Anybody got any good world-building shows? A lot of shows have interesting settings but never really reach beyond what's going on in front of the main characters's faces at any given point. Whether it's a good old fashioned adventure or just a show that likes to talk about its world a lot, that's the sort of thing I'd like to see. I've watched quite a lot of anime so I might have already watched most of the good examples, but any recommendations are appreciated. I loved Juuni Kokuki/The Twelve Kingdoms for this, where they took the time to go into detail over stuff as minute as how the government allocates land. If anybody has any good "let's just go on an adventure" shows that'd be cool too. Shows that are generally fun would be nice too. Just finished rewatching The Tower of Druaga, that show was the best for being fun. Oh, and to make one last demand, it might be a little simple but anybody know shows with good swordfights? For such a universal protagonist weapon the list of shows with good proper swordfights is awfully low.

GitS is usually one of those things that people usually start with but I still haven't watched it, I should really do that. Gonna watch Champloo after I finally watch Bebop. Been watching anime for two or so years and I still haven't watched a show that's many people's first anime.

The Nausicaa manga is one of the great pieces of world creation in all of science fiction. It's a decent Ghibli movie, but the manga is on a whole different level.

The adaptation of a different book by the same author as with Chaika, Scrapped Princess does some interesting world-building, with another slightly unorthodox interpretation of the generic (fantasy medieval Europe with magic and insane(?) gods and etc) setting. Comedy suggestion: Kuuchuu Buranko a.k.a. Trapeze... It's exactly like Iron Chef, only not.

The conundrum for Nausicaa that I had was that I knew that the manga was better, so I wasn't sure whether to watch the movie first where I wouldn't get the "oh this isn't as good as the manga" feeling, but then I wouldn't be able to go into the manga without knowing anything about it.

I'd say go movie first to avoid the this isn't as good as the manga feeling. Then go into the manga and be very surprised when things go a lot deeper than you expected.

The movie is still very much a Ghibli classic and while the start is very close to the manga it's different in enough little ways that you'll still be a little surprised at how things develop early on.

Sooo, I actually watched Nisemonogatari. I was ready to skip large chunks of it, given its reputation and, uh, ample warnings given in this thread, but I really liked most of Bakemonogatari, so I thought I'd check this out to get to the second season. I... I don't wanna go to jail  What the gently caress was going on with this? Whoever said this season takes everything bad about the series to 11 was right on the mark. Fanservice becomes scene right out of taboo porn, right down to the ultra-flimsy reasons where the most insane behaviour becomes apparently acceptable. Everybody is now from porn dimension, including (and, in fact, almost exclusively) girls under 16. Sexy dames in trouble is okay with me. But here, every once in a while (or for whole episodes), everybody acts like porn characters and it's ~pedophile time~. Not even just the obvious issues with that: it's contrived, stupid and a waste of time. Just great. On the other hand: when I wasn't frantically skipping forward, there were some nice action scenes (there's the nauseating brutality I was looking for! Yesssss), and the basic story was actually pretty cool. Oh, and a GREAT "villain". He didn't even do much, but I loved every second that Kakei was on screen. Just the sheer contrast to the other characters! And a rad theme song, too. I hope this guy gets more appearances in the future, he's a joy to behold. In general, I really like this show's approach to conflict - almost no-one "wins" by sheer strength, even the action is basically still talking that has spilled over into violence. Coupled with this show's weird-rear end mythology, it's just fun. If it weren't for the boring aimlessness of the first couple episodes plus the obvious negative of KIDDIE PORN DIMENSION, WHAT THE gently caress IS WRONG WITH THIS SHOW, it could've been good. Well, can't say I haven't been warned. If this continues, I'm out for the sake of my sanity, but I still have hope. I'm just too trusting and naive, in this dark, dark world of anime.  Gonna have to watch some Fist of the North Star to forget this...

The good news is, you're over the hump. The rest of the ~gataris are tame in comparison. Nise is both the weirdest and weakest in my opinion, but it's got necessary setup for the later stuff, which you should watch.

I'll just keep thinking of Nisemonogatari as the season that gave me Kaiki Deishu and Platinum Disco. I don't think you'll have to worry too much with Nekomonogatari. If you were fine with the cat girl Hanekawa fanservice in Bake, it's all just that.

Can anyone recommend a fun shounen show that's on Crunchyroll? I've seen HunterxHunter and Magi, both of which I liked. I still occasionally watch One Piece despite how much I think the pacing is rubbish. Jojo's fun too if you consider that shounen. I've seen enough of Bleach and Naruto to know that it's not really my thing.

Just stop after the Kyoto arc because there's nothing watching after Kyoto.

When it was airing I felt it didn't really get going until Ban showed up which is four or five episodes in but once it gets into its groove it doesn't stop. And like Devil Tesla said there's Ushio to Tora, which is basically a time-displaced nineties shounen on account of being an adaptation of an early nineties shounen manga.

So, I've finally graduated from a lengthy stay in hospital, mostly spent immobile, to a lengthy stay at home, mostly to be spent immobile. Can even work again somewhat. So, to celebrate my glorious return to somewhat everyday life, I was being a useless piece of poo poo and watched all of Nekomonogatari + some of Katanagatari + three episodes of Monogatari 2nd season. Time well spent. First, right away: I lost interest in Katanagatari after the first episode... and I lost it again after the fourth. The banter between the characters gets better (I particularly enjoyed their lengthy chat over which catchphrase to pick  ), but I'm not very taken with the more emotional parts of the episodes. And after four episodes, I feel like the shtick of this series is subverting expectations in the most underwhelming way possible. I mean, that's nice and all, it's just... sheer disappointment, all the time. It felt less clever and more lazy. ("My thousand sword technique is unbeatable! Look at how I prepared the battlefield! ...or run away while I monologue, I guess") I suppose it's obvious by now that you don't really watch this show for the incredible action, but the rest doesn't interest me enough to make up for it. Meh.As for Nekomonogatari: well, it's no Nise! I'd say "return to form", if I wasn't so sure the creators knew perfectly well what the hell they were doing with Nisemonogatari. Very cool stuff. Some more appearances for noted cool guy Oshino, some stupid over-the-top violence, the most  plan to sacrifice your own life, and the cat apparition itself is fun as well. And what I've seen of the 2nd season so far is really, really good - Senjogahara being a dork who violently owns everyone forever in particular.I'll forgive you, Monogatari. I forgot to cancel my Crunchyroll trial so I'd appreciate a couple more recommendations. Has there been anything like Code Geass or Death Note (smart MC, lots of plans, etc) released in the last couple of years? I also want to watch (or read) things that make me cry of happiness/heartwarming like the last episode of My Love Story!! or the episode where Sawako reconciles with Yano and Yoshida (volume 2 of the manga). Thanks!

There's an unfortunate gap between the second and third seasons where they just skipped over material, but what's there is great fun. Barakmon is another really, really great heartwarming CR rec though sadly I think there are weird licensing restrictions with it for some reason so it might not be available in your region.
