Besiege the castles of your enemies and rule over large territories.

Harsh World | Survive in an unpleasant, living open world, full of wild animals, robbers, monsters from medieval legends and beasts in human form. The choices you make affect the way people react to you.

Breath-taking Storyline | Deep, epic, non-linear story co-created with Jacek Komuda and Maciej Jurewicz, well-known writers and authors of The Witcher’s story script, numerous books and an RPG setting. There also are extensive dialogues and mature quests – Gloria Victis brings the 'RPG' back to 'MMORPG'.

Rich Social System | Be part of a living feudal society – serve as vassal or become a powerful lord, build the world’s economy, create and lead influential guilds, conquer territories under your own unique banner and shape the political map of the world.

You can take one of the sides, join a guild, family or order and in their name retake sacred grounds that other families are trying to claim. You can join with your friends and follow the trail of missing artifacts surrounded by legends. You can delve into the mysteries of unnerving events, learn the history and take possession of the wisdom and glory it holds.

Huge world to explore | Enjoy travels through our non-instanced world, discover ancient secrets and seek forgotten treasure ‒ or just take a stroll through our vibrant living environment.

I back this game with the full 40 or 50 they were looking for a year or more ago. I haven't played in awhile, the ping in the US and the invisible mobs made the game un playable. If goons want to jump into this game, I am down.

Yeah, same reason why I left after I backed it a year or two ago but I just tried it again and there's a US server now in addition to the EU server. Performance is much, much better too.

That... doesn't really look like a physics based combat system. Unless they're just really bad players?

I like the idea of an MMO version of M&B, but without combat physics I can't see how player skill is going to happen.

I don't know if it's physics based since that'd take a lot of resources from an authoritative server-based MMO but the combat controls being based on mouse movement and "power of attack" definitely are in there. A majority of the players I've met come from Warband mods like Persistent World and cRPG

Who is Big Guy? Said he's a goon that heard about it on the forums.

Bleh still only 2 races and no females....

It's based on Medieval Europe so outside of Northern African content (which may or may not happen, I'm not sure), Nordic and various monarchies, there isn't much to add.

They have 4 planed races from what I can tell, I think one is Arab. The Turks loved to invade eastern Europe.

Oh yeah I forgot about those. They're going to add naval travel and combat so you'll be able to travel to a separate continent likely containing the Arab/Egyptian-inspired content

Yeah there really isn't much to do at the moment outside of crafting, grinding mobs, and ghost capping enemy positions.

The state of the game at the moment is basically a tightnit crew of level 100 GV diehards getting into dick waving contests and steam rolling new players. Nobody really engages in the territory control aspects from what I've seen. For inctance the last few weeks I've seen midlanders owning everything but the isamir farm with no resistance.

The lack of auction/low population makes it almost vital that you take up crafting which requires a massive investment in time if you want to make anything decent.

All of that being said it's a very promising game and all of those issues can be chocked up to pre-alpha. At $10 its worth picking up in my opinion as the devs have been releasing huge ammounts of content the last few months.

Yeah, that's how I feel about it. It's something to log into every once in a while but it's not your "go to" kind of game yet. Has the potential to be in the future, but for $10 it's worth the experience.

This reminds me of Darkfall. Convince me that this isn't going to be dead 4 months after launch.

Speaking of Darkfall, have you heard that there's a possibility that the community is able to get the license from Adventurine to host their own Darkfall servers? It'd be nice if it happens.

They updated with some improvements to the combat model

- Building the entire towns and castles from scratch, including walls, towers and gates!
- Breaking the enemy's block with a kick!
- Being blocked and kicked by the NPC enemies!
- Dealing damage only to the first hit enemy!

For a skill based non-target PVP system, that combat looks really awful. Shame as it sounds rather promising

I don't know what they were thinking showing that footage, my gameplay is much less choppy looking/feeling... I don't know if it's technical issues in their footage or I'm just blind to it, but when I play, it doesn't look like that.

Game is laggy as gently caress. Also, is there not directional blocking?

No direction blocking (at least I haven't noticed it) and unfortunately I don't think we're not at the point where we can have server authoritative combat mechanics like M&B at a massive scale without a bit of jankiness. It will certainly be better than Mortal Online though. That's the real reason why it isn't attempted often.

Then again, it is pre-alpha so maybe they'll be able to do it.

Can someone just program a next generation networking architecture that can support massive amounts of data being sent and received from thousands of clients concurrently at minimal latency already while being able to compensate for both Brazil-tier and Korean-tier internet connection.

I've been working on an authoritative combat system like Chivalry/Mount&Blade and it's already difficult enough when it's one of the only mechanics in the game on a server made for 64 players. I can't imagine having to do this on a massively multiplayer scale in addition to everything else running over the network.

Revisiting Gloria Victis since they just released the new model patch and it's shaping up pretty good.

quote:

The biggest update in the entire history of Gloria Victis has just been released! Not only we have implemented new character models and reworked character creation system – you also receive 7 redesigned settlements, great expansion of the locations upgrading system and Christmas content! The last but not least - as a Christmas gift we gave all of you one point to reset your attributes.

Speaking of Holidays – Merry Christmas, Gloria Victis players! Many times your awesome continuous support gave us energy boost which allowed us to release 34 regular updates since Steam EA release (in just 6 months!), be able to finally establish an office after hard times of remote work, expand the development team and start cooperation with one of the best animators in the industry – only thanks to your priceless support all these achievements could become real. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and see you in battle!

P.S. Special thanks for the internal testers group for awesome help with countless tests of this update – we owe you one!

Work in Progress:

– Our designers are reworking 4 remaining settlements into the new upgrades system
– Programmers are working on character controller and synchronization overhaul
– New animations are being prepared to the final implementation
– Dozens of events for new players will be added on peninsula South of Dunfen
– Inventory and depots system should finally get moved into new system within 2 weeks
– Once work on the male character is done, our artists will start implementation of female character
– In the nearest future we will focus on optimization improvements and bug fixes
– Editor of existing characters will be implemented soon, so you will be able to re-customize your current avatars and change gender once female model is introduced

Animations will probably be in a couple weeks and they look great (I guess they hired the guy who did The Witcher 3's combat animations).
