Go is where poo poo gets weird and then there's only 2 or 3 books left.

The more 70s robot manga you read, the more you realize how ahead of the curve Ishikawa was. The first two Getter series follow Mazinger Z's monster-of-the-week schtick, but they're just... ferocious enough to make Nagai's work seem tame. All the characters are bold, dramatic archetypes, the pace never lets up, the tone veers wildly from horror to awe to comedy. Mazinger Z fades into something lukewarm and repetitive as it goes on; Getter shifts into higher, more bizarre gears whenever things start to get samey.

And then you have Go -- and later, Shin -- which is where Ishikawa came into his own as a draftsman and a storyteller. Go is a goddamn feat in the (admittedly limited) field of mecha manga, alongside YAS's Origin Gundam. There's really nothing else like it.

Ishikawa was a very prolific mangaka, but very little of his work was ever translated into English. I hope that changes in the coming years.

The guys that translated the Getter manga have the first few chapters of Kyomu Senki and Majuu Sensen up. It's happening. Slowly.

Especially anyone who would adapt a Go Nagai work.

I just watched Getter Robo Armageddon. Two words: gently caress yeah.

Tell me of a mecha show that's as :getin: as that (sans Gurren Lagann of course).

Have you seen New Getter Robo? Because you should see New Getter Robo. And read the manga.

Gaogaigar gets there eventually but it takes quite a while to get around to it.

Huh, there's a new Mazinger manga? What's it about? Is it about Dr. Hell, here looking like a regular person and not like someone who is blatantly the villain of the show?

There's 2 of them, actually. The one pictured is a retelling of the original story changed up a bit and the other is one Shwartzwald's talking about. Interval Peace is written by the screenwriter for the new Mazinger Z movie due out eventually.

I remember being 15 or so when fox tried airing a 4kids version of it and loved it despite all the edits. There was a ps1 game I played around then that had a fantasy mech aspect to it also (vanguard bandits?). Those were good mech years.

Vanguard Bandits owned, even if it is the Working Designsest translation they ever did.

Did they do that in multiple games or are we the only two people on the planet that played Cosmic Fantasy 2

They did it in Vanguard Bandits.

In all seriousness it's decent little SRPG with branching paths and is worth a play or 6. The last branch is a complete spoof of the rest of the game in the original Japanese so just imagine what it's like after Vireland got a hold of it.

All the OVAs are good but New is definitely the best place to start.

Is Neo Getter Robo different from Getter Robo Go (the mechs I mean)? Or is it like the Shin Getter Robo to OG Getter Robo

The mech in New Getter Robo is something of a mix of OG Getter, Getter G and Shin Getter, designwise. The whole thing's kinda like Shin Mazinger vs 70s Mazinger Z.

Ah yeah that one's more G with something resembling Go's paint job.

No kids in Getter. Gaogaigar has kids in the supporting cast but they don't really fight for the most part.
