I really want a pet bird but I know I'm not responsible enough to care for one or wealthy enough to buy one, and this thread is not helping. :smith:

Austin has been developing wild populations of what I now suspect are monk parakeets aka Quaker parrots for the last few years at least, and they seem to be spreading. Has anybody else in the area seen them? They're super pretty. :3:

There's also a small population of them in the Capital Plaza shopping center near I-35, a whole bunch near the Walgreen's on the corner of Guadalupe and 45th, a growing number on the east border of the UT campus, and, just recently, some in the Hancock Center parking lot (although the last group may be competing with grackles for territory).

Are they all Quaker parrots, or are a few of them other parrots that I didn't get close enough looks at? They seem to build nests like Quakers.

Reach for the moon!

Seals are not birds but I feel like this video is worth posting because look at these lazy fuckers, they're so adorable:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMV7H5N5F-s

Seals are insane murderfuckers in water and on ice but on land they have nothing that wants to eat them so they're just fat lazy blobs. As a bonus, there are birds in this video, but they are penguins.

I was leaving the HEB over on Riverside probably 5 or 6 years ago when I noticed that the grass was moving on an otherwise windless day. I took a closer look and the entire patch was covered in these little dudes. I've lived here my entire life and that was the first time I'd seen (or at least noticed) them, but apparently they've been around since the 70s when a few caged ones escaped. The climate is right for them and there really aren't any predators so their population has grown quite large and are apparently now on the official list of accepted Texas bird species.

I'm a little worried that a crow is going to see that and figure out a way to maim that cat horribly by getting it to stick its arm out there

if anything deserves to maim a cat its a bird, given that cats are currently waging a genocide against all birds in the world

It lets them find and strike at prey hidden in the marsh plants without scaring it off by walking around. They also stretch their striped necks upward to blend into stands of reeds when they feel threatened.
