It's only a few seconds long but it's a really haunting and memorable scene.

I really love this film, it keeps you on your toes the entire time. I've never seen any film quite capture the unpredictability of Flying Phantom Ship.

Senya Ichiya Monogatari

I'm going to watch it this Sunday at 11PM EST, again. As usual, feel free to watch it whenever!

We're going to finish up the simulwatch with a film from the end of the sixties. As mentioned before, Osamu Tezuka really wanted to push anime into the adult demographic, so he conceived of AnimeRama, a series of three adult oriented anime films. Senya Ichiya Monogatari is probably the weakest of the three, but it's still really interesting to watch! It's fairly clear from the opening scene that it's something special. If you've ever wondered what those sexy snake drawings from that one article people like to link are, well, you're going to find out. Interestingly, the film was licensed and dubbed into English as one of the first attempts at bringing an X-rated cartoon to the states, but it was sadly ahead of its time, and nobody was really ready for it. It predates Fritz the Cat by three years.

Senya Ichiya Monogatari is the story of Aladdin, and his wild adventures.

I'm going to talk about some anime I wish I could have shared. GeGeGe no Kitaro is the quintessential yokai anime about a ghost boy and his eye dad, and their adventures. Sasuke is one of the original ninja anime, written by an angry socialist. It should receive subs soon, I know someone who has it on their pipeline, although unfortunately they suffered a harddrive failure that robbed them of the raws. I wish I could have shown Skyer 5; it looks insanely cool, but the only subs I could find are really, really bad. I also would have looked in on some Tatsunoko anime like Speed Racer or Kurenai Sanshiro, which is about the son of a judo master who witnesses his father being killed, and embarks on a journey to find his killer.

Anyway, thanks to everyone who watched the anime and posted! I'm happy to share some of my favorite anime, and I hope you expanded your tastes a bit.

No, she just disappears into the mystery room, never to be seen again.

Why didn't we watch Kitaro? The first eleven episodes are subbed and available at the usual places.

Fun Shoe
Man, Dororo was amazing. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it when it comes to the show's representation of disabled people. I know he gets more able-bodied later, but holy poo poo, the scene where he sees that his leg is back is amazingly well done. This was made in the 60's of all things.
