So I finally picked this up on the last steam sale. I dabble in astronomy so space types games are always a draw for me. I just started playing it in the last few days and it's been pretty fun trying to figure this stuff out.

Exploring has been interesting seeing stuff, but I'm not really clear on how I make money doing it. Trading seems to be pointless without a huge hauler so I've skipped that. I've been doing these courier/data mission and now have a cobra 3 or something that is kind of nice. The only thing I don't like about these missions is some times they send me a message saying "oh gently caress we need the data now I'll give you 80,000 credits extra" and then I check the time and it's like "you have 1 minute to deliver" and there is no loving way you can make it that fast :/

I don't have a hotas setup at the moment and I suspect that is probably the cause of my biggest issues which is combat related. It seems most times when I do a little SRV mission thing I'll end up getting bounties for the sentry done because they are illegal or whatever but then I get a bounty on me for trespassing and the federal no fun police or whatever then blow me up right when I take off again.

I keep seeing the political stuff and I can't make heads or tails of it yet -- does any of this matter in the grand scheme of things?

Thanks for that. Going to skip the silly SRV stuff for now then since it seems to take forever to do and is a pain.

Other questions:

1) How do I "fix" my mail window?" I am continually getting overlapping mails and it's all garbled up. If I delete them all I can still see ghost threads.

2) Is there any way to speed up the mission board? It takes like 15 seconds to open and is slow as gently caress.

Are you running the game on an SSD? Never had the board take more than a few seconds even at peak busy server times. No idea what else could cause it.
It's currently running from my SAN off a raid 10 LUN. Everything loads pretty fast but that mission window just takes forever to come up. Pretty sure it is a server call -- maybe its slow cause I'm in the starting area?

Okay so I went ahead and dropped the cash for a HOTAS setup and jesus this is hard to get used to. Biggest problem right now is trying figure out what button is what. Having the mapping software saying "SLD, MOd3, Rotary 2, H4" as the button/switch and the game saying "JOY 5, JOY 29, JOY 31" isn't helpful. Beyond that... umm... having a problem relearning to fly. I was just using Mouse + Xbox pad before and was getting the hand of it. Now I'm loving noob city. Hoping this is worth it in the long run.

When should I move out from the starter area? I was thinking of just flying out into the void or whereever that aliance with the cheaper mods was but I'm not sure if most system will have spots to do missions etc to make money.

So last night I said "gently caress it" and set a course of like 40-50 jumps to Cubeo system to check out this faction leader down here. It was neat seeing all the different systems on the way and ending up getting half million in pay just by flying through and scanning on the way. The variety of system composition is neat.

Hopefully I'm able to make money easy down here and get some missions that don't just pay 60-100k. Those passenger missions look like they could make me bank after I get rep.

So is the game broken now? I can't turn in missions that I have (says can't connect to the adjudication server)

e: so now I can't even open the mission board. Says cannot connect to the transaction server. Whatever they did with daily maintenance hosed up stuff I guess.

So I've finally gotten the hang of using the HOTAS now and set about doing some exploring and trying to make money. I would pick an area to go to, try to get some missions that would all end up going to the same spot, but this is a huge pain in the dick. You get like 5-10 destinations and it's all horribly inefficient because I can't stick around and build the rep to the good missions that don't pay 43 credits to deliver strategic junk mail a few jumps down. Worse yet if you get stupid poo poo (wing missions or kill 119 ships or whatever) you can't just decline it and get a new list.

So I search on mission recommendations and people are talking about board flipping so I look up what this is. What the gently caress? Why isn't there just a refresh button when you get a ton bullshit missions and have them generate some more. Why can't I just tell the people there "hey I'm going down to the store, do you need me to do anything" rather then having to filter through ones that are 30ly the wrong way. Still feeling this is stupid I do more searching and I find there are system in the game trick missions to only going between two systems based on what's around it. Fast forward a few hours later, I'm now a Duke with 30M in the bank and ready to try making money on the ally rank missions.

What I'm trying to say is, whoever is the korean mmo designer at Frontier needs to get shitcanned. You will never out grind design some poopsocker or cleaver nerd that's just going abuse your design to get past it in a creative way.

Now searching for the neat easy way to make a stack of cash so I can but this cutter thing, put whatever one it and just fly around exploring and having fun.

The game not explaining its mechanics is frustrating, but it's easy to find videos and such explaining things.
This is loving dumb. Full stop. This is like saying "dude setting up wifi/sound in linux is easy, just google it" and sends some poor fucker searching on how to do it and all you find are pages upon pages of stupid broken instructions that are 12 years old and haven't been accurate in 10 years at least.

Here's the great example.

Last night after I finished that silly rep grind thing, I decided to check out the Engineer things. I don't really know what it's about. I see icon in my console and hit it and read it's super great and everyone wants it. So I look at the one it says I have access too. It's in some system far away and that I need to bring the person 1 meta-alloy. So I load up the market at the station and look for some... nothing there. I look around in bit and can't find where I get it. Or what meta-alloys are. I've never seen them. Hell I still don't know if I need to give them cash after I line it up... am I wasting my time? Okay whatever.

So here goes -- I have to get out of the game and search for a website on where I can get meta-alloys because the dumb thing says bring them but doesn't say anything else. I search and find some wiki here: http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Meta-Alloys. Okay so there's the in game description that I could see if I had them and learn they Thargoid poop or whatever. I have to blow up an Organic Structure near an Alien Structure. Okay gently caress where do I find those? Is there something on the map? Do I have to scan like 12394814 planets with a scanner to find one? I can't find anything in game to give me a clue how to get started. There was a coordinates list on some planet listed on this wiki (how was it found originally?) -- is that the place I got to start? Is this stupid wiki even right or outdated?

Okay so looking at the history on this wiki they talk about Maia system let people sell them as it was found near there. Okay so let me fly there and try to buy some. So I fly 25 jumps last night to get down there to check. I finally made it and checked the market. None there. Okay whatever... will start again tonight. So I guess I need to go find this Merope 5 C and find those coordinates and see if there is some Thargoid poop I can chisel away for myself.

I'm 100% all for exploring and trying things for myself, but if you're going to block deep exploration behind a game mechanic at least put something in game to get the thing going rather then nothing. I have no idea if I'm even doing the right thing to find this stuff for the lady or if this was what they expected.

I'm enjoying the game but drat man some of this stuff is needlessly obtuse and having to feel like "should I be reading some poo poo outside the game to make sure I'm not being dumb" is stupid.
