A normal first playthrough will take you from six to eight hours, depending on various factors. Ones after that will be quicker mostly because you'll know where to go and won't be quite so busy reading flavor text.

Foolish child of man...
After reading all this,
do you still not understand?

To the north from Napstablook, a big room with a few Froggits.

Come eat food made by spiders, for spiders, of spiders!

Tempting, but I want to get a little more money first.

(My friend never listens to me.)
(Whenever I talk, they skip through my words by pressing [X].)

Hee hee.

(But what does "F4" stand for? "Four frogs"?)
(I have only seen a maximum of three frogs in this room...)
(This is troubling, to say the least.)
Ribbit.

New enemy discovered!

Nice and straightforward. First turn, as always, goes to Check.

I'm getting flashbacks to Monsters, Inc from this guy.

Loox's main attack is a bit tricky just because of how erratic the movement of the bullets is.

Just to see what happens, I'm going to Pick on it.

Same attack, but I'm pretty sure the bullet density is higher.

Next: Don't pick on.

Loox's other attack is much weaker. He seems happy now, though.

Okay, okay, let's take a look at that bake sale.

Back to where I fought Napstablook, and to the right!

Well, what's in the big web?

Dang, whatever this web sells, I can't afford it.

(It's Spider Cider. Made using whole spiders, not just the juice.)

That's more in my price range!

What kind of donut are we talking about here?

This sounds revolting, but I'll take it. Back up north!

Hello?
I just realized that it has been a while since I have cleaned up.
I was not expecting to have company so soon.
There are probably a lot of things lying about here and there.
You can pick them up, but do not carry more than you need.
Someday you might see something you really like.
You will want to leave room in your pockets for that.

There are a lot of enemy types in here.

Four options! First, Check.

This mean vegetable is gonna be slightly harder to placate than most of the enemies I've met so far.

Like most things you see in random encounters, Vegetoid has two attacks. Neither of them are super menacing.

I'll ask it about Dinner!

New game mechanic! White bullets damage you, but green bullets are perfectly harmless - in fact, touching one heals you a tiny bit.

Unfortunately, I missed the green vegetabullet, so Vegetoid is still mad.

Attempt #2 gives me Vegetoid's second attack - and I take damage for the first time since Flowey! 3 damage, but I heal 1 by eating the green one.

More importantly, Vegetoid is happy that I ate my greens.

Let's hurry up and check out the next room.

I see a pit.

Six pits, actually. Which one will lead to the switch?

I start by trying out the one to the south.

Oh, hey.

go on without me...
wait, ghosts can fly, can't they...
oh well...

Napstablook disappears again.

I return to the surface and check out the northwest pit.

Is that something interesting?

I spend the next 25 seconds convincing a Vegetoid that I know how to eat healthy.

That having been a waste of time, I go ahead and hit the one with the switch in it. No further shenanigans get in my way.

Onwards!

Some kinda weird colorful things are on the ground.

How cryptic.

For now, I ignore the colorful things, and head south to the next room.

This looks kind of familiar.

I can see a red switch to the south, and a green switch to the east...

I encountered some sort of bug creature! It's called Migosp.

First order of business: Placate the Vegetoid, which I already know how to do.

Migosp complicates Vegetoid's attack by swarming bugs around the sides of the field. Still, I got the green one.

Spare ejects the Vegetoid, and then... what?

Uh

OK.

Back to the puzzle!

The trick to this puzzle is that the second room is just the first, rotated 90 degrees. So, the blue switch is hidden behind this pillar.

The third room is the same, rotated again. Also, much easier, since it's right there.

The fourth room is the trickiest, since two of the switches are hidden behind pillars, so it's not obvious which one is green.

But if you recall the layout of the previous room, the green switch is the one closest to the corner.

Moving on past that puzzle, I come to a fork in the road. First, I'll go right.

(I saw Toriel come out of here just a little while ago.)
(She was carrying some groceries.)
(I didn't ask what they were for...)
(We're all too intimidated to talk to her.)
Ribbit.

To the north is a dead end, aside from finding a new weapon.

I head back to go north from the last branch.

BGM: Fallen Down

Busted.

Not a scratch... impressive! But still...
I should not have left you alone for so long.
It was irresponsible to try to surprise you like this.
Er...
Well, I suppose I cannot hide it any longer.
Come, small one!

I save my game.

I won't go that far yet, but I do really enjoy having new encounters with different enemies. I wouldn't mind a higher rate at all if it also came with a few more enemy types to make sure you don't see the same one too many times in a row. It's like taking the concept of an Earthbound final boss story battle and extending it to every single encounter, it's great.

Even though I already bought the game, I went and downloaded the demo to check out that thing with the instruction manual. That was a nice touch, but what impressed me a LOT more was replaying the demo a couple times to quickly test different beginnings before I carried on with the main game.

BGM: Home

Surprise!
It is a butterscotch-cinnamon pie.
I thought we might celebrate your arrival.
I want you to have a nice time living here.
So I will hold off on snail pie for tonight.
Here, I have another surprise for you.

A room of your own. I hope you like it!

Is something burning...? Um, make yourself at home!

So, this is my room.

BGM: Home (Music Box)

Let's see what's in my new home.

It has everything a kid could want, but... hmm.

It's been a long day, so I'll hop in bed for a quick nap.

Someone left something for me while I was sleeping.

I wonder what else is around in this house.

BGM: Home

This pie is the strongest healing item in the entire game.

There's another room down the hall to the right.

You read the passage...
"Why did the skeleton want a friend?
Because she was feeling BONELY..."
The rest of the page is filled with jokes of a similar caliber.

I just realized I forgot to do a couple of the phone conversations.

Time to call Toriel from two rooms away!

Oh, heh... heh... Ha ha ha!
How adorable... I could pinch your cheek!
You can certainly find better than an old woman like me.

"Typha - A group of wetland flowering plants with brown, oblong seedpods.
More commonly known as "water sausages."

It's Toriel's sock drawer.

The hallway continues.

Nobody lives in this room.

One last phone call before we check out the other side of the house.

Huh? Did you just call me... "Mom"?
Well... I suppose...
Would that make you happy?
To call me... "Mother"?
Well then, call me whatever you like!

About face, let's see what's to the left.

This house feels extraordinarily lived-in.

There she is.

Trapped behind the barrier and fearful of further human attacks, we retreated.
Far, far into the earth we walked, until we reached the cavern's end.
This was our new home, which we named...
"Home."
As great as our king is, he is pretty lousy at names.

This is a very safe place to live.

To the north is a very cozy kitchen.. Looking around...

Okay, I think I've poked around enough.

Um, I want you to know how glad I am to have someone here.
There are so many old books I want to share.
I want to show you my favorite bug-hunting spot.
I've also prepared a curriculum for your education.
This may come as a surprise to you...
But I have always wanted to be a teacher.
...actually, perhaps that isn't very surprising.
STILL.
I am glad to have you living here.
Oh, did you want something?

What? This... IS your home now.
Um... would you like to hear about this book I am reading?
It is called "72 Uses for Snails".

Um... How about an exciting snail fact?
Did you know that snails...
Make terrible shoelaces?

...I have to do something. Stay here.

Something is wrong here.

I'm going to find out what.

BGM: Silence

The stairs lead to a very long tunnel.

Ahead of us lies the end of the Ruins.
A one-way exit to the rest of the underground.
I am going to destroy it.
No one will ever be able to leave again.
Now be a good child and go upstairs.

I keep following Toriel.

I have seen it again and again.
They come.
They leave.
They die.
You naive child... If you leave the Ruins...

I am only protecting you, do you understand?
...go to your room.

Still, I continue.

This is your final warning.

...

Hmph.
You are just like the others.
There is only one solution to this.
Prove yourself...

:siren:Video: Toriel Fight:siren:

:siren:BGM: Heartache:siren:

This battle won't be like the quaint little monsters in the ruins.

Toriel's magic attacks are beyond anything I've seen so far.

Under the ACT menu, we have Check and Talk. Maybe there's still a way to Talk out our problems.

But I don't know what to say.

Toriel waves her hands and summons walls of fire. Dangerous, but not one of her most painful attacks.

I'll try to talk again.

I wasn't prepared for this.

(Something went a little weird with the gif speed in this fight. I'm not sure why.)

This is Toriel's third magic attack, and the most dangerous by far. Dodging all of it takes equal parts skill, luck and reflexes.

I'll try one more time.

I can't make her listen.

Do I have to fight?

I won't. I'm not going to hurt someone who was so kind to me.

No response. Also, this is a more representative job of dodging those fireballs.

Once again, I choose Mercy.

I feel like that one was a little different.

Mercy.

Is she hesitating?

I'm taking a pretty serious beating, so it's time for a lunch break.

A less common attack - only one hand, but the flame orbs home in on my soul slightly.

Mercy.

More pain. More Mercy.

Mercy.

No.

I don't know.

I won't.

While I'm being stubborn, I'm also getting slowly blown apart by magic.

That was my last healing item.

Back to Mercy.

...

...

...

Are we going in a circle?

Was I wasting all this time?

...What?

BGM: Silence

I keep choosing Mercy, but... now she isn't attacking, either.

I promise I will take good care of you here.
I know we do not have much, but...
We can have a good life here.

Please, go upstairs.
...
Ha ha...

...
No, I understand.
You would just be unhappy trapped down here.
The Ruins are very small once you get used to them.
It would not be right for you to grow up in a place like this.
My expectations... My loneliness... My fear...
For you, my child... I will put them aside.

BGM: Fallen Down

I will not stop you.
However, when you leave...
Please do not come back.
I hope you understand.

Goodbye, my child.

Toriel leaves without another word.

I open the door.

BGM: Silence

The corridor goes on and on.

And eventually, I come to a new room.

Oh.

It's you.

You think you're really smart, don't you?
In this world, it's kill or be killed.
So you were able to play by your own rules.

Hee hee hee...
I bet you feel really great.
You didn't kill anybody this time.
But what will you do if you meet a relentless killer?
You'll die and you'll die and you'll die.
Until you tire of trying.
What will you do then?
Will you kill out of frustration?
Or will you give up entirely on this world...
...and let ME inherit the power to control it?
I am the prince of this world's future.
Don't worry, my little monarch, my plan isn't regicide.
This is SO much more interesting.

With an inhuman laugh, Flowey withdraws.

For now.

The world of monsters awaits.

Some notes regarding Toriel. They may be considered spoilers, but it's stuff my route is unlikely to touch on.
  • I love how this scene is built up. As demonstrated by the thread, nearly everyone assumes Toriel is going to turn out to be evil. Not only does she not turn out to be evil, but you still have to fight her.
  • I didn't show it off here, but if you drop to 2 or less HP, then Toriel starts missing you on purpose. It's actually very hard to die fighting Toriel.
  • A bunch of spoilers removed
  • You know what? I can just pick up a copy of the demo and show this off more directly. Tomorrow's update will show off some of the things I missed on the first run through this area, plus a little more.

I tried something like that too. I went through the defensive phase at first of wondering what if she's evil... (why is she looking for fallen people every day? Does she need a human sacrifice or something?) But the house with all its little details made me start to think differently. I felt bad even asking about how to get home, waking up to that slice of pie felt like she was so lonely and trying so hard. By the time she went to destroy the exit, seeing her emotion over the previous humans dying made me want to see if I could stay. I went back upstairs to my room to sleep and be good.

But of course, our character is really more determined to move on. I spared her and if I wanted to stay before, that was nothing compared to how I felt when she broke down and gave me that goodbye hug. I was crying like crazy, I could just picture her crying all night regretting her decision and thinking how could she be so weak to not put her foot down, she was just sending me off to die. :smith:

I too failed to spare her. In an attempt (perhaps futile) to repent of my sins, I have not killed any monster since then. I still feel bad (especially since I was so suspicious of her). Poor Toriel, she really just wanted me to be safe.

It's even better since all the children's mementos (especially the mismatched shoes) might start to make you suspicious of this incredibly nice and sweet monster-lady, but nope, turns out they're from all the other kids who wandered off to their deaths and she can't bear to put away their things because that'd be like burying them herself.
